workingjourno Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 I want to learn more about science and environment so that I can report on issues in these areas with more authority. I was a really good biology student in high school, but could not continue it. What programs can I consider now? I'm 26, and a fairly accomplished journalist with 5 years of experience covering pharmaceuticals and healthcare in India for an international news agency. Thanks in advance for any thoughts/ideas/suggestions.
Quickmick Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 The further up the educational ladder you go, the higher the degree of specialization often become. For example there are people who spend a lot of there time looking at microbial communities in a couple of inches of the benthos. If you are looking for something to give you a broader understanding you might want to start by looking at Environmental Science or Environmental Studies. In either case you should be able to find highly interdisciplinary programs that may give you the broad picture, and more specific elements of the subject matter you see yourself covering the most in your profession. This is pretty general, but I hope it gives you a place to start.
Neist Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I'm not sure what sort of coursework you're looking for, but have you considered science writing or science communications programs? These immediately come to mind: http://lsc.wisc.edu/http://esc.web.unc.edu/http://gsas.columbia.edu/content/academic-programs/earth-and-environmental-science-journalism There are several programs similar to the above. Let me know if this is the sort of thing you might be interested, and I'll look for a directory. I've discovered a directory before, but I can't seem to find it at the moment...
