but, UCLA's moving faster than I expected.

What do you mean by UCLA moving faster? I saw someone posted an acceptance to the DOTM program, has anyone heard anything or knows when to expect decisions?

I posted the Chicago Booth PhD Accounting waitlist result for on the survey section. Someone asked about my stats. I don't feel comfortable disclosing those just yet, but as for the other questions, unfortunately, the e-mail I received did not specify that information.

Does anyone have any historical information on the likelihood of successfully getting in from the waitlist at Booth for Accounting or other business areas?

Thanks! I don't have an absolute top choice right now. They're all great programs, so I'm keeping an open mind and visiting as many as I can.

Decaf,

I know you're not comfortable sharing your numbers. I've been accepted at some top accounting schools but rejected at MIT. I had 750 gmat and 3.94 gpa from top university.

I plan on making a decision in a short while. I'd be happy to post my profile then.

Most business PhD programs are so small that there's pretty much no way to guarantee admission across the board. As a result, it's actually quite common to gain admission to some top schools and be rejected from others. For example, I've been accepted at top programs (see signature) but rejected at MIT with a 3.97 from a Top 10 university and a 760 GMAT. And I'm honestly not surprised by that. When a program is only admitting 1-3 students, numbers don't matter as much as fit and other idiosyncratic factors that are hard to capture in a stats-oriented profile.

So, people have posted that they received emails to check the website and got rejections at one of the schools I am still waiting to hear back from. Obviously, I went directly to the school's website and logged in even though I had yet to receive the email. And nothing. No decision or anything. I don't understand. Do they do them individually and they haven't getten around to mine yet or am I possibly on the waitlist? Has anyone experienced this and/or have any idea?

I'm in the same situation as you, still have not heard from some of the schools that have already rejected people about a week ago. I hope it's not that they just are sending a rejection letter to me instead (seems like an inefficient way to do it, since I am all the way in Singapore).

What schools are you hoping to hear from?

I just left you a PM. Check your inbox!

How much of a role can/should location play into your decision making process?

Very much I think. You will be there a half a decade. But then you wouldn't have much time to do anything else other than school work.

I second what whitecastle said. You will be in that location for quite a few years, so you had better find it comfortable to live in. Else, it will end up eating into your performance in your studies.

I am officially done with the admissions process, so I don't mind sharing some of my stats. My GMAT was 740, with both sections' percentiles above 92nd. My undergraduate GPA was 4.0/4.0 from a top 10 public university. I have teaching experience but no research experience, and while I will never know exactly what my professors wrote in their letters, they must've been good enough. (I always chuckle when people say that their LORs are strong. How do you know for sure unless you read them? :))

I was admitted to NYU and Duke (will attend); waitlisted at Chicago, Washington (Seattle), and Emory; and rejected by HBS and WUSTL. In hindsight, applying to a lot of schools was definitely the right thing to do, but had I discovered this wealth of information from the AAA, I would've decided against applying to those programs that seem to prefer candidates with relevant work experience in public accounting, which I don't have. Other than that, I can hardly say that I have any regrets--to say I was 'thrilled' when NYU and Duke called me last month is an understatement by several orders of magnitude.

Oh man - I just got a waitlist form NYU after being rejected from them last week! I didn't even know that could happen. I'm guessing my chances are slim, but that definitely puts a wrench into my decision making process because I wouldn't want to forego that choice if it became available.

What to do? What to do?

That's really confusing! I guess that may be the reason why some schools do not inform students over rejections, since they might have to go back to them if their initial offers get rejected.

You do have until 15 April to make your decision, correct? So hopefully NYU would have given you an indication by then. All the best!

Since most admits have until April 15th to decide it's not unusual for people to be pulled off the waitlist after that initial deadline. In the mean time there's no harm in accepting your best offer, unless NYU indicates that they might be able to give you a final decision before April 15th.

Congrats btw! :) I'm sure that was confusing but it must have been a nice surprise.

Thought I'd pop in and say goodbye. Not sure what derailed me so badly, except perhaps a bit of naivete about the poor quant score, my age and my time away from academia. I am waitlisted at my first choice, but I'd say my odds are very, very poor, with two spots to fill and three people in front of me. Got rejected by UC today and am awaiting one more from a school that never so much as acknowledged my application, no less interviewed me...so I'm out. Given my age, this was kind of my last shot to get into a PhD program, so I'm looking out to see what my next step is.

Best of luck to all of you. It's been a long, strange journey.

Waytooold - If it's really your dream, it's never too late and you're never too old. And remember - in this economy, the level of competition this year was more fierce than ever. That said, if you really feel you cannot go through this again (and I definitely understand as the application process is AWFUL), there is surely something else in this world to make you happy. So try to keep your head up. Be glad you went for it. It's better to have tried and failed than never to have known what would happen. Good luck with whatever you decide to pursue!

I found this site today, and there are many others who share same agony that I am feeling. Waytooold, don't give up. You have your dream!

I'm also waiting for some news that somebody declines her/his offer, and it's very painful. I saw some of you here are very talented students, so you guys have many offers that I cannot imagine. So, if you have already made up your mind or you don't intend to accept your admission offers, I am sincerely asking the person havnig offers to decline them as early as possible. That would be really helpful for those who are desperately waiting for the other's decision, like me.

waytooold, I'm so sorry. This process is maddening and the high number of applicants and low number of spots makes it so difficult for admissions. Have you thought about retaking your GRE and reapplying next year? Or maybe taking the GMAT instead? (That way if you don't like your score, you can still use your GRE, since many programs take both.) If this is really what you want to do, you're never too old.
