PhD or Specialist? I would be attending a NYC program, which for anyone who is aware of the standing lawsuit against the NYC DOE, only bilingual students who are accepted into the PIT (Psychologist In Training) program, are paid for this internship. Apparently, about twenty years ago, it was determined the public schools weren't providing adequate services to bilingual students (probably because there was a huge need for bilingual school psychologists!) Anyway, ALL other internships are unpaid. This is something I am dealing with as well, as there will only be my husband's income to support us during internship year, and throughout the full 3 years it will take to earn my certification. This is the sacrifice we, as graduate students, need to make to get where we need to be... If you are referring to a PhD program's internship, then forget all that I just said lol

Yup, specialist level. I hadn't heard about that, but that's crazy! I'm willing to take the chance that I'll have to accept an unpaid internship in order to go to school/live in my preferred location, but I wish it was easier to find out which states have funding/laws/whatever that allow them to provide paid internships.

That is a great question to ask the school!

Yeah, I definitely will. I was just wondering about the more general prevalence of paid internships and which states usually offer them, since I was so surprised to hear Massachusetts doesn't.

One of my top choice schools says it is almost impossible to find a paid internship in the third year, because they are so rare in the entire state of MA. They told me many students relocate to find a paid internship in another state. I've been trying to find data on the prevalence of paid internships by state and haven't been successful. Does anyone have any information on this? I don't like the idea of working for free for a year and logistically I'm not sure if I could support myself during that time, but if I want to end up working in MA long-term it seems best to do an internship there. What do people who take unpaid internships do for money?! Is it common to take a full-time unpaid internship? I know this is further down the road for me but I'd really like to have all the info going in.

Thanks!

This article really answers your question, but I'm not sure if you can see it if you're not a member of NASP or if it's behind a pay wall. Basically, in the Northeast, only 32% of specialist-level school psych interns get paid, and the average stipend is $12,764. That's the lowest percentage and amount in any of the four regions. (Doctoral interns have it better, at 67% and $15,740, but are still the lowest among their peers in other regions.) The Northeast just has a tradition of not paying their interns, and since people keep taking the internships, they can keep doing it.

It will be a big group so the spotlight will not be on you. I would try to stick to personal stuff (but not TOO personal). Just be chatty and pleasant and make a good first overall impression. Just don't do anything crazy like get drunk and dance on the table. You really don't need to overthink it!

Don't be a drag and ask too many program-related questions. People want to get to know you outside of the formal academic surrounding - remember, you will soon be a colleague!

I found that the dinners the night before were actually focused on the social aspect of the program. In the conversations I had over dinner, we talked about the program but it was more like a social mixer and there were other conversation topics to be had. One thing I wish I had done was save my questions for the POI until the actual interview -- try to get to know them as a person and not just as an academic.

Thank you both very much for your insight!!  :)

Is anyone going to be at UMass Amherst tomorrow? (Or, did anyone attend their interview day last week?)

Thank you so much, that's exactly what I was looking for. I can see part of the article but unfortunately not the chart that lists the information by state/region, so thank you for letting me know the stats for my region.

Just received word today that I have an interview with St. John's University for their MS School Psychology program. I have an interview with Adelphi coming up as well. Was accepted to Brooklyn Long Island University, and waiting to receive a decision from my interview with Fordham last week. That makes ALL programs that I applied to I have received invitations to interview! After taking 3 gap years, studying abroad, juggling various volunteer/research/intern and part time jobs, I can finally say I will be going to graduate school! Even though my admission status is still pending with the 3 other programs, I will indefinitely be going somewhere! My GRE scores weren't anything to talk about and I STILL got an interview with St. John's (only program I applied to that required the GRE score to be submitted with the app). Best of luck to all! :)

Congratulations!!! :)

I applied last minute and didn't think I had a shot at getting in anywhere, but I just received my first acceptance today!

Fordham said they will send out decisions next week.

For those in the School Psych program already, is there a dress code for class? I know some students might be coming from work and already dressed up but what if you are not in the work field, should I show up in professional clothes to class as well?

Which interview day were you at? I was there 2/25 for the PD program. They told us mid March, though that sounded more like a projected time frame. I imagine the snow may slow things down..

