  1. Mine has the notice stating that "Letters of Recommendation" have not received at the bottom as well. It doesn't mean anything -- it's just a computer glitch.
  2. fyi: Mine also still says "not reviewed."
  3. Re: Buffalo: The fellowship is on top of a teaching assistantship. Everyone who is accepted to the PhD program is fully funded.
  4. Yes, that's great that someone got an acceptance on their third go around. Persistence pays off! I suspect there will be more acceptances coming from Buffalo. No need to worry yet.
  5. It looks like two people got into WUSTL! Congrats!!!! (to whoever it was)
  6. Ditto. No one should go to an unfunded (or partially funded) PhD program.
  7. I would go for it... supposing that it is the kind of paper competition that people from your program would regularly apply for... I wouldn't apply just because you want them to see that you applied to the competition. Either way, it is unlikely that it will hurt your chances for admission.
  8. There are also things like financial packages, location, cost of living, etc. to consider AFTER being accepted into one of those top programs. Having more options is always better. Also, even with high/great stats... who knows how things are going to go when they start talking about your packet in the admissions committee. The admissions statistics at these places are extremely competitive. In that kind of environment, more applications means more opportunities once the dust has settled. If you get into more than one of the top schools, you can try to get a better deal (another semester with no teaching, summer funding, etc... or potentially be awarded a fellowship) from the programs that you REALLY want to go to. That more than offsets the extra application fees.
  9. I applied to a shit ton of programs and I already have two acceptances with fellowships attached to them (both at great schools).
  10. Thanks for all of the kind words!!! Yeah, I think asking questions is good. But it is also okay to just send an initial "thank you" email. Also, I suspect next week is going to be busy: Duke, NYU, U Chicago, WUSTL, Northwestern, Penn State, Riverside, U of Washington, UC Riverside, Wayne State, Michigan State, SUNY Stony Brook, Notre Dame, etc. are all real possibilities based on past years (also, given how busy the end of this week has been, I suspect things are about to pick up pace).
  11. Super excited! Accepted at Buffalo! Presidential Fellowship!
  12. Someone posted an acceptance to UC Santa Cruz History of Consciousness. I guess I can mark that one off as a likely rejection (given that they only accept a handful of people). First "likely rejection" -- yuck.
  13. Awesome! Great program! Best of luck with the interview!
  14. Best of luck! Only applying to one place sounds extra-stressful!
  15. I emailed about this 4 years ago when I was applying to MFA programs (and thinking about applying to Buffalo's poetics program). They basically told me that while the GRE requirement is for fellowships, they try to mostly admit people that they can nominate for fellowships (or have a potential of securing better funding for). So, I think it is slightly more than simply a cut off mark for fellowships. I suspect there is still a chance of being admitted if your application somehow stands out in some way... but having a score below the mark will likely severely limit your chances of being admitted. At least that was the impression I got from my quick email.
  16. Awesome! CONGRATS! Ohio State (Comparative Studies) was my first news also (a week or so ago).
  17. I haven't been accepted yet. They have a minimum requirement for the V/Q score listed on their website (for fellowships)--I was worried about the requirement itself. I scored well above it, but before taking the test I was worried about meeting it.
  18. Buffalo GRE worried me also. It worked out.
  19. Congrats!!!! Awesome funding opportunity too!!!!!
  20. English department politics. Sigh. I think this is probably the case most places.
  21. Ah, bummer with regards to the rejection. Hopefully you get some positive news in the near future =)
  22. I'm using this program called "WriteTrack" to do something like NaMoWriMo this month. Need distraction.
  23. Bataille is the slim thug of 20th century continental philosophy.
