jebus85 Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 She told me Monday, hopefully, but I really feel like it is grasping at straws to put any time frame on this. They are still waiting for DoE (head office?) to authorize the notification process. So far as I know, that has been the hold up since I spoke with her last. I facetiously suggested she leave that office's number on her voicemail message so they could receive the (insert a ridiculous amount) calls a day. Having already called twice, I think I'm going to rely on the forum now. Hoping we have some news come Friday on this thread...
humblemumblings Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 I just got the thumbs-up call from Javits. Actually it came yesterday, but I missed it and then time zones conspired against getting any news until this morning. So I guess they're notifying people.

Does anyone know if they've (presumably) already notified all applicants? I'm sure it's too much to hope that they haven't gotten through the list given the small number of fellows selected each year...
zeeavi Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 (edited) I received a call from Carmen a little while ago telling me I am was one of the recipients. Good luck everyone! I am sure it might take some time to get calls to everyone. Edited March 16, 2010 by borlow
kublai Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I e-mailed to check in and was told I'm an alternate. I'm not counting on it coming through, but it means they haven't notified all alternates yet. Good luck!
heythere Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I still haven't heard anything - no email, no letter, no phone call. Is there anyone else left like me? Maybe I should just call the office tomorrow...
fifthneville Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I emailed yesterday to ask if all those who had been awarded fellowships had been notified. Carmen replied that they have been and that I have not been recommended for funding. She attached a letter of rejection to the email. Perhaps if you email you can find out if you are an alternate, but at this point I would assume that if you have not been notified you're either an alternate or rejected. Good luck to those alternates and congratulations to the winners! PS: I'm not sure if it applied specifically to my case or not, but Carmen also mentioned that financial need only comes into the very final judgment and that often students with exceptional need are not given preference over those in more favored (i.e., humanities) fields. I'm guessing this applies to my situation since I am a very financially needy student (my EFC is 0) who applied to Psychology which is apparently too science-y for the Javits? Fingers crossed for the NSF GRFP.
lazycatfish Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Rejected when I emailed and asked the status. Just email if your stressed about it.
far_to_go Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 I e-mailed a few days ago to ask but have not heard back yet- boo :-(
Febronia Posted March 25, 2010 Author Posted March 25, 2010 I received an email from the program today saying that I'm an alternate.

natsteel Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Can anyone tell me if it is already too late to begin the process of acquiring the DUNS and TIN numbers necessary for the application?
Lizzla Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Can anyone tell me if it is already too late to begin the process of acquiring the DUNS and TIN numbers necessary for the application? If you're a US citizen, your TIN number is your social security number. TIN is just the more generic name for it and includes the numbers used by non-citizens for tax purposes in the US. A DUNS number is used to identify businesses and organizations--I was confused too when I read the Javits info, because as far as I know individuals don't have DUNS numbers. Maybe they mean that your graduate institution needs to have a DUNS number? Most universities do have them because the government uses them to track grant money. I think they meant the institution needs one and not the applicant--it's not mentioned anywhere else in the packet. Don't take this as the final word, but I think they were just being unclear.

I am so glad that it wasn't just me who found that part of the application instructions vague. It says: "...To do business with the Department of Education, (1) you must have a Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number and a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)... You can obtain a DUNS number from Dun and Bradstreet. A DUNS number can be created within one business day." When I go to the D&B website I only find ways for institutions or corporations, not individuals, to apply for a number. How did someone else who applied for the fellowship go about it? sra08 Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 In March I got an e-mail telling me that I was a "Javits Commended Scholar." I didn't realize that this meant I was actually an alternate for the fellowship! I got a call on Friday offering me a fellowship, quite unexpectedly. The only problem is that it now looks like I'm going to run into trouble with my department in terms of getting TA-ships for the duration of the fellowship. (I am entering my second year of graduate school.) Has anyone else experienced this problem with the Javits or another fellowship?

Do you just use the number for your college?
sra08 Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 sra08, when you applied what did you about getting a DUNS number?? Do you just use the number for your college? I don't really know what a DUNS number is, sorry. I might have put down some kind of code for my undergrad and grad institutions, but I don't really remember the specific terminology.
Lizzla Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 sra08, when you applied what did you about getting a DUNS number?? Do you just use the number for your college? The Javits website has been updated, probably because we all read the bit about the DUNS number and panicked: Important note regarding the FY 2011 Javits competition: Applicants for the Javits program are NOT required to get DUNS and TIN numbers. So no worries
Soul Invictus Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 I am sure this is a big departure from what you had been discussing but I have a question for all of you. I was recently contacted by the program director and chair of my department, encouraging me to apply for the Javits fellowship. This is my first year of graduate school. Am I even eligible? Things like this in the application really confuse me: Applicants must also either: be entering into a doctoral program in academic year 2011-2012, or have not yet completed the first full year in the doctoral program, in an eligible field of study for which they are seeking support; As I mentioned earlier, this is my first year. As of right now I have 0 graduate credits, but I start school in a week. Thanks for all your help and support. -S

Gerri Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Hi all, Does anyone know if nine letters of recommendation are required for the Javits fellowship? By nine I mean not nine different letters, but three originals of each of the three rec letters? The program seems to want things in threes so I'm just wondering if my professors should give me three letters each rather than one letter each. Thanks!
GeoFemme Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Hi Hgerri, You only need to submit one of each of the letters. Don't fret!
