And then, out of the blue, I got into Colorado off of their invisible waitlist!  Mind blown.

Well, everyone, we've made it: final days in Purgatory. I hope this week brings good news to all!

I think smellybug's advice template is a great start with whatever additions you need to make to let them know whatever personal experience was meaningful for you. It was rhetorically responsible and professional.
 
I would let them know as quickly as possible as it will maintain what professional contacts you have made throughout the application process.

I'm dying, and have possibly turned into the crabbiest most uninterested composition teacher ever. Sorry, students--it's the grad apps faults that your teacher looks like a crazy person.

Well, after giving myself a couple of days to come down off of cloud nine, I have officially accepted my offer from UT Austin. Hook 'em horns, y'all!

As an alternative perspective, I have been teaching basic writing and reading at a community college for three years now. These students are often the poster children for underpreparedness, and it is this student demographic I will miss the most.
 
Students who come to college without the required skill-level are often very intelligent and thoughtful students who have never been taught how to compose an essay-- for various reasons. Some have learning disabilities that were never diagnosed. Some were placed into lower level English classes because they didn't know English at a young age, and then after they mastered the language, were never moved into a different class. Some had shitty educational experiences that turned them off from writing. The best part of my job has been showing these students just how awesomely capable they are. And they are capable. There is something so rewarding about watching skills develop throughout the semester, watching students discover their inner writer. I freakin' love it. 
 
So, if you get into your first class and see that they are not writing at the level you expected, do not despair. You have an amazing opportunity to be the teacher who shows them that writing isn't a humiliating task-- but an explorative and empowering process. 

Minnnesota's visiting "weekend" starts today.  As a waitlistee, I definitely checked weather.com, hoping to find that the temperature would be sub-zero or that there would be 16" of snow or 30 mph winds.  You know, really just anything to deter prospective students.  Alas, it's just normal-people cold.  In any case, fingers are crossed; we might just see some movement after this weekend.

You are severely underestimating the extent to which I can care about both without neglecting either.

I don't think the level of understanding is quite as pervasive as you think.
Nonetheless, we're still all asked to read the Invisible Knapsack piece despite how we all already know about privilege or whatever (also despite how weird and problematic that piece is). It's a major part of knowing the field.

Just found out I'm in at Temple, which has been a top choice from the beginning! Anyone else here get that news today? Congratulations to everyone on all their recent acceptances!
