  1. Mary: have you decided yet where you will be attending?
  2. I have no info, but I feel your pain - I was waitlisted at my favorite school too!
  3. I'm probably attending the one where I didn't like the city! I visited a bunch of places and unfortunately was waitlisted at my favorite. The city I didn't like has the school which is the best academically + is offering me full funding, plus it's the best research fit.
  4. Yes, wait until it's 100% chance for sure!
  5. That's not unfriendly, most graduate programs actually kick you out if you earn lower than a B average.
  6. This isn't for graduate school, though? Most graduate school offices work with their students to establish in-state tuition. I have never heard of any state school that didn't do that. You have to follow some guidelines, of course, but it should work if you are employed by the university (assistantship). In fact, some schools tell you if you DON'T establish residency after 1 year you'll be on the hook for the out of state tuition instead of them!
  7. Yes, qualifying as "in-state" takes a full year, and you do have to switch driver's license, voter ID, pay state taxes, etc. Most schools have an office devoted to helping you do that. In addition, as a student you usually have to be able to show proof that you stayed in the state during breaks. I think you are allowed to have 2-3 weeks outside the state for the year and that's it. I know California is especially strict about this, not sure about other "less desirable" (for tuition purposes) states.
  8. Congrats! I personally would choose the money... if I can get a free ride why would I choose to be in debt? I know it's a tough decision, though.
  9. I was going to say forget it, but 10 months is not so long. Is the commute 2 hours round trip or 2 hours each way?
  10. I would take the funding. Since both achieve the same end (working as a school psychologist) then it doesn't seem worth being $50,000 in debt. That's one year (or more) salary! I know MSU is offering a better education, and that as educators that's a tough thing to pass up! But at the end of the day I have to say that being debt-free would win for me.

    Columbus, OH

There's nothing wrong with living south of Lane in UA. It's generally not very affordable, but there are some apartments in the area that are nice and kind of hidden away. On/between Arlington Ave and Coventry Road.
  12. I have a request! We have talked about it before, but can we please discuss (in a non-biased way please) the importance or unimportance of attending an accredited PhD program? We could do it for EdS too, I suppose, but that seems more cut-and-dry. I would love to discuss the effect a non-accredited program has on the following career options (after a doctorate in SP has been attained): Working in K-12 schools or districts Working in hospitals/public health settings Becoming a professor (academia) Private practice Other (aka whatever I missed!) "Accredited = good, non-accredited = bad" is what I have in my head, but why? I realized I don't know the actual barriers that come with graduating from a non-accredited PhD (or PsyD) program? One of the schools I was accepted to is not accredited for PhD but has a 100% paid employment rate. So where's the catch? We can also discuss NASP vs. APA if people want to.
  13. If you really want to tell absolutely everyone in your phone contacts (although I'm not sure why you would) you can send a mass text.
  14. Some days I think all I do is report spam bots on this site...

you're the hero the forums deserve, but.. actually, yeah, we also need you right now. ;p

  15. What makes you think UBC is a smaller school? It actually has about 10,000 more students than U of T. I also don't know why you think UBC (as a school) has a worse/less well-known reputation? It has just as much name recognition as U of T. UBC, U of T and McGill consistently battle for the top 3 spots in Canada and all have a stellar international reputation. That being said, your post makes it sound like U of T is your actual preference. It sounds as though that's where your heart is and you are really just looking for someone to tell you it's the right choice! Anyway, it's a tough call -- good luck!

    Purdue?

I am totally crashing this thread to say that (if you haven't visited it) Purdue's philosophy department is really gorgeous! It's on the 7th floor and they have an amazig circular meeting/classroom from which you can see all of campus. It almost made me want to switch my degree program. Good luck, all!
  17. You can do it, there's nothing wrong with it. You can also ask when you will get the result... it's a sneaky way of trying to get them to offer to tell you right there and then.
  18. Sure, but grads and alums aren't likely to be hanging around on these boards. You should contact the school and have them put you in contact with the right people!
  19. I am. But it's a little risky to me too. I am considering them because 1) their EdS program is already accredited, and 2) they will get their accreditation by my 2nd year. I'd rather go to the non-accredited program, but am thinking I should play it safe and go to the doubly-accredited one I was accepted to (with funding) instead. My thinking is (academically) I would never regret going to the doubly-accredited program, but I might have plenty of chances to regret going to the non-accredited one!
  20. Was it personalized? If no, you don't need to bother replying. If it was, you can just say, thank you and that you are excited about the offer but are waiting to hear from all schools before you make a decision.
  21. There is a centralized place to view offers and rejections on THIS site! The Results Search. Just type in the school + department name.
  22. UNC is a more fun place to live, but it will be easier to live in Columbus on that stipend (higher stipend + lower cost of living). I have no idea about the UNC area, but I am from Cbus, so I can shed more light on that. The econ department in general is very highly regarded (not sure it matters that you're not technically econ) and practically the entire state of Ohio is agriculture/farmland based, so on the very little knowledge I have about this plus what you have outlined here... I would choose OSU. And that's from someone who lived in Columbus, is considering UNC for grad school (and has visited) and KNOWS that Chapel Hill is more fun!
  23. Sure, there's still a chance, but asking for people who tell you to be patient to do something extra for you is a good way to get rejected!
  24. Uh, no? He obviously didn't want you to contact him so why would you ask him for that huge favor?
  25. What I suggest is that you pay the deposit for your top-choice U.S. program. The one you would be happy to attend if you were rejected from Oxbridge. Then if you are accepted with funding to a UK institution and change your mind, so be it. Not exactly ethical, but it doesn't really seem like you have another choice.
