There's another Buffalo acceptance on the board, it seems to be from a while ago. -

Yeah, I assume you're right. Even if they met today and made decisions, it is unlikely that the people in the office would get around to sending them out until tomorrow. That said, a lot of people have gotten admits on Mondays in the past.... -

Also... Duke, Stanford, U of Chicago, Notre Dame, Penn State, University of Georgia, Wayne State, SUNY Stony Brook, Michigan State, Maryland, Illinois at Urbana, and a couple others (just going by last year... although some of those do stretch into the weekend date-wise). Anyway, it should be a busy week--I'm surprised that we didn't hear more today. -

Well, there is always a possibility that they pushed their schedule up. Sounds like you have insider information. Everyone go back to stressing. =) -
Fall 2013 English Lit Applicants

Yeah, I got it. I just decided to respond literally for whatever reason (I was in a kind of anti-stressing-about-schools-that-are-unlikely-to-respond-soon sort of mood). Anyway, today has been kind of dead in terms of news.... -

Nah, they're completely different departments.... with completely different schedules/readers/etc. -

I think you have another two weeks-ish until Madison replies. I don't think they've ever replied before the 9th. (last year they replied on the 9th... and in prior years they've replied on the 13th, 14th, 11th, etc.). -

Also: You're going to be spending the next 5 years of your life in whatever program you're accepted to. Applying to more programs might mean the difference between 20k with a 1/1 teaching load (and possibly several years on fellowship) and 10k with a 2/2 teaching load (in which you're lucky to teach anything besides composition). I guess those are at opposite ends of the spectrum, but both possibilities exist in terms of funding. Really, when you think about that, what is an extra thousand dollars now. -

There isn't going to be any news until around when schools start to reply. Nothing is going to pop up until then (reject or admit). I'd suggest putting a date to start looking in your planner, and then start working on a project of some sort to keep yourself distracted. -

Well, if you know they don't respond until April... you don't have anything to worry about until then. -
Program Specific Questions - Fall 2013
bluecheese replied to bfat's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
You're probably better off aiming for funded programs -- and then trying to get things like a higher stipend, summer funding, etc. out of the fact that you already have funding secured (you can also mention that on many applications... there is usually a spot to enter grants/funding already obtained). -

Maybe OSU cycles through a lot of applications and holds a bunch in reserve just in case? -

I'm sure they had a reading round (possibly done by graduate students, but not necessarily) and cut a large portion of the applicants. You must have made it past that stage -- so, that's positive! -

That sounds entirely plausible given that there are a bunch of rejections up already. That said, I suspect that Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy have a separate application pool than the rest of the English dept. students (this is usually the case...). Were any of the previous rejections for the Rhetoric emphasis? Maybe no on has been rejected in that area? -

It seems the acceptances for UC Santa Cruz's History of Consciousness program have gone out. I suspect that means rejection for me. I'm not particularly upset about it -- I knew it was a long shot (they admit a notoriously small number of applicants). -
