MLA style requires you to use TNR or a similarly standard font. So for Microsoft Office, your choices are basically TNR or Cambria (the new default). If you're applying to PhD programs in the discipline, you need to demonstrate your mastery of MLA style (hence you can't use Calibri or any other non-standard MLA font regardless of your aesthetic preferences).

as a 30-year-old, i have a career under my belt—one that effectively uses an english degree without being a teaching position. as such, i'm prepared to actually mentor future students (something i wouldn't feel capable of doing had i never been out of school before), & i'm also well situated to edit &/or launch an academic journal, which makes me more marketable than if i lacked significant editorial experience. so i feel great about my employment prospects, thanks

On another note, I officially signed up for classes this morning! I will be taking Digital Rhetoric, Engendering Rhetorical Power, and Approaches to College Composition, in addition to ASL classes at Gallaudet. To say I'm excited is an understatement!

There's a bizarre idea in this thread that popular culture has no aesthetic value...or that people, academics included, get no aesthetic pleasure from reading popular fiction, for example. 

Java-- Don't worry too much about GREs. You may want to retake them, however, because a lot of other schools won't even consider you at some levels. Our department cares much less about those than other aspects of the app. You should contact a professor you're looking to work with, rather than DGS (Tobias)--so maybe Heidi Brayman Hackel, if you're into Renaissance. The biggest thing is to focus on your writing sample. And in the end, it seems it really comes down to finding people who are innovative, resourceful and can benefit from the faculty. There are people with very high GREs that get rejected, and many with lower GREs that are not, but I think our program is not the norm.
