kismetcapitan Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 (edited) I am a HGSE alum, MBE and this year I am applying for Ed.D. MBE is a really good program and it's very different. I am sure it's very hard to find what they are teaching there some place else. Good Luck to all of us! man, please tell me MBE isn't like Higher Ed where they are way, way more picky - I'm applying for MBE precisely because it's so unique (and I've got 12 years teaching experience so the TEP would offer less to learn)....and I am really hoping to hear some good news! I really should have applied to more than just Harvard - having only one application out is far too much stress, what was I thinking?? I didn't know Tufts had a Ph.D in education; since I went there undergrad I didn't really look at it for grad school. Maybe I should have - Jumbos rule Edited February 14, 2010 by kismetcapitan
snoopy Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I don't think MBE is picky about students. They admit people from all sorts of background. If you can show them that you are really interested in MBE, then you have a good chance. We have a bunch of teachers in my cohorts, many of whom have taught for several years. Don't lose hope yet, and good luck! Tuft doesn't have PhD in education. I applied to Child Development, instead. They have research there that matches my interest.
papercuts Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I have a question about the TEP deadline. I thought the deadline was also January 4th like other programs. The website says people can apply until February 5th. Did I get the deadline wrong all along? Or did they recently change it? If they changed it, why? What does that mean? God so many questions. None of it really matters though, the application is long submitted, luckily I have a full time job to drown me under work. Seriously though, does anyone know about this deadline issue?
TABout Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Hi all, I'm applying to TIE (Ed.M.) for Fall 2010. I've also applied to similar programs at Penn, Stanford, and Toronto, but HGSE is the decision I'm most eager/nervous to get back. Best of luck to everyone!
AnythingIsPossible Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Hello All, Has anyone applied to the EdLD program at HGSE? According to the last update email interview invites are supposed to go out between Feb 12 and Feb 26. Anyone get an invitation yet?
HarvardBound Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Hi, I applied to the TIE program for the 2010-2011 school year. My undergrad degree is in Special Education and Spanish Education. My graduate degree is in Educational Administration. I'm currently an assistant principal at a PK-5 school. I'm keeping myself busy by preparing to put my house on the market by March 1st. I only applied to Harvard and I have faith that I'll get in. Therefore, I'm functioning as if I've already been accepted. I have to think and active positively or else I'd be ridiculously stressed. I'm excited to have you all as my waiting buddies. I know the admission deadline is March 26th, but how much earlier do you think they'll begin to contact us? Has anyone considered where you'd live? Are you planning to live alone or with a roommate? That's a huge debate for me. I'd love to have a roommate to cut costs; however, how much is my peace worth? A bad roommate can ruin the whole experience! What are your thoughts?

A bad roommate can ruin the whole experience! What are your thoughts? Great questions! As a TIE ('07) alumnus and current Ed.D. student at HGSE, I might be able to address them. You'll likely hear back by mid-March, though that isn't certain given the rise in applications across the board the past couple of years. As far as your housing concern goes: admissions packets will contain information about on-campus graduate student housing, which is the way to go if you're concerned about peace-and-quiet. You'll also be given access to a secure website where you can browse or post to forums with information about other HGSE students looking for roommates. Best of luck!
bossanova4 Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I love how Harvard is making us all wait the LONGEST for their decisions. But they're HGSE, they can totally get away with this. I thought I could be strong, but they're the last school I'm waiting on...! Does anyone have any advice/stories in terms of financial aid for Ed.M. students? What are the staff members in the financial aid office like? MikeW02 1
htliu Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Hi all, I am an HGSE PhD applicant. I've been reading the acceptance/ decline posts and already saw some saying that they've been accepted via phone to the HGSE program Human Development and Education. But no one in the forum seems to have gotten any message from HGSE yet. I'm just curious if those are real acceptance posts? I've been devoloping this horrible habit of checking the acceptance/decline posts and this forum like every hour when I am in front of my computer... Think I'm going insane!! But glad to know there are people to share thoughts with. If anyone has any idea about how true these posts are, and if the program of Human Devolopment and Education has really sent out admissions already, please do reply.
kismetcapitan Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 (edited) yep, the time is getting close, but just like I thought, I'm buried in classes, now seven days a week. I had to hire another TA to unload some of the weight - so that I can literally zip out of class for 15 minutes and shove food down my throat! I thought I'd also be obsessively checking, but for anyone with a smartphone ( think I posted this earlier, oh well, I'll just repeat myself), I put an icon on my iPhone linking directly to the application website. So with push email, I'll see that results were posted, then hit the application icon, and then...it loads, and I'll know Regardless, I strongly recommend to prospective future applicants to NOT do what I did - apply only to one school, and Harvard at that! All eggs in one basket, oy. Although...it's going to be hard if I **do** get accepted. The money's lined up, but just leaving my school and my students for a "sabbatical", I feel like I'm abandoning them. I'm looking into webcam teaching software to stay in touch - does anyone have any good recommendations? What I'd love to have for an online software package would be a video screen, a whiteboard window, and a window where I can display a webpage for my students. But I need the growth and further development; how much research is available to master's students? I don't want to just take classes, there are educational projects and little research studies I'm dying to do. Thought I was going to leave my wife and one-year-old son in Korea while I'm at grad school, but I think I wouldn't be happy with the separation. Harvard does have good family housing available, last I checked. Will have to ponder that one; there's so much I want to do at Harvard that I may not have any time to see wife and kid anyways. jeanne Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 I'm bumping this up. I saw at least one acceptance, one rejection on the results search page. I think they were all for Human Development and Education. Can anybody verify this? I haven't heard either way yet and I'm just ready to know!