I was also wondering about the dress code, and can't believe I forgot to ask about that during the interview! The students who were there with us shared their email addresses, so we can probably ask them? I have their info if you need :)

Ha noooo. 2 girls in my cohort always show up wearing exercise gear, one consistently wears jeans, a hoodie and flip flops. Sometimes people come in dressed up because they were just working in the schools (our schools have a no jeans policy). So basically wear whatever you want!

Did anyone attend the Tufts interview yesterday?  I was invited but opted for a skype interview instead since I'm currently living on the other side of the world. I'd love to hear what the in-person interview was like!

Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances/interviews! :)

Nope! Wear whatever you're most comfortable in :) Most of my program dresses pretty casually for class (jeans, cardigans, sweaters, sundresses when it's warmer) if we don't have to go to a school immediately before/after.  Sometimes for night classes people will wear hoodies and jeans since it's late at night and we've all had a long day.  Some students will wear gym clothes if they plan on going to workout right after a morning class.  Professors don't seem to mind either way

Hi! Im also considering a school psychology program in Massachusetts and am concerned about the 3rd year unpaid internship.

Have you talked to your program to ask if you would be able to intern in another state for sure? I also need to do this. Im originally from Georgia and would prefer an internship further south or in another East Coast state.  I'd also like to hear more from anyone who's been there and done that!

Thanks,

I think most programs will let you do an internship in another state, but the issue is where you want to work after that. Logistically I think it's going to be easier to find your first "real" school psych job in the state you do your internship, especially because each state can have slightly different requirements. You might end up certified in the state you do your internship but not in the state you went to school in, I think.  Sorry that I don't know more than this, but it's definitely a reasonable thing to ask the program about before you accept!  Out of curiosity, what MA school(s) are you looking at?

I'm having the hardest time deciding between Northeastern and Tufts (specialist level). I know this is a good problem to have, but does anyone have any thoughts on either of those schools? Or suggestions for aspects of the programs to compare, aside from the obvious?

You might go back to last year's thread, I think people were making similar choices! You could also ask for the contact info of grad students at both schools and ask why they chose X over Y. I bet plenty of people had the same choice to make!

Just checked the Texas State University website and saw that I was admitted. I almost fell out of my chair with excitement. I can't believe I got in!!!

Question, when did you send in your application to St John's? I am still waiting to hear from them. Also more importantly, how did they contact you? I am a little bit worried, because I applied here to. I completed my application in February. The problem is that now my school is on spring break, so I would have no way of getting to my school mailbox for a week if they sent admit decisions through the mail  And their website doesn't post decisions as far as I know. I'm hoping they email. lol.

I emailed a faculty member I had kept in touch with after an open house to check up on the status of my application, since he had disclosed a few months ago that their tentative interview day would be in April. He provided me with the coordinator in the department who is responsible for emailing and scheduling interviews. I submitted in early December. Their deadline isn't until May 1, so I imagine they do multiple rounds of interviews. PM me and I can give you the coordinator's email.

This is so weird, but almost as soon as I posted that I got an email about it. I was told to email Linda to set up an interview. It may be different for me because I'm planning on enrolling at the Staten Island / Oakdale campus, not the Queen's campus. It's so weird that she emailed me right after I posted that though.

Congrats to you on your interview. Hopefully we will both get in and I will see you on campus. lol.

Nice! Yea, it is a different person. I would be attending the Queens campus though, if I did decide to go. good luck! :)

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if it would be inappropriate to call a school to confirm that I've been accepted.

I received an acceptance letter from a school a few weeks ago (before I even interviewed there), and I was told the next day that the letter was sent in error. Today, I received an acceptance via email from the same school. I know that the school would not possibly make the same mistake twice, but I do want to make sure before getting too excited. Would it be appropriate for me to call?

Thanks!

I mean, I guess... but it should be evident shortly. Why don't you email?

I am probably the happiest girl around! I got a call yesterday about my acceptance to University of Cincinnati! With a sizable scholarship! :) And I was also accepted into University of Dayton a week or so ago. Just waiting for Ohio State University now!
