Homes2341 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 @AMetAllo I believe 140 are accepted for over 800 applicants, I believe that's what someone else indicated That is for the 2 year, not advance standing. horizonmind 1
swrk Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 (edited) I might have messed up my info on the schools. P.S. Got my rejection letter from Laurier in the mail Wed or Thurs. Edited April 11, 2015 by swrk
smpalesh Posted April 11, 2015 Author Posted April 11, 2015 jenste - I get my information from experience. If you drop out mid-semester they want the entire semesters money back right then. I had to stop a semester 7 weeks in because of health reasons and I had to pay them back all the money. It is one thing to finish one and do another. It is another to drop a semester. They aren't going to fund two programs at the same time.
smpalesh Posted April 11, 2015 Author Posted April 11, 2015 AMetallo - 90 people are accepted to the Advanced Standing at UofT and approximately 300 people apply. It is almost 1 in 3 odds which is awesome. MSW-Waiting4It 1

Leah_N Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 I've only received an email and once I accepted the decision they sent me my LORIS information entailing an email and it appears as though a lot if not of all the information and correspondence needed will be on there Thanks for the reply. I decided to accept the offer! I logged into Loris and saw what you are talking about.

They aren't going to fund two programs at the same time. That's good info to know. It makes sense in a way because if money is given for one semester it should be used for its intended purpose for the intended period of time. It sucks though that health problems were not a valid reason in your case for them to make an exception to the rule. So anyone wanting to drop out of a program should definitely complete the entire semester and not drop out mid-way. Even so, it is my understanding that it would still be possible to attend a different program in the fall. Year ago, I was in photography and only completed the first year. I decided to switch schools the following year and studied in an entirely different field and I was still able to get OSAP. I think that dropping out mid-way in the semester might have been the reason why you had to pay the loan back so quickly. In any case, anyone considering this option would be wise to contact OSAP first before withdrawing and accepting a different offer somewhere else just to be on the safe side. forbuss Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 Congrats to everyone accepted and don't be too down on yourselves if you were not. I am not applying for MSW this year, rather BSW as I am only in my second year of studies at Dalhousie. Did anyone apply/attend to Dal's BSW program? Honestly waiting to hear is killing me. I feel so silly for not applying to more programs, but I really just did not want to move since I have just moved from Toronto (Where I was doing my BSW at York) to Dal where I had to major in Gender & Womens studies because I did not have enough credits to apply. Any information would be appreciated!

Any information would be appreciated! Hey! I also applied to the two year BSW at Dal. They say we'll find out by May 15th at the latest... which is pretty late! I applied after first year and was rejected but then found out that no one really gets in after first year, but second years definitely do! Also my partner is in the program so just send me a message and I can put you in contact! Best!
forbuss Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 Wooho! Someone to wait with. Would you be willing to share the details of your application, and your partners?
mijj_wa Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 I officially declined my offer to Laurier today, good luck to those on the wait list!
Robulous Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 I officially declined my offer to Laurier today, good luck to those on the wait list! yay! Carleton!
purplegrey Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 (edited) I officially declined my offer to Laurier today, good luck to those on the wait list! Hi mijj_wa, I was really set on Carleton originally, and since I was waitlisted at Carleton but accepted to Laurier, I will be attending Laurier. I'm curious to know why you chose Carleton over Laurier. I haven't been able to find a lot of information to compare the two besides the fact that Laurier has 3 placements, in comparison with Carleton who has two. Are there any specific reasons why you chose Carleton over Laurier? Personally, it was more for the location that I wanted Carleton. I'm just curious Edited April 13, 2015 by purplegrey
socialwork2016 Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Hi everyone! This is my first time posting, but I have been reading the board for the past few months as I waited for responses to applications. There hasn't been much posted in regards to Advanced Standing programs for a while so I was just wondering if anyone has heard of any movement in the Waiting Lists for U of T or Ryerson. I'm on both and am so anxious about whether I will make it off or not. Thanks! And congrats to everyone on their acceptances
MostlyM Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Waitlisted. First time applicant, still completing my undergrad. Better than a rejection. Let's hope the list MOVES!
Bettyg Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 I got my letter today I was actually wait listed at u of t! So at least I feel like I'm on the right track msw22 1
Effem Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 (edited) Hi guys, newbie here, I was exploring these forums over the past couple of days and they have been really helpful, espeically because I have been feeling quite down lately after getting waitlisted for the 2-year MSW program at U of T. I didn't know how steep the competition was (over 800 applicants!) and I had some false hope that I would get in. I'm still hopeful though, but I don't know if it was because I didn't have enough experience or not.... my stats: Bachelor of arts in SOC (3.92 gpa in last term of studies), won some scholarships as well. I am a Board Member of an immigrant women's organization (as of October 2014) volunteer experience: peer leader for a Women's health program (9 months) (collab with women's college hospital), Community researcher for Pathways to Education in Regent Park, and Kurdish house. Both of those were only 4 months though. Do you guys think this is competitve enough? I'm staring to doubt my qualifications....I also applied to York as well but competition for that is even steeper given that they only accept around 40 applicants. Edited April 13, 2015 by Effem

Your marks definitely seem high enough. You need lots more experience. If you dedicate the next year to getting more experience (I recommend CAS) then I think you have a great shot next year.

I do think that you are a competitive applicant. You have a nice GPA, and you also have some interesting volunteer and research experience. Having an A in the research course that you selected would also be helpful. Other factors that you might consider are how well-written your application was (I think that this is where I might have lost out) and the strength of your references. Other than that, I think that it's an accomplishment just to get on the waitlist for the 2-year program. It certainly doesn't mean that you'll get in, but I've heard of a lot of people who entered the program from that situation. Also, don't give up on York! The competition might be steep, but they will look at your application from a critical social work lens, and your volunteer experience might shine there.
MostlyM Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Is anyone who has been accepted to U of T turning the offer down? Secondly, is anyone who was wait-listed at u of T not remaining on the wait-list because they are accepting other offers? Thanks everyone!

To be honest there's no point in stressing about it now. There's nothing you can do. Start thinking about how you could improve your application for next year.
Bettyg Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Question for anyone who did the 1 year bsw at uwaterloo: I am confused about the prerequisites. Do you have to be accepted to the program to take the pre reqs online? Or can I just sign up to take them?
