What's your area of academic interest?
Therewillbeluke replied to Yetanotherdegree's topic in Religion
Balatro: I think St. Johns would be great honestly. Although it doesn't seem to have a lot of name recognition, I was assured by one of my professors that its pretty well known in Europe among scholars. I mean, if you want to study monasticism why not do it at a monastery? Otherwise, SLU is good because of Beldon Lane, who wrote one of the foundational books on Sacred Space. I'm pretty sure he's at Durham now, but I know that Philip Sheldrake (author of "Spaces for the Sacred") has done summer courses at Boston College, including this past Summer I believe. -

Historical Theology. More specifically Medieval theology/church history and the Franciscans. Yetanotherdegree: Sacred Space rule! One of the many reseaons I'm applying to St. Louis is because of Beldon Lane. -
2013-2014 M.A./M.T.S/M.Div Application chitchat
Therewillbeluke replied to Therewillbeluke's topic in Religion
Yeah, I have, and they have been a great help; but its just one issue after another with mine, very frustrating. Most of it stems from my unfortunate submission during a 4 day period were there was a glitch in the BC system. -

seatbeltblue: Did you have any problems with the BC app? My application has been plagued with technical errors since submission. -

Does anyone know about how long it takes for PTS to send out notifications since they're rolling? My application is "under review." -
Hey all, The Ph.D applicants have had their discussion going for some time, so I figured its about time for the M*s to have some fun. I'm interested in Historical Theology, particularly medieval theology and the Franciscans. I'm applying to: Yale Divinity Princeton Theological Chicago Divinity Harvard Divinity Notre Dame Fordham St. Louis Boston College GTU

newenglandshawn, if you're just looking in the New England area you might want to check out Brown's Religious Studies department. I know Saul Olyan does OT stuff there, but I don't know what other resources they have. Worth checking out.

How many did/will you bring? Any tips on what to bring or what to cut?

Ranking for Theology and Philosophy of Religion
Therewillbeluke replied to Greenwood16's topic in Religion
I think we can help you more if we know more specifically about your interests but here goes: 1) Generally you need a M* before you go into a Ph.D progam (M.A. M.T.S. or M.Div). I Duke has masters level programs in religion/theology and Princeton Theogical Seminary (different from Princeton University) offers an M.Div 2) A M.T.S. is a 2 year degree geared toward academia, while a M.Div is a three year degree ideally meant for those pursuing ministry, incorporating academic theology and ministerial training. Many, however, use M.Divs for doctoral preparation. 3) Not sure about school prestige, I'm sure it helps, but I don't know how much. 4) Language is key, any languages you have are going to help you. Which languages depend on what you want to do. Biblical Studies = Greek/Hebrew, Medieval Theology = Latin. GenerallyFrench and/or German is the norm. A German minor would definitely help in my opinon. -
Contacting POIs for Master's Programs
Therewillbeluke replied to Switching Geertz's topic in Religion
I'm applying for Masters level and have contacted professors, always with a question though, not a general "hi I'm applying and I think you're the COOLEST." Most professors replied to me, some didn't. So I saw do it. -
Hello all, I am trying to discern between Yale's M.Div. and M.A.R. Although I aim to continue on to doctoral studies, I am interested in the M.Div. as well. Should I not bother with the M.Div. is ministery is not my primary goal? Are there many M.Div. applicants whose goal is doctoral studies? Best.

Harvard and Yale Divinity, Fall 2013 Applications
Therewillbeluke replied to unacclimated's topic in Religion
Does anyone have any experience with getting an MDiv after the MAR at Yale (or any other school for that manner)? Is it possible to get the MDiv in less time if you already have the MAR? -
So I recently applied to GTU and listed the Franciscan School of Theology as my first choice for schools to affiliate with with. However, I recently learned thta FST is moving to San Diego and is not accepting students, so I have to change my first choice for schools to affiliate with. I want to study history of christianity/historical theology focusing on the medieval period (Franciscan theology especially) as well as dabble in contemporary theology. If anyone goes to or is familiar with GTU I would appreciate information. I'm currently looking at the SFTS, CDSP, and DSPT.

Harvard and Yale Divinity, Fall 2013 Applications
Therewillbeluke replied to unacclimated's topic in Religion
Hey, I'm applying for the Yale's M.A.R. concentrated program in History of Christianity. I'd like to pursue a PhD (typical), but I'm open to other possibilities (namely switching into the M.div program) depending on how things play out. -
Trying to decide between Theology and History of Christianity. Interested in Franciscan theology, mysticism, creation, and some contemporary figures like Tillich.
-
Hey, I'm not a YDS student, but I am applying this season. What concentration are you looking at?
-
Virmundi, I have looked at St. Bonaventure, but its only during the summer and I'd rather have a focus beyond a degree in Franciscan studies.
-
Thanks all, I definitely want to puruse history at SLU, Fordham, or Chicago. Yale, Notre Dame, and Boston are the one's I'm up in the air about if anyone has info on these programs.
-
Thanks for the info guys, I'm interested in the medieval period, particularly monasticism, church reform, and Franciscan theology. However I am also interested in issues such as creation/ecological theology and post-modern theology, which leads me to consider theology rather than history. In short, I am deeply interested in history, but I am interested in more than reconstruction the past, I also want to be able to link the issues of the past to contemporary/trans-historical issues. I guess I'm really just looking to do Historical Theology. Thank jdmhotness for the info on St. Johns.

Hey all, I'm applied to a few M* level programs and am trying to decide between applying with a concentration in History of Christianity or in Theology. I am a double major in Religion and History, which leads me to want to try to blend the two disciplines by pursuing the History track. However I feel as if Theology would give me more room to maneuver in my studies. Any thoughts? P.S. The programs I'm considering are Chicago, Yale Divinity, Saint Louis, Fordham, Notre Dame, Boston College, and St. John's School of Theology/Seminary
