grad_wannabe Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 ACK I can't believe it's here already. ALL of my schools told me "decisions will be made in March." This is the month that I've by turns dreaded, eagerly anticipated, feared, awaited and egged on. There is a big, muddied, undefined cloud of hope/worry in my mind, and its name is March. Two of my schools told me last Tuesday that they would "make calls next week" (including the school I interviewed with that day). That means THIS WEEK. Two schools, both of whom told me months ago that "decisions would be made in March" have practically ceased to exist for me. I haven't heard anything from them, and have convinced myself I won't get in (based on my surveys of other applicants here on this board, incidentally). But, still, there is the tiny part of me (buried inside the cloud called March) that insists there's still a chance. And, truth be told, there is - and that question will be answered in so uncertain terms by the end of this month. Good luck, everyone!
Marshall Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 omg it IS MARCH. ACK. At my interview, my interviewer told me the adcom was meeting to make its final decisions ON MARCH 1. That's TODAY. That means 18 hours or so from now, a bunch of people will be deciding my future. ...and I might not hear back for DAYS afterward. DAYS. My new fear is that I will be waitlisted. I do not know HOW I will cope. (Okay, yes, I know I'll cope with it the way everyone else does...by waiting, because that's what you do. But right now, it feels like I'll spontaneously combust if I have to wait any longer.) Yeah, my interviewer told me that decisions would be made last wednesday. Stilllllllll havent heard back. I'm expecting rejection- I hope the best for you though! March, may you be good to me. I'm leaving the country for 8 days starting wednesday- I'm a nervous wreck that I wont be able to check my mail or e-mail!!!
LatteDarling Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 I'm scared. I want to know but I'm afraid to check the admissions page for the fear of another rejection. 7 schools have yet to make their decision on my application, WTF??? *fetal position in bed*
Sarah S. Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 March did not start off by being nice to me! I got two rejections within a three minute period. One in the mail and then one through email. I'm kind of a mess right now.
richinsane Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 ARGGGG first rejection..... hope march get better...
BCHistory Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 I'm still waiting for nine more schools. March should be a busy month!

At least you didn't get time to recover from one before the other one hit, so it's sort of like you only have to feel dejected once for both. But I hope this is the precursor to something very good.

Being rejected from Boulder wasn't so bad because it wasn't a very good fit for me but after opening the envelope and reading it and immediately getting a text telling me I had an email from Duke...at least I was already negative so I didn't have that surge of hope! But wow it hit hard. Now spending my day stalking the forums here.

I applied to the Odum School of Ecology there, and apparently now the school of graduate studies needs to make decisions about funding before I'll hear back from the department. Hoping to hear soon!

Hi there! I heard back from UGA last...Monday I think. They contacted me by post in an envelope that was pretty beat up. That stinks that you have to wait more! Waiting's the worst.

Sarah S. Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Just a query, why are you so upset when you have been accepted at Purdue? I am so happy that I got in to Purdue! I used to hope that I would only get into one place so I wouldn't have to make a tough decision. Now that it looks like that's what's happening, I feel like I want to at least have an option. I only applied to places I would be happy attending but a PhD program would have been nice.

Sarah S. Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 (edited) I am very ashamed to say that I envy you so much. Aw no need to do that! Your sig shows that you still have options! One year isn't that long. I don't usually sound like such a brat by the way. Promise! Edited March 2, 2010 by Sarah S.
BongRips69 Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Starting off the month right with an acceptance (UDEL)! 2 for 2 so far... let's go March!!!
ColorlessGreen Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 I like March. March is good. Got an acceptance on the first day, so I figure this is my month! I knew it couldn't all be like February...
Summit_Bid Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Since 1997 every year on March 3rd something really bad happens to me. Sometimes I think it's the power of suggestion so I try to have a positive outlook...but it never works. March 3rd is always my personal Friday the 13th. The past two years it's been across the board PhD rejections on 3/3. If that's not what's happening to me tomorrow then I bet I'll be called for jury duty.

The past two years it's been across the board PhD rejections on 3/3. If that's not what's happening to me tomorrow then I bet I'll be called for jury duty. I have a slightly similar thing that happens to me. Ever since I was 4 or 5 I would regularly look at the clock at 9:11 am or pm and I used to joke and say that it was to remind me how to dial 9-1-1 (since it was still fairly new in the 1980s). For a long time after 9/11/2001 when I looked at the clock and saw 9:11 I obviously thought about 9/11. One day my mother was talking about how terrible she felt for my grandparents...you see my grandmother's birthday is 9/11, so now every time I see 9:11 on the clock, or on 9/11, I just think of my grandmother and keep her in my thoughts. I figure it's all about the perception of the day and trying to make the best of it. Hopefully tomorrow brings you GOOD news, or at least a sunny day. Or, tell your friends that on 3/3 every year you expect them to take you out for dinner & drinks...guilt them into it sidenote: my grandfather is an avid science geek, lives in Florida and always watches the shuttle launches (you can see some of them from the back porch), his birthday is January 28th, the same day as the space shuttle Challenger accident.
LatteDarling Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 I give up. This is just getting redunkulous... I'm going to the gym and pretend I don't have any more applications "being processed" or "Submitted".
caramel_geek Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Just a thought to this who will be waiting past March to say April: What if a school sends out an acceptance or rejection on April 1st (April fools day) and then rescinds the decision the next day saying that it was all a joke... isn't that just a horrible thought? Has that ever happened? I'm dreading that day in April but March, March it is! OMG. If they do that to me, I'd be freaking out (on April 1st) and totally forgot that it's April 1st. And then the next day, I'd be really really mad at them for doing this to me I might even get a heartattack
joro Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I received my 2nd acceptance today via email and was also awarded a Dean's Distinguished Fellowship. No idea what that is, but okay!!
Babbling Dweeb Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I received my 2nd acceptance today via email and was also awarded a Dean's Distinguished Fellowship. No idea what that is, but okay!! Awesome! Congrats to you!
afritz87 Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 AHHH got my first acceptance today! Even though I'd rank the school 5 out of 7 in my preference order, it's still a relief. Funny, too, because it was the latest application I submitted (February 1st), and my top choice (which promised notifications BY the first week of March) was due sooo early, on December 5th. These places follow no patterns, do they?
