  1. Why do you feel the need to judge other people for applying widely. I applied widely and received a lot of acceptances, I was then able to pick the one with the best funding package and best faculty for me out of the one's that accepted me. I turned down my other offers ASAP. Also, it's not the person who the faculty want to work with more's fault that you're lower than them on the list (and maybe they are actually weighing their options in an honest way). Seriously, don't randomly direct your angst at people. It's pointless. Ugh.
  2. I don't think it is lofty at all. Brown has amazing faculty--they even just stole Cole Swenson from Iowa. C.D. Wright, Cole Swenson, Forrest Gander, Thalia Field, John Cayley, Catherine Imbriglio, Wendy Chun, and the recently retired Waldrops (who are a still a major presence in providence). Also, I can take classes at Harvard, RISD and MIT (so I might be able to sneak into classes with Jorie Graham, Stephen Burt, Mairead Byrne, Nick Montfort, etc.) BU has 3 faculty, and they are all aesthetically conservative (especially in a poetry landscape in which Black Ocean is one of the best selling presses--not that their aesthetic is my "thing"... I simply think what gets held up by awards and Barnes and Noble has very little do do with what is happening in contemporary poetry).
  3. I don't live there -- but Colorado has one of the best brewing communities I've seen anywhere. Period. Also they legalized pot.
  4. Thanks -- I'm super excited. Honestly, Brown (for me) is really really fantastic. Even better than the places I might have gotten into that are slightly higher ranked (they have people doing amazing things directly in my area, and they have the best poetry faculty in the country, hands down... and I can actually take Literary Arts classes as a PhD student).
  5. There are some that I still haven't heard from... but I'm going to Brown. It was my top choice in terms of faculty, ranking, placement, etc. I suppose if I got into U of Chicago I might have convinced myself for geographical reasons. But I didn't, so yeah.
  6. NYU, UW-Madison, SUNY Buffalo, (turned down OSU a while ago).
  7. I just turned down a bunch of programs -- hopefully others hear good news as a result!
  8. I'm this many: holds up 30 fingers.

  11. AWESOME!!!! I HOPE YOU GET IN! YAY! IT WORKED OUT!!!!
  12. Awesome! Congrats on Syracuse!!!!
  13. This seems likely... but you can still try....
  14. Departments sometimes will have internal funding that they can give you in addition to the base package. There are also university fellowship that are in addition to the departments funding (or in replacement of it, usually with a higher $ amount). There are also other types of funding... summer funding, money to move, etc. I'd hesitate to quickly accept an offer (especially if you have more than one offer) if you're trying to get additional funding.
  15. I would wait until there are a few more acceptances (and a waitlist) posted on the board before feeling bleak about UPenn.
  16. Yep, English! Super excited! Thanks for the kind words everyone!
  17. Just accepted at Brown!!!!!!
  18. This. Seriously, don't send an email every time something pops up on the board.
