jacib Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Great!! CONGRATULATIONS!! You must feel wonderful. Are you interested in doing soc psych work? Man, I go out and have a few drinks in my time zone and there are tons of new acceptances! Congrats to everyone, especially Deckard, who if I'm not mistaken was a little shaken by Columbia. See, it is all some crap shoot! Most special especial congratulations to Captiv8d! Way to go, kid! My folks lived in Des Moines for a bunch of years while my mom was in school. By all accounts a great place to raise kids. I know you were down about Princeton, but you got five years of funding at one of your top choices! How sweet is that? That must just take so much weight off your shoulders. (P.S. It's clear you've already started the torturous "What would it take for me to turn own this offer" games in your head... I for one can't tell if such things are fun or horrible yet.)
captiv8ed Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Aw thanks everyone. And especially jacib! Yes, it feels so awesome! I don't even want to think of the next round. Right now it means I am going to graduate school!! WOOHOOO!!! I am not interested in social psych, I know that is their big focus. My focus is on conservative Christianity, and Jennifer Glass is there. Jennifer Glanville also has done work in my field of interest.
taiwanadian Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Congratulations captiv8ed! It must feel so good to know that you're going to be going to grad school this coming fall, and funded too!
focused Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Another one here. I'm in shock! EdPolicy - How'd you get the info that there were 2 acceptances? I'm not sure if I'm one of those you were referring to specifically, but I got a call from the dept today. Due to time differences, the call came in the wee hours of the morning where I live. Definitely not a prank call though! Deckard - I am so sorry. I was just scrolling through here again and realized that I responded to your question directed to EdPolicy, but didn't even say congratulations! I was so excited yesterday, I wasn't even thinking properly. So forgive me, and CONGRATULATIONS:-) I'm definitely attending the admit day, so perhaps I'll see you there.
EdPolicy Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Thanks for answering on my behalf, everyone! And congrats to deckard. Well-deserved.
nutmeg Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Congrats to those folks who heard from Berkeley today! Anyone want to claim those acceptances?
deckard Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Thanks everyone for the congratulations, it's nice to feel the love It's been a long journey for me (although admittedly, the real journey has only just begun). I started applications in 2006 after several years working. Got a slew of rejections, but the chance to get my MA in the US on a fully funded scholarship. That proved to be well-worth the time and effort spent, not career-wise in terms of job opportunities or wages, but in shaping my research interests and also getting to know professors whom I respect and can have a conversation with. Throw in another year's work at a research institute where I had opportunities to write at least one scholarly article, and my application in 2009 was much stronger than the one three years ago. You discover a lot about yourself during the application process. I seriously believe the whole process forces you to think more than once whether it's all worth the opportunity cost (which can be huge). Anyway, here's my congratulations to you folks who did get in this time and I hope we keep in touch when we're officially "graduate students"!
EdPolicy Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Slightly off-topic, but does anyone think today is too quiet?
hip2btriangle Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Slightly off-topic, but does anyone think today is too quiet? yep.
JohnBom Posted February 12, 2010 Author Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) Slightly off-topic, but does anyone think today is too quiet? calm before the storm? Edited February 12, 2010 by Astronautka
taiwanadian Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 calm before the storm? Only if it's a storm of acceptances!!
JohnBom Posted February 12, 2010 Author Posted February 12, 2010 Only if it's a storm of acceptances!! Naturally
sociolog86 Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 I was wondering the same thing... Maybe snowmageddon got the best of the adcomms?
Maya Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 And what's worse is that isn't it a holiday on Monday for you guys in the U.S.? (I'm Canadian).....so that means we get a day of silence today followed by 3 more days of certain silence, right?

maximus82 Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Hey guys, I just wanted to point out that the only acceptance I've gotten so far came on a Saturday. But by all means, enjoy your weekend. do something fun. don't do what i do and sit in front of the computer hitting "refresh" on my email.
socialcomm Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 I got an acceptance at UC Riverside last night -- hopefully the start of the storm of acceptances for everyone else who hasn't heard!
nutmeg Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Where are all the answers? And the celebrations? Astronautka's "sociological corner of joy" somehow has turned into a mid-February John Cage composition. What gives? If I'm going to check out this site as often as I do, the least the adcomms could do is admit some GradCafe folks every now and again. For real. Oh, and I'm still irrationally hopeful about Berkeley, mainly because I'm 0-for-2 (Penn and Princeton) and almost positive my Harvard rej is en route. If we can't have answers and celebrations, maybe we could just have desperate dreams. Which schools are you delusional about?
EdPolicy Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 (edited) Which schools are you delusional about? Harvard's Social Policy & Sociology program, for sure. They take approximately 2 people per year, from what I've heard, so I have no earthly reason to be hopeful about it - but somehow I still am! In celebratory news, I was admitted into an interdisciplinary predoctoral training program at Stanford last night. (I had already heard about the sociology department, but this was big for me.) I really hope news picks up for all of us! Edited February 18, 2010 by EdPolicy

JohnBom Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 Michigan! And, it came three minutes after the email from Wisconsin saying that I was awarded a fellowship! What a day.
risapiecees Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Just found out I got in to UNC! I was sure I was rejected after everyone was posting admits a few weeks ago and I had heard nothing, but today I got an email "congratulating me on my acceptance," and inviting me to the recruitment weekend. At first I thought maybe I had ended up on the wrong email list (I still had no contact, no status change on my online app.), but finally I searched through my mail and found an acceptance letter! It must have arrived yesterday or the day before. So excited!

Hearing your result makes me a bit more hopeful. There is a lesson for all of us who take no news as bad news. Congratulations! (This is a corner of joy again.)
rogue Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Yay! Congrats Astronautka, risapiecees, and everyone else who's been getting good news! I feel like the floodgates are really going to open in the next week or so.
maximus82 Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Congratulations to all the people who are getting acceptances!
