  1. I was invited to interview at the school that misplaced part of my application. In the original email I received after I inquired about my application status, the professor said there was a question if I was "the right fit" for the program. My SO said at the time that maybe they were just trying to cover for their mistake in overlooking me by pretending I was also a bad fit. But they sent me an invitation today anyway! Now that I have the invitation I am wondering if there's even a point? Do I even stand a chance if they really think I'm a bad fit? The interview is also in one week's time, so that's very little time to prepare!! Is this futile?
  2. There are a lot of past threads that deal with this! I'm probably going to wear dress pants and a cashmere cardigan over a button-down shirt. None of my interviews are more than one day, so luckily I don't have to plan too much variety!
  3. Hello ladies (I assume), I have a pretty good idea of what to wear to interviews, and I have looked over some of the past topics in this forum regarding the subject. However, the one thing that is stumping me is the shoes! Pretty much all of my interviews are taking place in cities with very cold climates, where it is more than likely there will be quite a bit of snow on the ground (Iowa, Boston, Denver...) I have perfect interview shoes - leather booties - but they will be ruined by snow or wet weather. I have been warned that all these interviews include a campus tour with a substantial amount of walking. So what do I wear? I have riding boots that can stand up to the weather, but I can't wear them with slacks. Any advice?
  4. It could mean they actually think you are a better fit for that program, but that most of the other people they are referring to applied for the M.S. Or they could have gotten you mixed up! I would email them right away, saying that you applied for the PhD program and asking if the email was meant for you. The only school that has accepted me so far wrote me TWICE saying, "Thanks for applying for a MA in Teaching!" when I was applying to a PhD in School Psychology! It freaked me out a lot, but just goes to show that some places can make mistakes.
  5. Counseling Psychology (in the School of Educational Studies NOT the Psychology department!) I heard from them on January 10, and the interview date is February 7.
  6. There's no certainly no reason for your finacee to get a PsyD. If she wants a doctorate she is much better off with a PhD, as those are funded and PsyDs are not. That being said, it sounds as though there is no reason for her to pursue a doctorate at all. 1. I am applying to PhDs and I do want a different career path. I do want to do research, and after graduation I am considering a career at the district level (Director of Pupil Services) or a non-profit or even academia. Also, a PhD (plus the required hours) allows one to practice as a licensed psychologist (i.e. therapy). 2. EdS is an Education Specialist degree. It is, as far as I know, what is required to be a school psychologist in most states. More on that vs an MS below. 3. No, I have not. I would tell your fiancee to read this document very carefully. You can run into problems with just an MS. Quote: "Certification as a school psychologist typically requires a minimum of a specialist - level degree (i.e., master’s of 60 credits or more)." And "Employment opportunities may be significantly limited to states that accept 'psychometrists' or school psychologists that graduated from programs of less than 60 semester credits."
  7. If you go back in this thread you can see the advice and resources given! Check out posts #108 & #109.
  8. I applied last year and acceptances and rejections alike didn't come in until the 3rd week in March!
  9. It sounds like an interview, but with a high chance of you getting in. I would treat it has though you have not yet be admitted, show enthusiasm and re-establish your interest in the topics that she thinks are compatible with hers. It really does sound as though they have pretty much made up their minds, but remember it could be down to you and even one other person, which still makes it a bit competitive! You had also better figure out where this school is on your list. It sounds as though if they nominate you for a fellowship and you don't end up going you could have just cheated someone else out of funding! So if it's not in your top choices, you'd better let them know!
  10. Some schools tell you that they take 2 weeks or so to update the website. I really wouldn't worry yet, especially if the woman you spoke to told you not to. Maybe call back at the one month mark if nothing has changed.
  11. One of those was me!
  12. This happened to me for UNC, I was invited to an "Admitted Students Day" instead of an interview. The professor who called me told me that they find it to be more equitable - that way students who can not afford to fly out, or are restricted in their ability to come for other reasons, are not at a disadvantage.
  13. Argh, two weeks ago I called a school which said they were missing my undergrad transcript to confirm that I had sent it in November(!) The lady said, "oh we have it right here, I'm not sure why the department says it is missing." Long story short, the committee sent out interview invites before my file was "complete" (again, their fault) and when I wrote to inquire said that I was on the waitlist for interview because my file was incomplete when the committee met! I feel like this is so unfair, I mean, I had everything in early, and they couldn't keep their stuff straight. Honestly though, every single interaction I have had with this school has been negative, starting from the time I wrote a potential POI and he just replied "No" (that's it)! So maybe I should just cut my losses. Still, the app fee was almost $100 which makes me so angry!
  14. Just chanced to read right after I responded to you. If the entire Psych department at NYU has the same open house day, it looks as though it will not conflict with your interview the 28th!
  15. You could call or email NYU and ask when their interview date is and when they are sending invitations. I did that for a few schools and they were perfectly friendly about it. Also, the invitation you already received should include an "RSVP by" date. February 28 is quite a ways away, I think you have time before you have to respond!
  16. I got a letter today from a school! Then I was wondering why Gmail wouldn't let me reply. hah.
  17. My very last notification was actually an acceptance... but all of the programs I heard from released acceptances and rejections within the same week.
  18. If I'm not mistaken you can enter Speech Pathology programs as an undergrad! I know someone who is doing so at Marquette. Just a tip!
  19. I must admit, I was a little nervous when I heard about it, as I am interviewing at Purdue next month. But logically I know that these things can and have happened other places too. Including at least one other school at which I am interviewing, so... no. It doesn't really affect my decision.
  20. Last year I applied for 4 PhD programs in Education (and mostly struck out...). Anyway, I learned that they get back late. I mean REALLY late compared to most fields. I was hearing back end of March beginning of April. I think I heard back from my last one around April 13! Lots of disciplines (especially Psychology) have an interview stage that Ed PhDs do not have. That's why the process seems to be happening so much quicker for them. So hang in there and good luck!
  21. Am I the only one who didn't hear back from Northern Colorado today? I turned in a different SoP for them than for the others (they had a 500 word limit!) so I didn't get to talk about my research experience, etc. and that is making me nervous!
  22. Was the person who posted in the same discipline as you? If no, just forget it outright. It really doesn't matter. You can't compare apples and oranges! If they are the same discipline, then fear not! It could just be that acceptances are going out over a longer period of time.
  23. Exactly what monochrome said. Submit both! The other thing is that you have 9 or 10 more months before you apply if you are planning to apply for Fall 2015. You could always take it again if you really wanted to. But really, lots of Master's programs don't even ask for GRE scores. Mine didn't!
  24. This happened to me. One of my recommenders was a month late. I reminded her to turn it in and everything turned out ok!
  25. The same thing happened to me. I had to write to the recommender and remind her of the deadlines. It was really nerve-wracking! I would write to the school(s) and apologize, then write to the person ASAP to tell them they're still missing it!
