Congrats Chiki!  I was really really hoping to get one of these invites.. but it seems like they all went out at once :(

This has been a rough week :(

I don't think I can go though. They want me to arrive late Wednesday and leave Saturday? Seriously? I can't miss all my classes.

You can go in my place Laniel.

Yeah I decided to take a year off between my MA and starting a PhD and devote myself to research, so I forget that most people are doing these applications while still in classes.  That's gotta be really intense!

In case some of you is interested, a friend of mine just got an interview invite form Harvard

 Me too!!

Congratulations!!! The open house is always a lot of fun (even from an undergrad perspective)... and the department is, of course, amazing, so congrats on that  :D

Congrats to both of you! If you want any help preparing for your interviews with a little inside knowledge from a current Wolverine wug, let me know! ;)

Perhaps tempranillo got notified a bit early because international status = more time/effort to arrange travel? Also, super-special grant nomination probably warrants notification! (Congrats, btw!)

I'm doing everything I can to stay positive, guys. It's not too late for us  :P

Thank you!!! I am pretty far, so that's probably why they let me know so early - feeling quite overwhelmed actually... I'm sure you guys will hear soon!

The result page suddenly have a lot of Georgetown admitted.....

My heart is beating like.... I even had a dream about email and Georgetown last night, totally being ghosted with these results.

I'm wondering about the concentration of the program though. The grad admissions told me the size is extremely small, maybe less than 5.

I am also waiting on Georgetown! Hope they will let use know soon whether it is an acceptance or rejection.

I might ask you for tips eventually :P

By the way, the invitation was from one of my POIs. I just got another email from another professor expressing how he's excited that I will be visiting. It made me super happy  ^_^

Everyone in the department is really, really lovely... feel free to ask me questions as well (especially if they pertain to the p-side of things, socio, or historical linguistics... I've actually taken most of the graduate courses in those areas, and know all of the professors and grad students who specialize in them very well!)

Congrats, wuglife.

Does anyone care to guess how likely an applicant is to be admitted after going (from halfway across the globe in my case) to one of these open houses? I didn't apply to Maryland, but I did get a couple invitations, and at one of these schools I haven't been admitted yet. An earlier poster mentioned that at UCSD the open house is mostly to make sure that the applicant isn't insane before admitting them. Is this the general modus operandi, or do departments differ on what the purpose of their open house is?

Just got invited to Maryland, omg I don't have time for all these campus visits D: time to try to arrange an alternate weekend...

Yeah another program told me I'm invited to the open house but isn't sending out official invites for a few days (long story, involving deadlines for an additional certificate program...) and just said it would be at the "end of February." I'm worried it will conflict with Maryland, which means I might have to pick one to reschedule. Should I accept UMD, since they gave the official dates first? Would I be overstepping my bounds to ask the other school for more specific dates, explaining that I need to see if there's a conflict? It would make more sense for me to reschedule UMD, since I'm so close to them, but I don't want to wait around for the other offer before replying to the UMD people. The UMD open house also sounds like a lot of fun!

(Sorry, my brain is exploding a little with all this good news!)

Yeah the last weekend of Feb is apparently really popular, I'm already doing 2 in that weekend! I don't know what I would do in that situation though... You could ask the other school when their weekend is?? I would try to get back to Maryland relatively soon though. I'm going to try to do an alternate time but if nothing works out I might end up just trying to Skype with some other people...

Overanalysis time! There are 29 current grad students in the department so that's like 5-6 students per cohort. They probably want to admit something like 10 or 11 to account for those who don't eventually enroll. If they're inviting 15 then that would suggest they'd admit like 2/3 of the people from open house. This is all insane speculation though, who knows what actually happens :P

If there is already an on-site interview, normally they won't give extra offers but will put people on a waiting list instead. At least that's what happened to the two open house with interviews I went to. And in both cases, the admission rates after the open houses were something like 1 in 3.
