This was my biggest addiction during undergrad: https://annies.alice.com/products/1275979 sooo goood. I am a tea fanatic as well. And, HigherEd, those chocolate covered bananas sound spectacular!

Rooting for you, EdYouKateOr!

Thanks! I have no idea what that status even means, tbh. Juuust looking for reasons to be hopeful!
-
Gah, my application status says 'in dean's office for final review' at George Washington. My interview went really well there, so I'm hopeful, but eeeek.

My undergrad college didn't even send a big envelope. I was ED and all of us just got boring envelopes, and we all assumed it was a rejection... At least we have previous years to give us a guideline for HGSE's timeline. Give or take, anyway. Wonder how things are going up on Appian Way?

How are you all doing, EdLD folks? Hang in there - another M.Ed hopeful + general cheerleader

I know. I'm so scared I will log on to see an acceptance and, half an hour later, a rejection. Computer errors or something. Eeeeeeep!

The professors in my prospective program were pretty warm to lots of different backgrounds though. I remember the director telling me about a business student coming to the Arts in Education program, which is counter-intuitive. I think that everyone's coming from something very different and want very different things out of the program, so I wouldn't worry, at least, about having a thin resume education-wise. I'm sure your experience informs your desire to get into Ed in some awesome way!

Perfectly put, CQE!

I think you probably make a fabulously competitive applicant, ASzofer! I'm sure all of you awesome people do. And CQE, I totally understand how you feel. I'm reading over your stats right now and I feel ya - we're both pretty young (I just graduated), but you have a strong application and you'll bring a great perspective wherever you go, and fit is what matters most to HGSE. The moment I found out about the AIE program, it was just it for me. A totally perfect launching point for the things I'd like to do considering my love of museums and media and theater and ramblerambleramble! And that feeling's only gotten stronger since talking to faculty and current students and doing the open house thing. Gahhh, dreams!

Best wishes to everyone! It's going to be great. Right? Right. And EdNerd2013: When I was thinking about Curry, it always took awhile to hear from them. Perhaps they're bogged down!

What's the prettiest campus you've ever seen?

Somerville/Davis Square is adorable. It reminds me of a little beach town, but set smack dab in the city hills. -
Congrats, emg28! Aw yeah.

Now I have to namedrop. Has anyone else seen Swarthmore's campus? -

I visited Harvard's campus on a whim while interviewing for a different MLS program during my senior year (which I ended up not being cazy about). And it just pulled me in, it was so gorgeous. I am pretty spoiled, though. I went to a college for undergrad that's on an arboretum, and graduation takes place in an outdoor ampitheater. The vibe of a college campus is important for me, that's for sure. -
That's good to hear! Since a lot of people only just got their tax information, it seems reasonable that they'd be flexible. Most of those scholarships are crazy specific anyway.

I know, it's definitely stressful. I sent mine via certified mail and got confirmation of delivery, at least, but still... no confirmation makes me bite me nails!

m26, I have been browsing through past HGSE application threads and it looks like you aren't alone in submitting your aid app late! And it still worked out for people.

Hi DC/'burbs people! Just wanted to give a little bit of advice on one area. I'm from Frederick, and I've seen a few people, just in browsing this thread, that have asked about it, so hopefully this will help people moving to the area and considering Frederick. It's a really great, growing town. I think many consider it a rural town/D.C. exurb, but it's definitely got its own personality. Downtown Frederick in particular is really awesome; very historic, super cute, great bars/restaurants/music, and good shopping. There's a local liberal arts college, Hood, so there's a bit of a college population, but the bulk of Downtown is comprised of young professionals and families. You can get a very nice apartment (like, even a 2 bedroom) for ~$1500/mo. And, like much of MoCo, Frederick has a lot of typical suburban sprawl with every chain you could ever wish for. The public schools are great. The city's blossomed within the last ten years and with the ever-encroaching Metro Area I expect it to get even better. So, I think it's a really viable option for someone who is commuting to D.C. or NoVA. Okay, there's my glowing review.

Why do MLS/MLIS programs have such a bad rep?
merrysoprano replied to MissMoneyJenny's topic in Library Sciences Forum
I strongly considered doing an MLS (in the States) for a long time. I worked at my college library and loved it and I wanted the chance to continue my work. Ultimately (and after some great advice from my boss), I decided that the MLS degree at this point in time was a too specialized for me and the jobs I could get. As my boss said, an MLS degree gets you a library job, and that's about it, and it's even harder if you specialize with archives, YA lit, etc. My research led me to believe that a lot of people who might be MLS candidates are feeling the same way. I don't think it's necessarily that the programs themselves have a terrible reputation. The MLS is, broadly and currently speaking, an overly specific degree that needs to update itself in order to accomodate the changing needs of library/information science (though MIS fares better). Furthermore, since the MLS is the entry-level degree requirement, that exacerbates the funneling effect. -
I applied to two programs. At this point, I really love them both! I applied to HGSE's Arts in Education Ed.M program and George Washington University's Museum Education MAT program. Gahhhhhh! So glad that you are all going through the nail-biting process too.

Hi, everyone! I'm so glad I found this thread, even if I'm a little bundle of nerves about all things HGSE. I applied to the AIE program!

Hello! I recently discovered the HGSE AIE program: https://www.gse.harvard.edu/academics/masters/aie/ I'm totally fired up about it - it's combining all of my passions into one great opportunity! I don't want to put all of my eggs in one basket, though. Do you all know of any programs like the AIE? I am less interested in teaching art (that's why I like the broadness of the AIE curriculum) and am more interested in the variety of career options that AIE offers - arts administration, community-based options, museums, libraries, and teaching if I reeeally wanted to. For background, I graduated from Swarthmore with a degree in English and Film. I'm doing a museum education internship right now. I'm taking the GRE next month! A few programs I've found that sort of seem like they fit the bill: Education, Culture, and Society - Penn Social Foundations - UVA Any advice? Thanks!