It is strange that they all seem to be from the Human Development and Ed. department. If you applied for a master's, I think those didn't come out yet. I hope that helps!

gem Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 I'm applying to the Ed.D. program and haven't heard anything either way. Any idea what this means? Should I call? I would say give them a call. Why not? It seems that the program Human Development and Education is the only one to whom anyone has been accepted. That's the program I applied to, so I have no idea about the others. The way I see it, it never hurts to call.
amelapay Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 (edited) I just logged into my application and the rejection was there. I had NOT yet received an email directing me to log in. It said decision available as of 2/25, but I really don't think I overlooked it yesterday... No worries, looks like I'm headed to Columbia. Best of luck to all. Editing to add - my HGSE track was Education Policy, Leadership & Instructional Practice Edited February 26, 2010 by amelapay

Editing to add - my HGSE track was Education Policy, Leadership & Instructional Practice I logged in and got a rejection notice. I'm decided on where I'm headed -- which is my #1 choice! -- so at this point it's kind of a fun game. Still, who likes being rejected?

I regret to inform you that you have not been offered admission to the Harvard Graduate School of Education for graduate study during the 2010-2011 academic year. The number and quality of applications, for the limited number of spaces available, exceeded our expectations. Consequently, we could not invite many fine applicants to join us. We appreciate your interest in the Harvard Graduate School of Education and wish you success in your future plans. Sincerely, Maria Curcio, Ed.M. '99 Director of Admissions I applied to both Ed.D and Ed.M, but as you can see they do not mention anything about Ed.M admission decision. Am I rejected from both program???

TSL, my letter was the same, and I also applied to both Ed.D & Ed.M. I don't know if we're rejected from both. The letter just says "graduate study," which could either mean we're rejected from both or that they simply have one generic letter that gets posted as soon as you're rejected from anything. I don't really care about being admitted to Ed.M because I'm attending another school instead (just checked the box as a backup, in case I didn't get into any doctoral programs), but if I were you I'd probably give them a call.
jeanne Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 OK, I got the rejection letter at 4:00. Oh well, I'm accepted to U of I and Wisconsin, which are both ranked better and have profs that I'd really like to work with anyway. Congrats to all who got in!
amyeray Posted February 27, 2010 Author Posted February 27, 2010 Sorry to hear about the rejections being posted. I only applied to an Ed.M. program and my application status is still what it has been (kind of a given that the masters students get notified later)... just FYI. Getting nervous knowing they are starting to send stuff out though. Good luck to everyone :-)
kismetcapitan Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 jeebus, has anyone who has applied **only** for an Ed.M. hear anything yet? I also logged in, in a bit of a panic - no change, still says "submitted". I'm gunning for MBE, Ed.M...still have NOT sent out applications anywhere else, so I'm totally committed! Committed as in, when rock climbing a serious cliff in Yosemite, there's a point where going down, or bailing onto a different route, is not an option...

kismetcapitan Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I hope it's mid-March as usual; I can handle two more weeks but more than that will probably drive me crazy!

I guess then other people who were rejected from Ed.D received different letters in the case they haven't been rejected from Ed.M yet?
Angelicasassy Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Sorry TSL! I think we will all hear back by March 12, or I should say on March 12, going by what happened last year. It seems they had many apps this year so I have a feeling I may not be headed back to any school this fall!
