I just saw that my MA supervisor was on the selection committee for my application...oh dear. Now I wait even more nervously.

How did you find out? Is there a list of names/committee members on the website?

Oh wait. I'm an idiot. The list is the selection committee from 2007-2008. Sorry. It's a bit bizarre that they'd just keep old committee lists on the site like that and get uppity grad students like me all fired up.

But you can check out the current list for the 2010 competition here: www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/site/about-crsh/committees-comites/standard_research-ordinaire_recherche-eng.aspx

Hmmm -- Standard Research Grants and the MA/PhD award committees are different, I believe. The former are awarded to Faculty, not grad students, no? There is some language on the SSHRC site that they only disclose names of selection committee members after the close of fiscal.

RE: having old or current friends or advisors on the selection committee:

SSHRC has a very strict conflict of interest policy. If someone knows you, they won't participate in the discussion about you. I know because I may have... um... read through some policy...

I'm confused. Those seem like very broad categories and I don't remember being asked about those ones. Do they route your application to a particular committee based on where your sub-area fits best? I'm guessing yes and that is is a dumb question. Jeeeez, I don't think I recognized a single name on what I'm guessing is my committee (well, my committee as it was last year). I wonder how much they change, year to year.

Oh yes, you are right! I thought I had found the updated list, but it seems they haven't posted one since 2008...

Hmm, we must be getting close because the list of people viewing this thread is growing.... :P People, we are in the home stretch!! Very exciting. By the way, anyone know what the earliest time is that the mail could arrive on someone's doorstep in Canada? Average time would be helpful as well, then we know at what point in the day we can call it a day on this thread.

Well, I live in Ottawa, so I'm assuming I'd be one of the first to get a letter.

One thing to keep in mind is that adjudication takes place in March. Right now, we're waiting on SSHRC staff to compile data, mail letters, etc. So it really depends on how fast they are! (lol, maybe they will sick of all the emails and try to get them out as soon as possible!_

The waiting is making me insane. I'm the primary income in my partnership, and I have some savings but until we all hear back.. the status of my funding is in flux. Talked with my department today, they're still waiting. They are surprised about how long it's taking!

Eeeep... good luck everyone. =/

Oh, also:

how much do you guys try to publish? Is it realistic to aim for 1-2 pubs per year?

(looking at philosophy/ literature/ social and political thought people in general, because i know it varies a lot based on program of study)

In Social Sciences, the pressure to publish is quite substantial. My goal is at least one publication a year. Hopefully, now that I've completed my first year of coursework, I'll be able to get two or three articles out of the papers I wrote. this might be somewhat ambitious though.

So yeah, one publication.. a couple conferences. It varies considerably by discipline I think. It always helps to have a few extra lines on your CV =)

Yeah, it seems like the whole publishing thing varies a lot from discipline to discipline. It's expected that by the time I graduate, I will have 1-3 published articles in really good, reputable journals, plus have several conference presentations under my belt.

Anyone else think we'll hear something on Monday or Tuesday of next week? I'm getting really impatient!

I have 3 presentations, only one at a "real" conference, and finally got my first publication confirmed 2 months after sending in the SSHRC application, so that sucked. But for next year, I will be ready! By the end of my PhD (which I'm starting in the fall) I hope to have at least 2 more "real" conference presentations, and 2-3 papers in good journals. They will probably all be co-authored though.

I think that when the mail comes on any given day just depends on where you are in someone's mail route. I used to get mail around 10 every morning, now it's around 3 in the afternoon. I bet the ealiest is around 9:30-10 after they've picked up all their mail for the day and driven out to their route.

some common advice on publishing that i've received (in the social sciences) is to aim for at least 1) one first author publication out of your MA work and two first author publications out of work done during the PhD, and 2) one of those articles to be published in a top tier journal in either your general field or subfield (as some of the "top tier" journals in a subfield would be considered "second tier" in the field generally)

Posted

That sounds like reasonable advice. I'm going to have a publishable paper out of my MA work, but it's a little frustrating because that was only confirmed AFTER SSHRC deadlines passed.

Posted

I agree! I was in the same position, but my paper was accepted in between my departmental ranking and when the applications were sent off to Ottawa, so our Grad Studies office kindly let me amend my application.

Lucky! Oh well; the more I talk to people in the Humanities, the more I realize that publications are not all that important for a first year PhD student. Hopefully I made up for it in other parts of my app!

My department got this message yesterday from grad studies:

SSHRC results - update

SSHRC is ‘currently in the process of producing the National Doctoral results for the beginning of next week and the Master’s results should follow shortly after’. It is hoped the scholarship office will know these results by the end of next week.

Maybe the optimists were right and we will have results by early next week?

^^ last year, MA results were released first. It would be awesome if PhD results came out earlier this year!

Thanks for posting this info. It's funny how much vagueness one notices in statements when they really want to know something with certainty. For example, how should we interpret "producing the results for the beginning of next week"? I'm guessing that Monday could be the day people start receiving news. Maybe the letters have already been picked up or dropped off to Canada Post....That's my hunch anyway.

Hi all,

I have a serious dilemma on my hands. I have been awarded a fellowship at my institution that, although decent, is not really comparable to a SSHRC. I have decided that if I get a SSHRC, I will take it and decline the internal award. However, the people who administer the award are putting pressure on me to make a decision and I'm worried that they are going to force me to decide before I know about the SSRHC! It's starting to really look that way. So...assuming that people start finding out about the PhD SSHRC results tomorrow, what do you think are my chances of actually getting SSHRC to disclose my results over the phone? It seems so ridiculous that they would not. But maybe they would not believe me that I have another deadline, or perhaps they won't care. The problem is that I am in the US and chances are I won't get the results for another week at least, assuming that people start finding out tomorrow. :S

Perhaps I could have my grad studies coordinator contact them directly? They do release results to the departments of undergrad applicants, so perhaps they might consider doing the same in this case??

Has anyone ever been in a similar situation? They present themselves as this impenetrable, Kafka-esque organization, but surely there are real human beings with decision making power who can be of assistance if circumstances warrant consideration?

Uggghh...

Just accept the award if you have to. Deal with SSHRC when you win it.
