  1. Being in Italy is a pretty decent cure for most life stress.
  2. Yep! Toronto's a long shot though - there's a foreign student quota. Not sure if that's universal for Canada?
  3. Tënürë Träck
  4. I'm an american applicant applying to Toronto. Do I count
  5. Isn't Chicago's app due today? Website says Dec. 15.
  6. The thing that tends to trip up people who have studied spoken German is the extended adjective construction. I know the people who create the language exams at my school deliberately chose passages with many EACs to trip up people who are used to speaking and not reading. I find academic French easier than German, but I have something like a total of 15 years experience learning various romance languages.
  7. You say "teaching", I say "advising". People here offer their own advice and perspectives, and sometimes that perspective is that the person asking the question is wrong. I don't see that as problematic. Nor can I really agree that this is simply venting. There's a thread for that, and this one specifically solicited feedback. I agree that the question is fair, but I also think that the advice to first examine one's initial reaction - that his or her grade is unfair - is well-founded. Moreover, people only seemed to "pile on" based on C&C's followup posts - Cookie's statements were originally not well-received.
  8. Uh, so they learn and maybe next time they're in a stressful situation they'll behave differently?
  9. It's working for me?
  10. Thanks! I'm sure my friend will be very excited!
  11. Which is super weird because they use a really competent and professional 3rd party system for summer-semester applications only. I know, because I tried to fill that out first.
  12. FYI, if anyone else is applying to OSU, they may have decided that some of your materials are unacceptable but decided it wasn't worth notifying you directly. Double check the website!
  13. Not quite. The conference requested that someone from the project come talk, and the professor who oversees the project asked me my friend, who's in charge of the project's day-to-day operations, if he'd like to do it. To put it more generally, if a group/institution is invited to give a talk and a person is chosen from that group or institution, is that person giving an invited talk?
  14. If, hypothetically, a conference organizer approached the project for which a certain person is the managing editor to give a presentation at their conference, and the professor in change (executive editor?) asked that person if I'd like to do it, would there be any problems with that person putting this on his or her CV under "Invited Talks"? I'm asking for a friend.

  16. Sorry I missed this before. The problem is that it's not entirely clear how to do this. If you get a bad book, the choice is pretty stark - be honest and offend the author, or softball it and have other readers (who may eventually be looking at your job application) think you're a moron. I suppose you could always turn it down (I'm not sure of the precise mechanics of this). Although it's less apparent, that dilemma doesn't go away for mediocre or even very good books.
  17. I can say that where I am, the overhead from grants (30%) is removed from the total award.
  18. I still think it would be useful to find out what the underlying issue is. Can you talk to the post-doc, who seems to be a bit of a go-between?
  19. It shouldn't be a goddamn fight to have gender neutral language in a document.
  20. Gaiman’s First Law: “Picking up your first copy of a book you wrote, if there’s one typo, it will be on the page that your new book falls open to the first time you pick it up.” - Neil Gaiman
  21. Submitted application yesterday. Found minor typo ("that that") in SOP today.
  22. I am frankly kind of shocked that anyone with interests narrow enough for doctoral applications could find more than 6-8 programs with relevant faculty. Is this a difference between subject fields?
  23. Dec. 1; they were in by the 26th tho.
  24. Three different people in towns near schools I applied to found my academia.edu page this week. Hm.
