  1. Turned down Georgia State; I believe someone on GC mentioned being on the funding WL. I hope it goes to you!
  2. Could you PM me as well? I didn't see your inital posting, and I'm a PhD WLer.
  3. I am happy to finally have reason to post in this thread! Academicat: could you speak to quality of life in Oxford generally and, if you're familiar with faculty/students in the English Dept. (I know some English/Rhetoric programs are tighter than others), could you speak to the culture/learning environment?
  4. Thanks so much ToldAgain! And congratulations again!!!!
  5. Thanks for sharing, ToldAgain! What's your area? And where are you accepting? (It seems congratulations are in order!)
  6. I haven't turned down an offer yet, but I'm hoping to soon. If anyone is familiar with the programs, could you provide insight into Georgia State or UNC Greensboro? The funding is roughly similar.
  7. BLeonard: This doesn't answer your question, but I did want to share my own experience getting my first MA in an interdisciplinary program from my UG (not an ivy, but one of the top public schools/oldest schools in the country). Having gone through the process, I would highly, highly recommend taking the PhD offer in hand, rather than going through the process all over again to possibly not do as well (as Brandeis). I rolled the dice, so to speak, and my two funded offers right now aren't near the reputation of my UG or first MA. Also, in having lived within walking distance of Brandeis for two years, I must say it's a great place to live, especially for commuting to NY (there's a commuter rail stop less than a quarter mile from campus). This, of course, should all be taken FWIW. Just my experience.
  8. Is anyone else still waiting for funding information? I'd be able to make a decision at this point, but one program is waiting until the 11th hour to reease funding info.
  9. Thanks and if we both end up there we'll need to meet up to bridge the disciplinary divide!
  10. Personally, I'd go BC. They have great exchange programs with other schools in the Boston area, particularly for gender studies, and I've found teaching experience invaluable in my MA program. Plus, competitive funding never looks bad on a CV.
  11. Awesome! I assume you're on the WRAC side? Most of English is still waiting to hear about funding, but if it comes through I'm leaning that way myself. I Had s fantastic time at the visiting weekend.
  12. Given that programs outside the US don't have the April 15 deadline, I think it's totally reasonable to explain you situation, letting them know you want to wait until all your answers are in to make a decision. As a waitlister, I would not hold it against you to take a few extra days to make an extremely important decision.
  13. I echo hypervodka's congratulations and question. I lived in Waltham for a couple years and Boston proper more recently, so if you decide to accept and have questions about the area feel free to PM me.
  14. Typically when someone is admitted earlier than other applicants with funding it's because they were nominated for a school-wide fellowship (thus funds aren't contingent on departmental budget). In the case if school B, my guess would be you're on some sort of funding wait list, but that is strictly speculation on my part. I'm sure an international applicant could speak more to funding issues, though, as it seems they can sometimes vary by program for international students.
  15. 1Q84: I've only talked to DGSes in my case, but I haven't known who the adcomm head has been at any of the schools where I applied (though I expect their one in the same in a few places). If you haven't talked to the DGS anywhere you are WLed I don't think there is any harm in sending a short email expressing your continued interest.
  16. Yes, I have communicated with all DGSes, typically twice (once to confirm that I would acceot a spot on thewait list and once three weeks to a month later to let them know I was still interested).
  17. I know of at least one program that hasn't made funding offers yet. In talking to current grad students and reviewing old posts on GC, this particular department doesn't traditionally offer funding until the first week of April for the vast majority of their students. This is the only program I know for sure that does it this way, and I can't say it's an althogether common practice from what I've seen with other schools.
  18. Thanks much; I'm more pop culture/adaptation/gender, but I'm sure you'll help someone. Fortunately for me, Maryland and Penn State have been really upfront about the fact I'm not likely to come off the waitlist (basically being on the WL at these programs, even far down, is more a reassurance my application isn't total crap than anything). My hold-up is funding info at MSU, which historically doesn't come in until the 11th hour, but us honestly starting to make me a little nuts. For those of you WLers who haven't contacted programs, I would highly recommend it. I sent a very simple email asking about movement on the list and two schools offered to call those accepted who hadn't commited if I were close to accepting an offer elsewhere. Another program thanked me for expressing my continued interest, which they said was very helpful if a spot opens up.
