WT: first off, thanks so much for the advice! I'm going to try to send out emails before class, so we'll see what comes of it. Also, you have every business in this thread! TBH I actually probably posted in the wrong thread, but I wasn't sure where else to put it and didn't think it was worth its own discussion. Thanks again!

For those of you who contacted schools for a decision ETA, how did you phrase your email/phone call? I don't want to ruffle any feathers, but I just got word one of my funded offers (the better of the two) has a hard mid-March deadline. There are a few places I haven't heard from (and where I haven't yet assumed rejection) that would make me decline, but I don't want to turn something down to find out I don't have other options.

Fall 2015 Acceptances (!)

Thanks for sharing, Caroline! I saw the second UF acceptance posted and worried about class size, so that is some solace for now at least. ETA: And great news about the WS cert! -
Fall 2015 Acceptances (!)
InHacSpeVivo replied to hreaðemus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Caroline: Personally, I would just ask the DGS if you could just do the cert there (maybe phrasing it as transfering the credits from your current program toward a WS cert). Honestly, I don't imagine anyine rescinding, especially just for asking. -

I couldn't imagine they'd rescind unless you really played up the certificate in your app (I'm guessing it was listed as anticipated, like your degree would be, on your CV). Most programs have WS certs, so it seems like you could just get it as part of your PhD. Honestly, I don't think it would hurt to ask your top choice if they have a problem with you not getting the cert. -
Fall 2015 Acceptances (!)
InHacSpeVivo replied to hreaðemus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I don't think there's such a thing as over-applying as long as you can scrape together the funds. Time and again I've seen people accepted from only one or two higher ranking programs and rejected in programs outside of the top 50. Really, you can never tell. That being said, candidates such as yourself with tons of really strong options are clearly doing something very right! However, I am the last person to guess what that is, as I get the feeling something is profoundly lacking in my application given the relatively luckwarm response I've received after a second MA. Anyway, great work, and best of luck with your decision! (And, once again, a profound thanks for the quick decisionmaking on programs you ruled out!) -

I'm leaving for Canada in four days. What are the odds I'll hear from all eight programs by then... -
Fall 2015 Acceptances (!)
InHacSpeVivo replied to hreaðemus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Based on what I've seen/heard, I'm guessing all Oregon acceptances have gone out. That being said, I haven't seen any rejections posted yet, so waitlists could still be a possibility (or a full blown acceptance for folks in 19c given the number of declinations in that area). Fortunately, Oregon seems, historically at least, like one of the programs that mails rejections about the same time acceptance calls go out, so those of us in limbo should know something soon. -

I only wish I had a Chapel Hill offer to decline for you! -
Waiting to Exhale (the wait list thread)

Thanks! If only I were 19c! I'm expecting to get a "no" from Oregon this weekend, but on behalf of everyone waiting to hear I must thank all of you making decisions early! -
2015 Rejections
InHacSpeVivo replied to SilasWegg's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Just got my SECOND snail mail rejection from Milwaukee. It was a very nice letter, but I am doubly confused because it specifically cited a lack of fit as the reason for my rejection (I only applied is because the DGS said I was a great fit for the program). That time/energy/money could have gone to another app! It's also funny that Milwaukee has had time to reject me twice, but Maryland hasn't been able to reject me once yet! Please excuse the early March impatience... -

Congratulations, kingfishers! I would be seriously considering if admitted, but it looks like Oregon is officially going into the implied rejection column for me. You have some great options to weigh, though! Congrats! And thanks for withdrawing, morris! We're not in the sane area, but the early Americanists I'm sure are all pleased to hear there's one less talented applicant in the pool! -
2015 Rejections
InHacSpeVivo replied to SilasWegg's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks, Lycidas! (though at least two of my applications will be moving to the implied rejections column if I don't hear by tomorrow). IDK why half the schools I applied to traditionally don't notify until March. I'm considering emailing Maryland soon. I was promised a rejection by the end of February! I really don't think I'll ever understand the whole phenomenon of rejection via radio silence. -

Thanks, Caroline! Allplaid was kind enough to provide some more intel as well. BTW, you are awesome for turning down these offers so quickly! It's too bad I'm 20/21 c American lit/pop culture, but I'm sure you're helping someone a lot! -
Fall 2015 Acceptances (!)
InHacSpeVivo replied to hreaðemus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Congrats to all the recent admits! I've been traveling the past couple days, but it's great to come back to do much good news! I think Chapel Hill asking is a very good thing, especially since you have so many great offers! my fingers are crossed for Chapel Hill for you (having just come back from visiting MSU without funding info, I am in a very similar, very stressful situation). Re: Oregon, outside of the huge, well-deserved congratulations on Oregon especially because I've done so much looking into the program. Did you already formally turn them down? I had some incredibly positive exchanges with the DGS before applying, so that rejection is going to sting more than most. I'm very much hoping I'm on an informal waitlist of sorts, so I pretty much worship anyone acceptees turning them down early. A similar awe if morris for withdrawing an app! The Florida applicants thank you, especially given decisions haven't gone out! Speaking of declining offers, could anyone share how they phrase an email to decline? I was very much hoping I had heard about funding from MSU at this point and could decline all other offers, but even if they can't fund me there I will have at least a couple declinations to make (a good situation for sure, but one that will take a little longer given that my current acceptances are all about on par with each other). -

Conratulations! Personally, I'd give it a day before e-mailing them. In most cases I received additional information from the department within 24 hours of notification. -
