Exactly. I am assuming a rejection from Penn State, but I think it's stupid that someone serious about getting a PhD and a pursuing a career in academia would discount such a great program because of this.

I am wondering about Irvine. Should I count it as an implicit rejection? Or is there still hope?

Hello from another Bostonian! Grew up there and did my undergrad around there. I miss it!

I am interested in 20th-21st C novel, narrative theory (among different media and mixed-media), visual culture, and critical theory. I am leaning heavily toward accepting OSU's offer, but I am going to go to the visiting day first to make sure.

I really think it depends on your situation. I attended an unfunded MA that was very inexpensive, but I had no debt from undergrad. I really wanted to attend this MA program and knew that it would provide a valuable experience. I am much less in debt now than most of my friends who have not gone on to grad school. I learned a lot while doing my MA, and I am very glad I did it. That being said, there is no way I'd attend a PhD program where I'd have to take on more debt. But just think about it, and see if it's right for you.

Told ya! I have not yet made a decision, but at the moment I am not leaning toward Rochester, if that helps.

I've yet to receive anything from Michigan or Penn State as well. So maybe they're just doing it all slowly.

So... should I be worried if I still haven't received anything from the department, other than the phone call acceptance?

Just spent over an hour replying to a POIs e-mail letting me know how interested he is in working with me, and I'm sure I still come off as a babbling idiot. This process does not end with the applications, that's for sure!

I know it's stressful for people on wait lists, but at least one of my programs doesn't have it's visiting weekend until early April. I most likely will not be deciding until after then.

I've never seen the mini series, but I have seen a surprisingly good film adaptation of it.
