dr. t got a reaction from Hanyuye in Boston & Cambridge, MA
You can also take the 71 to Harvard Square and catch the 86 to BC. Dunno which is faster.
Morning traffic is pretty bad, particularly going N/S since there's not too many bridges (or good routes) over the Charles. I'd say driving ~30min, on the T, ~50-60min.
Were it me, I would not live in Watertown and commute to BC. I'd look at Brighton particularly. Not only does it half your commute, but it makes you much less reliant on the T. The T is slow, keeps a terrible schedule, and is often late. I haven't used it in many years; I prefer to bike in sleet and snow.

dr. t reacted to JosephClarkGrew in Are humanities grad students pathetic?
I just feel like humanities students are the most pathetic forms of people. Humanities are easy and pointless and that's why the field is so flooded. Sciences (such as physics) are what really impacts the world and changes things and helps people. What do humanities really do?
The students are pathetic too. They are miserable because they tried to do what they loved but society hated it. Society hates them because they are just writers and 99.9% of writers are pathetic too. Even the Simpsons hates grad students. Those poor grad students, they can't even watch the simpsons to escape their woe!
Idk, I loved humanities and thought they were great but now I realized that I was wrong to enjoy them and that writing, and humanities are bad, their practitioners are pathetic and that sciences are the only way, even if you don't enjoy them, because they are the only way to actually do things.
Maybe I'm just cynical.

You have book reviews (being) published in journals? Do you have an adviser who thought this was a good idea?

dr. t got a reaction from ZacharyObama in MAPSS vs. MTS
Thanks all! What you're saying is in line with what my current professors are saying which is great.
I think my decision also got a lot easier because I learned how to read. I thought HDS had offered me a $19k grant on $35k tuition and $3k in fees. What they actually gave me was a $19k grant on $25k tuition and $3k in fees. I'm pretty sure that's the ball game, though I'll still go and look at Chicago.
In other news, I'm a huge derp.
Thanks again for all your help!

The issue with medieval is that these days many programs (especially the top programs) only accept 1 medievalist a year. It can make for pretty tough competition and you may have just been unlucky.

Someone above compared this to a marathon. I'd say it's kind of like that, but right before the finish line all the spectators tackle you and kick you a lot.

I was not part of the Great Chicago Massacre today, but I also didn't get invited for an interview. Is this a good thing, a bad thing, or just a thing?
