I would be attending a NYC program, which for anyone who is aware of the standing lawsuit against the NYC DOE, only bilingual students who are accepted into the PIT (Psychologist In Training) program, are paid for this internship. Apparently, about twenty years ago, it was determined the public schools weren't providing adequate services to bilingual students (probably because there was a huge need for bilingual school psychologists!) Anyway, ALL other internships are unpaid. This is something I am dealing with as well, as there will only be my husband's income to support us during internship year, and throughout the full 3 years it will take to earn my certification. This is the sacrifice we, as graduate students, need to make to get where we need to be... If you are referring to a PhD program's internship, then forget all that I just said lol Yup, specialist level. I hadn't heard about that, but that's crazy! I'm willing to take the chance that I'll have to accept an unpaid internship in order to go to school/live in my preferred location, but I wish it was easier to find out which states have funding/laws/whatever that allow them to provide paid internships. They told me many students relocate to find a paid internship in another state. I've been trying to find data on the prevalence of paid internships by state and haven't been successful. Does anyone have any information on this? I don't like the idea of working for free for a year and logistically I'm not sure if I could support myself during that time, but if I want to end up working in MA long-term it seems best to do an internship there. What do people who take unpaid internships do for money?! Is it common to take a full-time unpaid internship? I know this is further down the road for me but I'd really like to have all the info going in. Thanks! schoolpsy15 Posted March 4, 2015 Share Posted March 4, 2015 It will be a big group so the spotlight will not be on you. I would try to stick to personal stuff (but not TOO personal). Just be chatty and pleasant and make a good first overall impression. Just don't do anything crazy like get drunk and dance on the table. You really don't need to overthink it! Don't be a drag and ask too many program-related questions. People want to get to know you outside of the formal academic surrounding - remember, you will soon be a colleague! I found that the dinners the night before were actually focused on the social aspect of the program. In the conversations I had over dinner, we talked about the program but it was more like a social mixer and there were other conversation topics to be had. One thing I wish I had done was save my questions for the POI until the actual interview -- try to get to know them as a person and not just as an academic. I have an interview with Adelphi coming up as well. Was accepted to Brooklyn Long Island University, and waiting to receive a decision from my interview with Fordham last week. That makes ALL programs that I applied to I have received invitations to interview! After taking 3 gap years, studying abroad, juggling various volunteer/research/intern and part time jobs, I can finally say I will be going to graduate school! Even though my admission status is still pending with the 3 other programs, I will indefinitely be going somewhere! My GRE scores weren't anything to talk about and I STILL got an interview with St. John's (only program I applied to that required the GRE score to be submitted with the app). Which interview day were you at? I was there 2/25 for the PD program. They told us mid March, though that sounded more like a projected time frame. I imagine the snow may slow things down.. I was also wondering about the dress code, and can't believe I forgot to ask about that during the interview! Ha noooo. 2 girls in my cohort always show up wearing exercise gear, one consistently wears jeans, a hoodie and flip flops. Sometimes people come in dressed up because they were just working in the schools (our schools have a no jeans policy). So basically wear whatever you want! Wear whatever you're most comfortable in Most of my program dresses pretty casually for class (jeans, cardigans, sweaters, sundresses when it's warmer) if we don't have to go to a school immediately before/after. Sometimes for night classes people will wear hoodies and jeans since it's late at night and we've all had a long day. Thanks, LF I think most programs will let you do an internship in another state, but the issue is where you want to work after that. Logistically I think it's going to be easier to find your first "real" school psych job in the state you do your internship, especially because each state can have slightly different requirements. You might end up certified in the state you do your internship but not in the state you went to school in, I think. Sorry that I don't know more than this, but it's definitely a reasonable thing to ask the program about before you accept! Out of curiosity, what MA school(s) are you looking at? You might go back to last year's thread, I think people were making similar choices! You could also ask for the contact info of grad students at both schools and ask why they chose X over Y. I received an acceptance letter from a school a few weeks ago (before I even interviewed there), and I was told the next day that the letter was sent in error. Today, I received an acceptance via email from the same school. I know that the school would not possibly make the same mistake twice, but I do want to make sure before getting too excited.
