Fall 2015 Applicants

Recommended Posts

Thanks for this - it makes a lot of sense. I wrote an email last week, telling a POI at a school i already applied to that i found a collection that i might work with, and it is very essential for my project. I wrote them in the " i just want to inform you" tone.

...i didnt ask a question, or imply that i needed to hear back from them. Do you think this is harmful in any way? Pushy?

No, I think that's a relevant addition to your application that shows you're engaged and not just impatient or needy. So I wouldn't worry about it.

I think Dan's advice above is good, especially with regards to the fact that students should see themselves as choosing a program as much as a program chooses them. But I still think that even very level-headed potential advisors might be annoyed by someone pestering them for news about their application--except, as someone already pointed out, in cases where a student has a looming decision deadline.

Congrats on UOregon and the UMinn interview.

How was the interview intimidating?

12 faculty around a table asking me about my research interests (also my cat decided to jump on my desk and make an appearance)-- I had practiced many times but during the interview I really lost it. I felt like I babbled a bit without getting to the point. It was just a lot of pressure... I'm a younger PhD applicant (21) and really felt the need to prove myself!

If they ask you "do you plan to visit and meet some other people in the program?" then your answer should be "yes, I do!" They're not asking because they think it's a bad idea, they're asking because they think you should do that.

Personally I would only visit after you get offers because that's when you're actually deciding, so I would say - "once the decisions are made, I will be visiting all of the schools to talk with students, have a look at camputs and such to help me make my decision."

Unless someone wants to claim the NYU acceptance, I'm calling a fake -- the department faculty meeting (where the committee usually presents the final short list and the faculty votes together) isn't until 2/3 (the schedule is up online) and classes don't start until tomorrow.

Yeah, I'm confused by the NYU acceptance too. I'm one of NYU interviewees (huzzah!), and the email from them said "I am pleased to tell you that you are under serious consideration for admission to the NYU Anthropology Department, although we are still working with a long list and have not made any decisions yet."

But, perhaps, someone just completed their interview and something was said verbally that led them to conclude they have been accepted, though it would be informal at this stage...

Was it a mass email or a personal one from a POI?

Could be fake - those definitely happen here. Could also be the one that they knew they wanted - that happens also - a lot of departments make an offer to someone that is a bright shining star so they can try to outcompete other schools. Or it could be a typo for an MA, or who knows. Whatever it is, it doesn't impact anyone else's chances, so don't worry. :)

It was a personal email from one of the people I mentioned in my SOP, though not one of the two I highlighted as having the most direct alignment in research interests. Not sure what that means - if she's fulfilling a role on the committee, if the other two aren't interested or available (one is on sabbatical, I do know that), if they think I'd be better suited to working with her, etc...

Who was bonkers enough to call Brown? It's not even February! That post on the results board is going to haunt me for days. Guys, I don't think I can take the stress! My Academia.edu hits are not giving me good news either -- random hits from Quebec, Florida...UGH!

Also, as far as I know, policy at NYU does not require everyone on the short list to be interviewed. Most are, but not all.

I likewise am refreshing my academia page every two minutes. A couple hits in the UK, which bodes well for my app to Oxford, but otherwise it's full of red herring hits in Istanbul, Jakarta, Moscow, Islamabad, and Lagos.

If I may interject an anecdote from my academia.edu...

I have a paper up there about the Maya ballgame that features the phrase "masked man" in the title (Oh no! My anonymity!) and one day I got a notification that someone had found it. Do they still give you the keywords that people use to find your paper? Well if they don't, they used to, and this notification told me that "Someone from the USA found your paper with they keywords 'masked man pounds balls'!"

....but what always gets me the most about that story is that not only did someone pull up my paper in a search for "masked man pounds balls", they actually CLICKED on it!! Like, well I was gonnna go look at some porn...but the Maya though...

Brown could be a fake. Maybe they are checking out your Academia page using TOR.

I actually do this all the time, use TOR to look at scholars web pages and Academia.edu... The stats on my own are SO revealing that I started covering my own tracks!
