  1. For future applicants and wonderers: Received official rejection today (4/12), by "real" mail, to current address. Best of luck to official recipients!
  2. Just received email: Japan, Full, Alternate. Congratulations you two! And you too, mfih, alternate is not a "no"...
  3. Thanks for your bold move, whoopsie. It is nice to know that the JF isn't completely impossible (since I already assumed I had been rejected). (one more thing to worry about now...)
  4. As per Biz's observation about the process, it seems that after each country's Fulbright commission has made their decision, this information gets sent back to the Fulbright Foreign Scholar Board for a final OK. It's not clear whether they would actually make a decision about accepting or rejecting an applicant at this point, or if it is just part of the bureaucracy? For more info about the FSB: http://fulbright.state.gov/fsb.html
  5. Ah, that makes sense. Thanks again, mfih!
  6. Hmm... It's apparent that I didn't get this, but I wonder why I haven't at least received a rejection, as their website says "by the end of March"? Anyone else receive an official rejection yet?
  7. Hello again MFIH, nice to see you over here, too. I think you're right, the delayed response from Japan last year was completely understandable. For every other year that appears on the spreadsheets here, the notifications were in March. So maybe in the next few days????
  8. For the sake of future applicants who are wondering about notification dates... Just received a rejection by email (3/27): We regret that we cannot offer you a Mellon Fellowship for Dissertation Research in the Humanities in Original Sources this year. Your application was one of 497 from which we could select only 17 for awards. Due to the volume of applications reviewed we are unable to provide feedback regarding individual applications, but it was a very competitive pool and our selection committee made its final choices only with great difficulty.
  9. Ha! Earlier I suggested that one of you numbers experts see if you could estimate the day of the week that we might be notified. I thought I'd just take a look myself, and looked at the Germany TA dates (since there are so many of you here), and found that: In 2007-2008 notification was on Wednesday In 2008-2009 notification was on Friday In 2009-2010 notification was on Thursday In 2010-2011 notification was on Tuesday and In 2011-2012 notification was on Monday. Good thing that my research doesn't depend on any numerical predictions...
  10. Hello MFIH, Thank you so much for taking the time to let me know about your notification. And, おめでとうございます! (should have said this before, sorry).
  11. Oh! When did you hear this, and how did you find out?
  12. Hey! Can't one of you nerdy number-crunchers figure out what days of the week we are most likely to receive our notifications????????? (no offence intended to any of the hard-working number-crunchers here, of course)
  13. I'm thinking that acceptance would come from the FSB and rejection would come from IIE... In most cases, you're not getting anything from the host country because they aren't the "final word."
  14. It isn't clear to me exactly what you have been offered (for example, what does "the total support offered to me has been calculated by SUMMING the in-state and out-of state tuition exemptions" mean?). But I agree with Biz, it sounds as though you will be responsible for paying 50% of the in-state tuition. However, in case this wasn't spelled out in your offer, there is a difference between "tuition" and "fees." There are "fees" that are the same whether you are in-state or out-of state; these are things like health center fees, and probably the engineering fee you mention. So there would certainly be students required to pay in-state FEES and out-of-state TUITION...
  15. I don't believe that you can get residency. In order to get residency, you have to be able to prove that you have lived in Indiana for at least one year for purposes OTHER than education. That means that your first year at school doesn't do anything to help you attain residency. You might check here: http://www.indiana.e.../resiinfo.shtml
  16. This didn't draw any responses last year... Any takers this year?
  17. OK. For the sake of future sufferers underrepresented here, I will put myself in the mix, if the Great Spreadsheet Updater doesn't mind adding me in: Recommended, Full, Japan. Here's hoping that we all receive news sooner rather than later.
  18. Just wondering, have you already checked to see if you can get loans for overseas study? All of the DOE loans, like Stafford, seem to only be available if one is attending a university in the US. As far as fellowship applications go, it's likely you've passed all of the deadlines. You say that you've looked at the UCL website but have you actually contacted their financial aid (or whatever it's called there) office? The people in those offices are usually very helpful and may be able to point you towards some funding...
  19. Although policies are different at different schools, it is likely that you can take out loans in addition to your other aid, depending on the total amount of your aid package. You should be able to find this out through your school's financial aid office, take a look at their website or give them a call. However, it seems that your question may be if you can get loans in advance (maybe over the Summer), to help you get there and get set up? If so, the answer is probably no. It is very unlikely that any school will disburse funds to you sooner than a few weeks before the Fall semester starts.
  20. Unfortunately, I think you're probably right, judehermes. Looks like I didn't either. For goodness' sake, aren't there any lurkers who have already heard back about this? Please let us know so that we can stop thinking about it!
  21. Hello CLIR people, I just noticed this: http://academicjobs....owships_2012-13 I think this is the source you referred to earlier, Darus? According to this (who knows how accurate), they let you know the results in time for you to accept or decline by April 2, when they make their formal announcement of recipients. I hope they wouldn't really be expecting such a quick response...I'm still waiting to hear about Fulbright, results of which are very likely to come AFTER April 2...I'm sure many of you are waiting to get other results, too... Actually, when you think about it, it makes sense that they would let the people who ARE receiving the awards know first. Because if the people who are awarded say "no," then their spot may get passed on to the people lower on the list, who will then no longer get rejections. (Sorry, I didn't express that very clearly)
  22. Hmm...on the application it says April 2 is the notification date. (Nice that one fellowship at least commits to a date instead of torturing us). Is there something I don't know???
  23. One thing worth considering is that not getting a funding offer for the first year does not equal no funding whatsoever. I was admitted to an MA program in a prestigious school with no funding; however, after taking out loans for the first year, I was fully funded for the following years. Not sure if this is an unusual scenario, but it worked out well for me.
  24. This is only an observation from my experience at UCSB: Perhaps you don't want to consider student loans, but you will be eligible for loans with this stipend. For example: If you look at the Student Financial Aid page, you'll see what they call the "Annual Budget." I haven't checked lately, but it's around $36,000 a year for a grad living off campus. You are eligible for subsidized loans to make up the difference between your aid and the "Annual Budget." So if you are getting your tuition and fees paid ($13,000 or so), and getting a stipend of $17,000, you can get loans for around $6,000. It is also possible to increase your budget for various reasons; for example, if you have to commute you can increase the transportation portion of your budget and therefore increase your loan eligibility. This isn't a huge increase in funds but it's enough to make a difference!
  25. Hello, sorry to revisit this question but: Is the deadline for accepting or refusing offers April 15th at midnight in the school's location? Or, is it April 15th at 5PM in the school's location? Any consensus on this? I'm a bit concerned (still waiting for more information). Thank you!
