I learned a lot from the last cycle. This time I've spent much more time looking for fit, rather than at Departments that I wanted to be in. This time around, the only school that remains the same is the one that I deferred (have to apply for funding). I really hit my head last year and wasted quite a bit of money. I applied to Northwestern's RPC last year and they won't be seeing me this year...I have realised I just don't fit. Good luck if you apply again...where else are you thinking? Mine are UIUC, Michigan and USF.

Just getting this topic started for the Fall 2014 cycle. I deferred admission to the one school I was admitted to last cycle and I'm applying to 3 others this time around. I'm interested in new media, race and representation, the public sphere, identity, subaltern studies and cultural studies. Is there anyone else out there?

Gadzooks My experience has been completely different on one level. Most POIs I emailed were quick to answer (within days) and either encourage or discourage accordingly. On the other hand, a few just ignored the email. Those that did, I left alone. I wouldn't infer disinterest from lack of responses, but rather look harder at those I contacted and use the silence to further whittle down your list and only reach out again to those whose programs represent your ideal. Along with having to apply for funding for the programme I deferred, I've zeroed in on 2 more schools to expand my possibilities. Both have deadline dates of Jan. 2 2014...working up the courage to harass my LOR writers for this last go around. Best of luck everyone!

Hi I deferred a place this year, so have a place if I want in Fall 2014, though I will have to compete for funding with some of you in this application season. Other than that though, I am thinking of only applying to 2 schools this go-around UIUC and USF. My background is MA New Media and Society (Dissertation based) with a 3.2 GPA. I'm really interested in autoethnography, media and representation and post colonial studies and these two departments seem as perfect a fit as I can find. Anyo info on either or both departments will be appreciated. My mistake last cycle was focusing on the broad field of study and not the specifics of my proposed project. I swung five times and missed the ball all but once.

Hi I'm 45 and as untraditional as they come. Admission for Fall 2013 was my first cycle and got a place at one of the 5 schools to which I applied, but because I applied late on a rolling admission the place came without funding which means I have had to defer till Fall 2014 and apply for funding before Jan 2014. I said all of this to say I agree with NavyMom, in that we are in the prime of our lives for the vagaries and possible lows of grad school, life experience has to count for something, even if its only the maturity to hndle what comes our way. BTW my field is Media and Communications PhD...nice to know we're not alone
