Me too!!! Holy crap, I knew it was a possibility but still... this is totally surreal!!!

btw, does anyone have any idea about the UIUC(Urbana Champaign of IL) Ling department?

Checked the history but it seems that they did not send out interviews/open house invitations.

UIUC told me last week that their open house weekend is in the middle of March, so still plenty of time to hear back from them!

Wow guys!! That's great!!! Congrats! :D

Hiya! I visited there earlier this month (not on an official invite; I was just in the area) and they told me to expect to hear from them early/mid-Feb.

Thanks!

Middle of March. That is really late

Yay congrats!! Are you going to the open house?

Oh, definitely!  It's one of my top choices, so I feel like it would be a huge mistake not to go... luckily USC's open house is the weekend before, so I'll be able to have a little bit of a California vacation  :D

I don't think it's really that late, since they're apparently planning on sending out admissions notifications until the beginning of February... gives people time to make travel plans!

Congrats to those that got into Berkeley!! So exciting!

Looks like acceptance and rejection emails went out the same day in the past, so now I'm just waiting...

That gives you a whole month after the open house to make decisions about where you're going, though.

Hm, well I didn't get accepted to Berkeley but I didn't get rejected either, application status is also still just "submitted". Does that mean I might be waitlisted or in decision-limbo, or maybe that they haven't bothered to send a rejection email yet?

I'm in the same boat.  I think that those who got accepted were just informed through email.  isylia mentioned before that even the online portal still says "submitted" even after the acceptance email.

I hate to be a downer, but I think we are just waiting to get our form rejection email :(

Does anyone know what will happen if one of the referees still hasn't submitted his reference a week after the official deadline? I submitted the application like almost a month before the official deadline (which was last week). I did contact my supervisor about it and he said he would do it last week but he didn't. So I contacted him again this Monday asking him if he could do that within this week and he said ok, but so far he still hasn't submitted it. I don't wanna send him another email AGAIN this week but I'm kinda worried if the admission committee has already started screening the applications.

Do you think I should ask the graduate officer about this?

Posted

Yes I think it would be a good idea to inform the graduate office.

I had the same problem with CUNY (one of my referee totally forgot about it even after I sent him a reminder the week before).

I wrote the graduate secretary about it and they told me I still had a few days.

That's kind of demoralizing but you're probably right. Oh well, can't win everything, at least Yale likes us for some reason.

Something like that happened to me a few years ago when I was applying for my MA. Well, I'm sure it's not uncommon, unfortunately. I was freaking out, naturally, so I wrote an email to another professor I knew, explaining the situation and asking if it'd be possible for her to write me a very last-minute recommendation (I also described my academic goals and interests and all). I didn't know her super well because I only took a class with her, but I sat up front and did really well so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. Anyway, she helped me out and submitted the letters within a few days and I'm forever grateful to her.

Basically, I suggest asking someone else if they can help you out so at least your applications will be complete.

Well, just got the rejection letter from Berkeley. :(   At least they were kind enough to send individually addressed emails.

Congrats, again, to all who got in.  I'm a little jealous, but mostly happy for you :)  Apparently there were less than 10 people who got in.. so way to go you!

Finding another one to write for me is kind of a problem since he is the only professor of my MA program that actually replied to my email. If I ask another prof of my undergraduate degree, I feel like giving an impression to the admission committee that there must be sth wrong with my MA.

He has been kind enough to write for me for the other applications but I guess this one caught him at his busiest time. I just hope he will finish it soon :(

Now I'm scared knowing that it's coming. They're probably going down the alphabet.

I just got two emails in the past ten minutes, but they were some other random stuff. Scared me both times. :P

Thanks. I did what you suggested and really hope they haven't started the process.

Congratulations to everyone who was admitted to Berkeley!! Obviously don't have to tell you how awesome that is haha. Question: did you apply with an MA or a BA? I'm trying to get a feel for if admissions are leaning more towards students with MAs than BAs this year. It seems like it was that way at UCSB for sure.

I'm applying with a BA- I graduated last May, and am currently spending my gap year working in Spain.

I had A LOT of research experience as an undergrad, though, and am still working remotely for one of my former advisors as an RA. That's part of why I decided to take a year off- I knew that I'd look much better on paper with the extra year of experiences, and I wanted to use my completed undergrad thesis as my writing sample.

Thanks for the information! It seems to me that schools are really starting to prefer if we take either a year off and work on research or attend an MA program. Or it's beginning to matter for differentiating between everyone at least (happened to me on the shortlist).

Just to provide a different experience, I'm currently an undergrad and will come in with a BA/BS (double major).

I'm just a philosophy major and I'm doing ok.

I was admitted to Berkeley today. So, to add another perspective: I am coming in with an MA in Spanish linguistics and a one year research Master's in phonetics.
