MFA 2013 All Art ADMISSIONS freak-out forum!!!!!!!!
hwrios replied to ten-of-swords's topic in Visual
I haven't even graduated yet... (hopefully) will in May. For me though, I transferred schools, and there was a huge gap between when I started my BFA and when I'll finish. I'm glad I'm NOT waiting before going to Grad School not only because I'm a bit older than most grads. but also because I know exactly what I want to do, so I don't want to waste time. Plus, it's hard for me to get back into "school mode" once I'm out for a while-- even Christmas break messes me up! Looking back, if I had been able to finish my BFA long ago and not gone back after several years, I don't think I would be ready at all. I had lots of exhibitions, commissions, had Gallery representation for over a year, and met lots of people during that time. -
Yes.

Thank goodness. I hate waiting and waiting just make sure i'm "officially" rejected.... now just have to hear from one more school. -
I agree with bots. I mean, I wouldn't go to a school that had a BAD reputation for art (if anyone knows a school like that, let us know!). But yeah, definitely if i was accepted to a "medium" ranked school with full funding, I would choose that any day over Yale with no funding. Some of my absolute favorite artists went to "medium" ranked art schools. There's only one artist that I really love who went to a top 5 school. Again, it depends on what you want to do! Do you want to teach? Show in Galleries?

Lots of painters have heard from Hunter about interviews-- they all heard on March1. I'm assuming that those of us who heard nothing are rejected. sorry. -
Is it too early to assume rejection from Hunter and CMU? I just need to make plans for my life! Should I call them to confirm that I'm on the reject list?

I think they've already sent out all the emails for interviews. -
What are your goals? To be a "gallery artist"? To sell lots of work? To teach? I think that makes a huge difference. "Fit" isn't just about your style or medium, but a lot of things. Since you aren't applying until next year (i assume?) you have lots of time to research. I would have applied to a lot more schools, but I kindof waited until the last minute and didn't have much money at all for applications. I think it's better to apply to a lot of places so you have more options. As you can see from this forum, there are people who get interviews with Yale, but then mysteriously get rejected from lower ranked schools, so the whole process can be very subjective. Research the profs. at schools. Look at their work, and think about whether or not you want them to be the ones critiquing your work for 2/3 years. Also, unless you have a lot of money already or dont mind being in debt, you should look into which schools have funding. Some offer full tuition wavers, stipends etc. but some have little or no funding. Also, if you are looking into a more "interdisciplinary" school ( i assume you mean multi-media?) It seems like most schools are already heading in that direction, even if you must apply to a specific program, "painting, sculpture, etc." they still usually have a very broad definition of say painting for example, but you could look at examples of student work if you want to find out more about that. Most schools are going to be conceptually focused anyway, except for a few "academy" type schools that would be more focused on techniques, or media.

I REALLY like your work. You should apply to a lot of schools.

PLEASE, go with "medium ranked" university! I'm married with THREE kids, (lol) the amount of difference that the schools reputation will have on your future is tiny compared to the amount of real-life impact that being completely broke during school and in horrible debt will have. Just the stress of being in debt is bad enough. The number one key to success for most artists is having strong motivation and ambition in your work. I don't know much about "Jewelry and metalsmith" but how much will a schools reputation really affect your future career goals? If your goal is to sell your work, then I'm thinking it matters very little, whereas if you are too broke to even afford materials, how are you going to succeed? My advice is to really look at your goals and think about which you will regret more in the future-- having a huge debt or not having a big name school on your resume? For me, I'd rather go with having peace of mind during school and not the burden of debt looming in the back of my mind, especially with having kids. Also, don't put too much weight on rankings. They may give a general idea about the "best" schools, but once you get out of the top 20 or so, i don't think the differences are that much. If the school is accredited, has working facilities, etc, then i wouldn't get hung up on the numbers. In this case, location may be a much more important factor than the ranking. How is the crime rate, weather, etc.? Good luck!

I don't know! Supposedly they only accept like 6 people out of over 400 apps. I'm expecting to be rejected, but i hope they get it over with. -

congratulations! I didn't get any email. waaaah I hope they send rejects out soon, I hate waiting to find out. -
HAHA That's good stuff. Where I think we are at, is that we are just really beyond labeling everything. That's why i don't get wrapped up in these things. But that's hilarious, I love Colbert too... gonna have to watch that one.

People that applied to Carnegie Mellon: Check your slide room and see what it says pleasseeee and tell me! They are reviewing apps today. Mine went from "MFA 2013" to "Sort" LOL! Doesn't sound good, but I'm curious if anyone has something different on theirs. I KNOW I'm not getting in there, but I want a rejection ASAP because I need to do things soon. I've never been so impatient to get rejected from something! -
Sequestration = fewer funding opportunities?
hwrios replied to Gustav's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
yeah, this should be more of a concern to undergrads. Makes me really glad i'm graduating in May, because I had Pell Grants for 4 years. I'm assuming it will effect all loans and any funding that is gov. issued though. I think quite a bit of Grad. funding is private, so that wouldn't be affected until later if people decide to stop giving money to the schools. -
I just saw this after i made my last post. That's a weird coincidence since almost no one knows about Morgantown. I still think rent is cheap here. Plus, a HUGE factor is how much of your utilities are included. My place now is 750, with 2/3 bedrooms and all utilities are included. I think that is amazingly cheap. The last place I lived at was also 750, but the utilities were 300+ a month. Are you at WV State? My dad is a History prof. there. yay
-
yeah, it really does depend on where your school is. I've been living off about 15k a year, and that is with 3 kids and a 3 bedroom apt. but I'm at West Virginia University which makes a big difference. Just look at the cost of living where your schools are, look at rent especially, and your transportation.

yay! Apparently my transcripts disappeared into thin air! (trying to not blame it on my school being incompetent). Payment showed up on credit card, and I received confirmation emails that they had been sent. But none of the schools received them. (and this was back in December.) I think that the schools are being merciful to me though because they said they will accept my unofficial ones until I can resend them. I really feel like going into the Registrar's office and telling someone off. Instead I think I will harness my anger into a new painting. LOL -

CMU actually has on their calendar that they are having an "MFA admissions committee meeting" for March 1. I think it was all day, like 9-5. So maybe they just go over all the apps. in one day? Last year, people received rejections on March 2, so I'm expecting a rejection(haha) next week maybe? Or over the weekend perhaps. -
lol you are right. I have no idea why i put "Tamara".

No, not for Hunter. If you look on their calendar it says "MFA admissions phone interviews" for March 13. Since no one seems to have heard anything at all from them, I certainly wouldn't cross them off your list yet. -

Anyone heard from Hunter? -
I'm not a photographer, but my advice on the specific group of work to bring is that you should bring whatever is the strongest conceptually, esp. if you are able to verbalize that in the interview since they will most likely ask you about this.
