  1. If I am not mistaken, in order to be eligible to practice privately as a psychologist (no matter what kind) you need a minimum of a doctoral degree (PhD, PsyD). As for an LCSW, by the time you have gotten your MSW it will take the same amount of work/time to become certified as it would have if you got your PhD. Plus, a MSW will skew you in an area of specialty that you may not want (no idea of your interests, but MSW tends to certify you for work with demographics, and those are typically not the people who are able to pay to come to your private practice)! There are programs which, if you already have a Master's in School Psych, will allow you to graduate in as little as three years. Take UNC Chapel Hill, for example. If you are motivated you can take only three years. That's the same as a LCSW and you will probably be in an area that you enjoy more. Plus, you are more likely to have the program/internship paid for. Do you have an advisor you can talk to? Come talk to the folks on the if you want!
  2. Do you know if that just for clinical, or for all psych programs @UNC?
  3. Purdue is February 7, I believe and invites should go out in the next few weeks. This is for Counseling Psych, but I suspect other programs will be the same/similar.
  4. Gotta agree with the above poster. Last year I had an interview with a POI that went great. She said she would have me, but had to get it past the committee (she had very divergent research interests from the rest of the department). I never met with the rest of the department and in the end I was rejected. Not saying that it will happen to you, but it is a possibility. If you get invited to interview weekend I would make sure to really connect with the other faculty! Make a real effort to show them why you would be a good student for the department overall. That being said, if things don't end up going well, it might be for the best. The prof I met with warned me that I would have to fight for funding after my first year and might end up miserable.
  5. Mini-rant coming... I'm just so frustrated and don't know who else to vent to! I applied to 10 universities, all of which had a deadline of 1/1 at the latest. Out of those 10, guess how many have me listed as having a "complete" application? Two! Part of the problem (which probably gave me an ulcer) was one of my letter writers not turning in seven of her letters before going on vacation without internet access. I completely understand that she is busy and that I am low on her list of priorities, it's just that it's so frustrating to think that your application might not be read because of something that's out of your control. But a lot of the problem was with the schools themselves. Almost every school I applied to seems to be missing either one of my two transcripts, or my GRE scores. All of which I sent in early November. So I have called and emailed admissions offices about this, just to find out that they miraculously find the missing piece after I contact them! Today a woman told me, "I have it right here, I'm not sure why the department hasn't seen it!" Argh! I'm just frustrated that it takes such effort, and that all this is coming after the deadline, so it looks as though I'm not prepared, or -- worse case scenario -- I won't be considered by committees at all because of silly oversights or errors. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm just sitting here, sick and half delirious, hoping to get interview requests and realizing that that can't happen because schools haven't even seen my files yet (if they ever will). There needs to be a more depressed emoticon than just the sad face. (Because this post was depressing, I totally want to hear HAPPY news! If you received an interview invitation or something else positive, you should post about it so I can live vicariously through you .)
  6. Same, shoot. I didn't even think about it!
  7. There's nothing wrong with going under the word limit as long as you have gotten all your points across (and done it well)!
  8. I think mine were 1.5 I thought it made them look more neat. Only one school specified for me, the rest were word limits, so it didn't really seem like it mattered much.
  9. Tips for your applications: There is no "Uni. of Ohio". It's Ohio State University (OSU) or Ohio University (OU). New Hampshire is spelled "Hampshire". Amherst is "Amherst" I know you're an international student. Just make sure you get them spelled/named correctly on your applications! You don't want one small mistake to mess everything up!
  10. Congrats! That's great news.
  11. If the deadline is tomorrow you're still fine!
  12. Prof didn't send her letter in to half my schools and is now on vacation without internet. Can't believe it... all that time and $ down the drain.

One of my letter writers sent her LOR in a month late. Find a new writer ASAP and explain the situation to them. Call up the school/program and let them know what the circumstances are. Most of them will need to know the name of the new letter writer so they can verify or use the process or whatever.

Thanks everyone! She's back now, so I'm hoping since it was the holidays and most people were gone some committees will be more lenient. :\ fingers crossed!

      SHE DID THEM TODAY!!!

  13. Speaking from experience with another department at Cal (a caveat that not all work this way, but this letter suggests yours might...) the interview/visit is for people who are already in AS LONG AS they don't eff up at the visit. If you get along with/be nice to professors and definitely the current grad students - they have tons of sway - and you'll be fine. Congrats!
  14. Maybe... I am literally at the airport right now leaving the country myself. This is such a nightmare.
  15. Thanks! I'm from Columbus, so if you need info on OSU just let me know! I just got word that one of my profs missed FIVE deadlines - including USU and UWM - and is now out of the country without email... so I am guessing I won't end up at either.
  16. A professor writing one of my LORs missed FIVE of my deadlines. I sent her an email and got an auto-response saying she is out of the country until December 31 and will have very limited email access! These are literally half the schools on my list, including my top 2-3 picks! What should I do? Especially since one of them is a hard copy letter! If she didn't already mail it she won't be able to until January 1 at the absolute earliest. Both other letters have been submitted on time to all schools (as far as I know).
  17. This has happened to almost every school I applied to. Just tell them you already sent it and the date on which you sent it and they magically find the materials. It really sucks, but with so many people sending them things (and probably messing up - e.g. sending to the graduate school instead of the department and vice versa) the reality is that things get misplaced.
  18. You might want to also post this on the general "interviews" forum as I know this kind of thing comes up often. I would call the other school and tell them you are very interested, but have a conflict with the reception time and you really hope that it won't influence your application because you are VERY interested, etc. If these schools are only 2.5 hours apart I wouldn't be suprised if they're competitors - it doesn't really seem like a plausible "oversight". :\ Also, when were your application deadlines that you have already heard back about interviews?! I'm so envious!
  19. Good luck! I just finished my last ones yesterday since they're due December 15! But EdS programs seem to be later than PhD deadlines.
  20. Thank goodness! I thought this was just me! I am glad to hear someone else is experiencing this too. It makes me think that it is a bug that should get fixed pretty soon.
  21. How are everyone's applications going? Is anyone done? I'm just about halfway though, but I got 3 out today so I feel like I'm on a roll! Is anyone else sad that they have to wait to hear back for a few more months? It's ridiculous, I am already impatient to hear back from places I haven't even ubmitted the application yet! Totally crazy.
  22. For questions about when you might hear back from programs, go ahead and use the "Results Search" at the top of this page.
  23. There are plenty of results inth Results Search: http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=public+health+unc
  24. This one specifically is Social, although I believe other programs in the department do it as well.
