  1. Ah, I'm guessing you are the UVA entry for Applied Developmental Science? Congrats! I didn't hear from them at all, which was a blow considering I already have a Master's degree! I know I'm a tad late, but I would give you two pieces of advice: 1. Just say you want to be considered, then see what your options are after you get a definitive response (admitted or not to MA program). That way you get to make a choice after knowing all your options. 2. Do you have any other offers for a PhD? Because if you do (and they're funded) you should probably take them. I know it sucks not being able to go to your top program (of my top 2 one doesn't give good funding - a dealbreaker for me, and the other waitlisted me) but IMO it's not worth the risk of doing an MA - especially if unpaid - and not having any guarantee for continuing for a PhD. Plus, if your MA school ultimately didn't take you on, you'd probably have to repeat a bunch of courses for your eventual PhD, which would be a huge bummer!
  2. Well what is important to you? I don't know anything about Biology, but I would start thinking about the following things: 1. Funding - Do they all guarantee full funding? This can be a real issue for international students especially. Also check to make sure that you can you live on the stipend they give you. 2. Reputation of program - which is ranked higher? Which school has graduates who succeed in careers that match your own interests? 3. Research fit/interests - where can you do exactly what you want to do with your research? 4. Mentors - who will be the best mentor? Who will actually help you learn instead of being a big name whom you never get to see? 5. Time it takes to complete the program - is one three or four years while another is seven? Also look at graduation rates, some programs say it takes 5 years to complete their program, but the average graduation rate is more like 6 or 7. 6. Location and cost of living - do you like one of these cities more than the others? Is one less expensive to live in, will your money go farther? Do you know people who live or go to school there who can be a good connection to keep you happy and not homesick?
  3. Depends on how devoted you are to your car, I guess. It might actually be cheaper to use a moving company and buy a car once you're out there!
  4. I was also asked (for a PhD program, but sure it applies to EdS as well) "What is the most important issue in SP right now?"
  5. This accreditation thing is bugging me, too. I am expecting offers from two programs that don't seem to be APA or NASP accredited. In both cases the school's EdS level is accredited, and the PhD level is not. One told me they are a new program and will be up for accreditation in 2015, the other didn't mention it at all. Does anyone have thoughts on this?
  6. Is it at least NASP accredited? And why an EdS before a PhD, may I ask?
  7. Was told I would get a response today, but it is 4pm there. Too late to hope?

  8. I am currently trying for the 100th time to explain to my mom how 1) school counselors and school psychologists are different, and 2) how with a PhD I probably would not even work as a school psychologist (difference between PhD and EdS). I wonder how many times I will have to go through this?
  9. This is odd. Have they admitted anyone? They may want to admit you, but would like to see what the rest of the applicant pool is like first. Why do you have to make a decision in one week? You should have until April 15. If you don't, I would try telling the waitlisted school that.
  10. Don't just feel sorry for yourself and coast til next application season. To maintain confidence you have to work to improve your application, even in small ways. so that you know that you are a strong(er) applicant by next fall.
  11. You posted in the wrong forum! Go here and post again and you should get better responses. Good luck!
  12. No, not if the deadline has passed, and definitely not necessary for Master's at all.
  13. Finally DONE! 7 interviews in 10 days!

    1. sarab

      sarab

      Wow, impressive! Good luck!

  14. I interviewed with a program today that told me to let them know ASAP if any other program tried to make me do this. They said it is highly unethical, and that I should have until April 15 to decide. So I would first try contacting Aurora and explain the situation (you are excited about this opportunity, but don't want to make a final decision without hearing back from all schools, your other schools have an April 15 deadline, "isn't that standard?"). If they still insist on the 30 days I would contact the other programs you applied to and let them know the situation.
  15. This is true, do not expect any help from them, although there are frequently departmental scholarships which will give you tuition toward a few classes. I would have assumed, however, given the other schools to which you applied, that funding was not a big deal? The other two aren't exactly known for funding either. Still, if you can get it, I advocate going where the money is!!
  16. BAD NEWS, all. NASP conference is next week! Meaning that if we don't hear anything from schools by Friday (maybe Monday?) we probably won't hear for an additional week or two because no one is making decisions while out at the conference! Looks like March or the week directly before will probably be the earliest. I had an interview this morning which said I wouldn't hear until mid-March because of NASP!
  17. I think you should ask to be in contact with a graduate student. It's a fair enough request, after all, they're living the life you are planning to. Plus, you can ask them some of the more sensitive questions (e.g. funding). Most places are happy to give you the info for a current student. As for your question about academia, I think it is a fair one. If you are really worried about asking, or if the program is pretty much known for only producing academicians, you can preface it by saying, "Right now I believe I am interested in pursuing a career in academia, however, I want to keep my options open. Can you tell me if your program supports students who choose an alternative career path?" and go from there.
  18. I'm a bit confused by your title, you say MSW vs. MFT but you just mentioned MSW in your post? Anyway, I went to USF and really can not say enough good things about it! PM me know if you have any questions about it. Also, I also looked at USC MSW and think that there is no way it's worth the price tag!
  19. I think 2 weeks is an appropriate time to check-in and ask when you can expect to be notified. Was a timeline something they gave you in the interview? Most schools I interviewed with told me that they make a decision within one week. eta: also, have you looked on the results search to see how long after the interview decisions took to be made in past years?
  20. The Sorbonne has an excellent one. Most universities have one, but La Sorbonne is the best program and university, plus Paris is the most fun city (IMO). Other places will be cheaper, and can most likely be found in any big city. Lyon, Rouen, Grenoble, Annecy, Pau, etc. Lyon is the second biggest city in France, so prices should be about comparable to Paris. Just a note: you should be aware that most of these programs are COMBINED language + culture. The French take pride in both and they like to teach it to foreigners. It will be difficult to find a program that separates the two. This is not a bad thing, and does not mean that the quality of the course will be poorer. Also, I suppose you could look at programs in Quebec, if all/most of what you're looking for is reading + writing proficiency. You'll come back with an atrocious accent, though.
  21. For the record, I was prepared to answer that question at my interviews, and not one (out of five) asked. Also, I met a girl at one interview who was in the same boat as you - applied to about 12 programs and only got the one interview. She was accepted there and will be attending! So all hope is not lost.
  22. Yes, that's typical. Just ask someone to lock it in an office for you.
  23. These numbers are based on what the programs told me they were going to take. Offers have been extended at this point, but I am not 100% sure they stuck to these exact numbers. Purdue University PhD Counseling Psychology 30 interviewed (25 in-person, 5 Skype) 6 accepted (target) University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee PhD School Psychology 14 (11 in-person, 3 Skype) 4 accepted (target)
  24. You can also do a collared shirt + jacket with no tie. It looks nice and isn't overdressed.
  25. Okay guys, PHEW. I can finally take a breath! I was just gone for a week doing interviews, and I got back yesterday. This morning I had 2 phone interviews and received 2 admissions decisions! One was a waitlist to my (new) top-choice program (so much ) and the other was an acceptance! Does anyone have tips for what to say to a professor who emails you an acceptance? I am not ready to make a decision! How do I sound enthusiastic and polite, but non-commital? Just that then I'm ready to relax for a few days!
