  1. Yes. I'm waiting from Univ. of Pittsburgh, but I am very worried that I might not get in How about you?
  2. Hi all. For those who applied to the University of Pittsburgh's PhD program in Film and Media Studies and English, have you received an email via computational programming? It is a confusining email, and the second email said it was an error, but I was wondering if anyone received a letter from their POI?
  3. Hi everyone! Has anyone applied to Film and Digital Media Department at UC Santa Cruz? A few hours ago, I was contacted by POI for a brief interview. I was wondering if other applicants received the same email as well?
  4. Is there anyone who's planning on applying to U. Pittsburgh's Film and Media Studies PhD program? I couldn't find an information in their website about the requirements for admission, but the website of the English department (where I will associate it as a joint program) says that a 20-page writing sample is required. I wonder if that's the same pages for F&M admission as well.
  5. If I may, I would wait until early- to mid-August. Have you written your request in a way that is less pressure for them to write? Good luck by the way!
  6. I definitely know the feeling! I'm so worried since this year many applicants will emerge to apply to schools that were closed last year, so I assume that there might be fierce competition. So I would strongly suggest applying to "safe" schools, if there are such schools. If you want, I can share a list of schools with film program that my previous institution has given me. (By the way, did your school also give you a recommended program list or the like?)
  7. Those are excellent programs! i'm planning on applying to schools that might be realistic for me to get in. I'm thinking UC Santa Cruz and Univ. of Pittsburgh (not sure becuase they closed the admissino cycle last year due to COVID). I'm also thinking of Univ. of Washington as well. If Univ. of Michigan (which was also closed its admission cycle last year) opens its cycle, I might consider applying to it. Are you closing in on your choices based on your research interest or school merit? For me, it's both.
  8. Nice to meet you and good luck on upcoming admission process! I'm also applying for US programs as well. May I ask which programs you are thinking of applying?
  9. Thank you! This is extremely helpful. I was also wondering how many professors you wrote you letters were in the film and media studies-related department? I also have a question about the structure of your SOP, but I know that'd too much...
  10. Hi! I was wondering if you have received any result from UCSC's film and digital media program. Would you mind sharing the experience of applying there? Thanks!
  11. Hang in there! Is another program in film and media studies field? I'm kinda curious...
  12. Exciting news, congrats! May I ask a few questions for my own reference to admission for next year? Such as how did you well package your application documents? (Was all three recommendations from university professors? How was your GRE score? etc.) Again, warmest congratulations, and you should find a perfect way to celebrate
  13. Hi, I'm glad that you're deciding to embark on a challenging yet rewarding experience of PhD program! I'm just curious. What were the professors' reasons for saying it's not a good time to be a doctoral student? Was it funding, competitiveness, closing of admission cycle, etc.? Also, were your friends all in film studies program to give you the warning? What was their reason? I'd love to know what is their justification. Thanks!
  14. Very sorry to hear that. But don't give up just yet. If possible, you should try again next year. This year has been massively competitive due to pandemic, notwithstanding the fact that most US film studies programs usually accept five applicants (compared to 15 in social science field). I salute you for at least trying. If you're gonna try again, you should take the time to hone your SOP and other documents to their best form possible. Good luck on your endeavor!
  15. I also got the exact letter template for the PhD admission, for which I got rejected. We did our best...
  16. I asked the UW graduate coordinator and this is what she wrote back to me: We are aiming to make admissions decisions (along with waitlist decisions) around mid March. Although I don't know the exact plans for the admissions committee, I would expect the committee will want to speak with folks on the waitlist before making a final offer. I hope this helps. Best of luck, everyone!
  17. Likewise! Have you conducted the interview with UW? If so, I hope it went well. If it's alright with you, would you share some questions that came out during the interview? I'd greatly appreciate that! Happy March, and best of luck!
  18. Mine's postcolonial documentary films and US imperialism in East Asia. Good luck and I hope you get an offer!
  19. Based on the results from a couple of years ago, one of the respondents said s/he did an interview and still got rejected. But I might be wrong, so don't give up hope! What's your research interest, if you don't mind me asking?
  20. @Kim2016, @fossati Please don't give up hope just yet. There's always next year to try again. This year has been weird and tough due to COVID that forced some schools to cancel the admission process. What are both of your research interest, if you don't mind me asking? I'm focusing on postcolonial documentary films and nationalism in East Asia cinema.
  21. Hi, are you referring to UW's graduate coordinator? By decisions in early March, was s/he referring to "final" decision (like acceptance, waitlist, and/or rejection)? If there is any information that was not mentioned in this thread, I'd greatly appreciate it!
