Transcripts - help!

Does anyone know of any colleges that accept either unofficial transcripts or just transcripts from your degree-granting institution/last 2 years? I have a transcript being withheld, and I cannot afford to pay it off in time for application deadlines.

I can't help answer your question, but I would suggest reaching out to the schools you're planning to apply to and asking them directly if they would accept an unofficial transcript. Regardless of what their website says, they may agree to make an exception if you explain the problem.

"I didn't pay my parking tickets." :P

Well, then, why don't you have the money, if that is the case? :P

I think I should add to my signature this pearl of wisdom: being honest does not mean being candid. Just say that your financial situation makes it impossible for you to afford to pay for official transcripts at this time, but you hope that this will not preclude you from applying to X University. You will be happy to provide an official copy if and when you are accepted to the university.

(I wish all schools just did this in general, along with GRE scores. It's such a waste of money to have all these official copies of everything sent to multiple schools. Sure, they'd want to see an official copy before officially accepting anyone, but I'm only going to attend one school, so why should I have to pay 8-10 times? </rant>)

Ha, yes, very pithy.

Relatedly, the blog "Ask a Manager" has a stock phrase for referring to past situations such as "I was depressed in second year and got all D's" that I like and have mentioned here before: "I had a chronic health condition that has since been resolved."

I've noticed that a lot more schools (or a lot more of the schools I'm applying to this time around) are accepting unofficial transcripts. They'll only need the official transcripts once you're both accepted and choose to go to the university. That's 100% the way it should be done.

Only 1 of the 8 schools I applied to had that option, and only for transcripts, not for the GRE. Good to hear things are progressing in a positive direction.

Only one of my schools required official documents way back in the dark ages when I applied. Every other school either had an initial "screening" that allowed unofficial documents, or didn't require official documents until you're accepted.

Relatedly, on the market I loved jobs that didn't require letters until you were shortlisted.

Field specific. All of mine want them all up front before they'll even look at the application.
