  1. Is the stipend generally dispersed on a monthly basis or once per semester? I've heard it differs from school to school.
  2. I definitely considered applying to schools in both lol.
  3. Like some others previously mentioned, certain schools do a really good job of recording graduate placement. I think using Academia.edu and following/stalking people associated with any given department is another good way to see what graduates are currently doing. Placements of graduates was a huge factor in selecting graduate schools to which I wanted to apply, so I've spent countless hours e-stalking people for this very reason. OSU's PhD placement record for the interested (second link follows graduates throughout their career): 2011 & 2012 http://english.osu.edu/graduate-studies/phd-placement 2001-2010 http://english.osu.edu/sites/english.osu.edu/files/PlacementData.pdf
  4. I have a friend who got accepted into Wisconsin's program a week or two ago (I think she's comp rhet).
  5. Accepted to the Afro-American studies MA program at Wisconsin with the option to finish with a PhD from the English department. I guess this makes up for the Michigan rejection. *does a little dance*
  6. Thanks, I'm hopeful you'll be able to say the same for yourself soon.
  7. The program only makes offers to those they can fully fund (asked when I visited last fall). As far as the funding packages go, I think it depends on the student as far as fellowship outlooks (it does seem that there's a basic package the department offers in the absence of fellowships).
  8. I'm English lit and I'm extremely thankful for the opportunity I've been provided because I've totally been rejected from 2 of my top 3. You only need 1 though, right?
  9. Got my first official rejection letter from Michigan today. Can't win 'em all.
  10. Did not get into Michigan. Oh well, already accepted Ohio State's offer. Good luck to those of you who get in!
  11. University of Alabama started notifying people on the 10th of last year...
  12. Biggest factors for me were probably (in order): Funding (vs. cost of living) Program reputation (includes job placement prospects for graduates) Faculty match Department culture Location Unfortunately, for me, the best faculty members I find tend to be in the shittiest places. OSU has a good balance of everything.
  13. Your plan B is my dream.
  14. I attend an HBCU so the faculty within my department are pretty familiar with Lorde and the like, but it is the South so only a few do research that pertains to sexuality in general. With that said, we spent a while on Octavia Butler and her works in Literary Theory (there's a grad student at IU in the gender studies program who is approaching her works from a disability studies standpoint), but I totally see from where you're coming. I think IU probably has the best faculty fit for me, but I just can't see myself in Bloomington (however beautiful) for what is typically 7 years. It's really sad though because they have one of the biggest (if not the biggest) Black Film Archive in the nation along with the Kinsey Institute.
  15. Fellowship notifications come out on February 18th by 4pm EST which is (as previously suggested) most likely when they'll know if they can accept/decline others. It also accounts for the 10 day notification time frame from the 8th that sebastiansteddy mentioned.
  16. Perhaps you're right. It came in the form of an e-mail from the secretary (Nina J. Taylor) and had most pertinent information in a separate document (it was personalized). Have you applied?
  17. Hopefully doing research at UCLA (not one of the schools I applied to) and saving money to move across the country.
  18. Not a problem, I'm always excited to meet people with similar research interests (which is super rare here in Alabama). Haven't seen any formal posts about the applicant, but I can't see any reason to speculate she wasn't real.
  19. University of Central Florida has a deadline of March 30th (priority is January 15th): http://www.graduatecatalog.ucf.edu/programs/program.aspx?id=10339&tid=3914&tap=1&program=English%20MA,%20Rhetoric%20and%20Composition University of Texas at San Antonio has a deadline of July 1st (if you want to apply for the English MA and get a certificate in Rhet/Comp): http://graduateschool.utsa.edu/graduate-admissions/graduate-school-application-deadlines/ Northeastern University has a deadline of August 1st (if you're independently funded): http://www.northeastern.edu/english/graduate/admissions/admissions-deadlines/ University of Louisiana has a deadline of June 30th: http://english.louisiana.edu/concentrations/index.shtml Hope it works out for you!
  20. Offered full funding at Indiana University for the Gender Studies PhD.
  21. Got accepted to the Gender Studies PhD program at IUB.
  22. I was stressed while waiting to hear back from schools and now I feel even more stressed while attempting to find an apartment miles and miles away. No online or phone payments? Just WTF???????????? /rant
