taylorhop91 Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Hi everyone, Anyone else out there considering attending NAU's full-time regular track for SLP? I was wondering if anyone has any insight they can share about the program. I'm an out of state applicant and don't know too much about NAU/Flagstaff. Thanks
anthropologygeek Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 I went to NAU for undergrad, and Flaggstaff is an amazing place. Your love it
Mia6714 Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 I got accepted to the full time regular track. I would like to know more about the program/living in Flagstaff as well. I'm mainly concerned with the out of state tuition :/
CBG321 Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 I don't have much information but am also looking their program. I have heard Flagstaff is really cool though. I know an SLP that went to NAU but the program was going through some changes/issues when she graduated. I'm sure it has improved since then b/c she graduated a while ago, but i'd love to hear that first hand from more recent students!
taylorhop91 Posted March 15, 2015 Author Posted March 15, 2015 Yes, it would definitely be helpful to talk to some current grad students at NAU! I'm concerned about the out of state tuition as well... it's going to be a tough decision. It is good to hear that Flagstaff is a great place though!
Positive Thoughts Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I was accepted here as well and I'm also concerned about the tuition. But- the SLP at the school where I went to NAU for her M.S. and it made her a competent clinician and she is a wonderful SLP. I've also heard great things about Flagstaff, I'd be happy to attend.
mayaella Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I would love any information anybody can provide! I've also been accepted but I don't really know anything about the program!
mhny1224 Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I applied to NAU for the full-time regular track but haven't heard anything back from them, are they sending out acceptances in waves or should I be concerned?
graceSLP Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I have also been accepted and don't know a whole lot about the program, but am excited to hear that Flagstaff is great! Does anyone know what clinical opportunities they provide for graduate students, other than the on-campus clinic? Like many of you, I'm also concerned about the out of state tuition. Is anyone else finding it hard to figure out how much total it would cost, for NAU and other schools? I tried to compute it for all of the schools I applied to, but some make it difficult to figure out!
taylorhop91 Posted March 15, 2015 Author Posted March 15, 2015 Mhny1224, not sure how they go abut sending out acceptances, just that the website says that they do it by March 31. So there could still be time! GraceSLP, from what I can tell, NAU's out of state tuition for the whole program is just short of 50k :/ including summers. I'm hoping I overestimated though.
SLA Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I applied to the part time summer program but haven't heard anything yet. Anyone know of any acceptances going out for that yet?
spedtospeech Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Hi guys, I applied to the summers only program and got rejected for a 2nd time. I feel like I'm hitting my head against a block wall. I was wondering if you guys could give me any inside into what you included in your essay and extra experience did you put on your resume? I just feel like I'm getting to old to keep doing this year after year. Thanks for any extra help!
Mia6714 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I got accepted... but I didn't do my undergrad there. If you did your undergrad there I think schools have some kind of incentive to want to have more diversity in their program. I didn't get accepted to BYU which is where I did my undergrad. Also I'm out of state, and I'm not sure how Arizona is doing as far as money but if they don't have a lot to give to schools it makes sense that schools want out of state applicants so they can charge out of state tuition. What I'm trying to say is that it might not be anything with your essay. My GPA wasn't very high, but I rocked the GRE and I think that really helped me. Maybe take the GRE again? I also worked in schools with diverse kids for a year after graduating which really helped me know why I wanted to be an SLP and gave me some unique insight into my letter. I'm not sure if any of that helped but good luck! Maybe apply to a bunch of schools next year if you only applied to one this year... I haven't seen anyone who wasn't rejected by at least one school so applying to a lot really increases your chances. Good luck! graceSLP 1
KellyyyB22 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I did my undergrad at NAU. I didn't apply there for grad school, but I do love it there. I met many of the professors in the grad program and they are all really awesome and helpful. I love the size of the school too! The campus isn't too big but not too small either. Super easy to get around and the building that the clinic is in, is pretty decent too!
spedtospeech Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Thanks! I was hoping that my background would help get me into the program. I am a highly qualified special education teacher who works with sever kids at their house, SLPA and department chair of the High School special education department. I applied to several schools but have only heard back from NAU. Its hard for me to go anywhere because my family lives here in Arizona, my husband is a fireman and I have two kids. I wish we could pack up and leave just for me to go to school but my options are extremely limited. I guess my best option is going to be talk to NAU and possibly take some grad classes and re-take my GRE. Congrats to everyone who got accepted I hope to meet you guys next year!

spedtospeech Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I got a rejection email on 3/19 (but I only applied to the summers only) last year they never got back to me.....What program did you apply to?
SLA Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I got a rejection email on 3/19 (but I only applied to the summers only) last year they never got back to me.....What program did you apply to? I also applied to the summers only track. I'm currently an SLPA and I live out of state. I'm not exactly the ideal candidate in terms of GPA and GRE scores but I'm still hoping to be considered. I haven't heard anything back from them yet besides the initial emails saying that my application has been submitted. I'm hoping to hear something this week, I'm going crazy!
spedtospeech Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I would call them. Like I said last year they never even got back to me that I didn't get in until I called them.
graceSLP Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 To those who have been accepted, have you gotten any more information about the program? I am still waiting to hear from 3 schools before making a decision but I'd like to already be prepared to make that decision.. Unfortunately I live to far away to visit before April 15th... From what I can see, their website doesn't have a whole lot of information about clinical opportunities and such, other than their on-campus clinic. Also, it looks like the NAU full-time program is a full 2 years (6 semesters), including two summers. A lot of the other schools I've applied to are only 5 semesters, without that last summer. I also can't seem to find any information on if a thesis is required? Does anyone have any information on any of this? I think it would be great to talk to a current grad student but I'm not really sure how to go about that. Do I just email someone from the department and see if they can get me in touch with a student?
Mia6714 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I made my final decision and notified NAU that I have to decline their offer because I have accepted elsewhere. Thought I would post here because I know if I was on the waitlist I would love to hear that people were declining ha. Anyway good luck with grad school everyone!
shirleybeans Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Hi, I've been accepted to the summers-only track at NAU. I'd like to connect with others who are attending this summer. Looks like someone started a facebook page, but I couldn't seem to find it. Does anyone have any information about the facebook page?
