  1. Or their undergrad English program is SO GOOD that it leads to a TT job.
  2. For what it's worth... I applied to Penn State after conversations with many professors/advisors. From those conversations, Penn State sounds like a very highly regarded program. They all seemed to think it is a program on the rise that will only increase in prestige and reputation.
  3. Congrats to everyone who has made their final decision!!! I am not there yet, but I can't wait for that moment to come! This is really an incredible process. We have gone through so much in the last few months. I am so proud to see everyone's successes on here!
  4. I have a different question about these rankings. I noticed that Bryn Mawr College is ranked #59 in US English PhD programs, above schools like SUNY Binghamton and George Washington, for example. Does Bryn Mawr even have an English PhD program? I can't find it on their website. In the ranked list of English PhD programs, shouldn't universities that HAVE English PhD programs be ranked higher than those that don't?
  5. I am still leaning toward Ohio, yes. But I am very open to both Irvine (if my waitlist were to convert) and Riverside.
  6. Thanks. I am going to take a day or two to think it over and reacquaint myself with their program. In all likelihood though, I am going to remove myself from the list in a few days.
  7. I e-mailed UW asking for a status update since I haven't heard anything. I received a reply that seems automated. It just says my application materials are complete and most applicants will hear in March...
  8. Waitlisted at UF. Will be removing myself from the list. Hope that helps someone out!
  9. FINALLY heard back from Florida. I am "high up on our wait list." I am pretty sure the department thinks someone notified me of this status before today, and that when I was asking about my status, they thought I was asking if there's been movement on the wait list. What a disorganized department.
  10. Still no word from Florida for me. Everyone I talk to keeps telling me Dr. Dobrin will send me an e-mail right away, but he hasn't. This has been going on for THREE weeks now. I've been assured that a decision has been made on my file, but no one will tell me what that decision is. Normally I'd assume it's a rejection, but hints have been given to me that it might not be one. I wonder if I am wait listed? Regardless, there is no way I'd attend at this point. The department seems in complete disarray. I can understand someone taking a day or two to send an e-mail after promising to do so, but THREE WEEKS?! They probably keep such a long wait list because so many students have a bad experience with their office that they decline for programs that are more organized and better run. End of rant.
  11. Katia, I am 99% sure I'll be declining my spot at Rochester. What is your area? Hopefully this helps you out!
  12. My area is 20th-21st C novels, visual culture, media theory, and critical theory.
  13. Congrats! You are wait listed at Ohio State too, right? I have been accepted to both, so (unfortunately) I'll be turning down at least one of them. That could mean some movement for you! Here's hoping! ETA: I meant unfortunately for me because I love both programs and wish I could attend them both!
  14. Congrats on the wait list. I wonder why they won't tell me what is up with my application?!?!
  15. Hmm, I am not sure if I really know what made me a successful applicant to UCR. I felt that I fit in very well with the program's strengths, and there are many professors there who are doing work that aligns with my interest. They also have quite a few groups that fit in well with my interests. They seem like a school that appreciates "innovative" research, so I tried to emphasize that what I am working on is on the "cutting edge." BUT, my field is very different from Renaissance.
  16. As I predicted in another thread, U Washington fell quite a bit.
  17. Never mind! I was somehow getting linked back to the older rankings. Go Stony Brook!
  18. If it meant bringing in money, then yes. No but really, I think (if I remember correctly) they had a spot on the application to click on if you didn't want to be considered for the MA. Who knows though? Maybe you never got your wait list notification or something?
  19. That's cool that you were accepted there and it's where your parents did their graduate work!!! And thanks! UF is strong in my research areas (visual rhetoric/ graphic narratives, trauma studies, and critical theory) - that is why I am still somewhat interested in them. But if I am not accepted, I am not going to worry about it at all. Thanks
