  1. I do the same thing. I read the abstract and conclusion first to decide if this is even a paper worth reading. intro is sometimes helpful for leaning more info, but a lot of times, I'm reading the same things over and over
  2. Can we share ideas on ways we can get better at reading effectively? I use mendeley, try to do lit review style bullet point summaries of the papers I read for later I need to work on getting better at setting benchmarks for myself, otherwise, I'm just stuck in an ether of "wtf did I just do today?" how about you?
  3. when you help your boys with their homework, and they end up scoring higher than you
  4. oh i try to dissociate my me-time at home from my work and classes. I purposely keep my lab key separate from my apartment key to remind me to try to have a life off campus
  5. for a first year? that seems like a lot.
  6. so i'm supposed to write a thank you letter to a small tuition fellowship that i supposedly got. I don't know anything about this fellowship. Do I just put down like 3 sentences with my name at the bottom?
  7. friend of mine is leaving exxon! he's super stoked about working for a company that actually benefits society.
  8. to save money, I never buy alcohol. either I completely abstain from it, or I just make liquor by making 1:1 ethanol:nanopure water from our squeeze bottles in the lab.
  9. that goes for debt as well
  10. I plan to go to vegas every couple of weeks to count cards at the black jack tables. anyone want to be my spotter? 70/30 split
  11. i need to make more time for going out. man nature's calling.
  12. oh yea, I've ridden in houston a few times. not a great place to ride at all to my knowledge. so sprawled out. not enough bike lanes. i keep saying this. we need to be more like europe
  13. as a cyclist, i regularly break the rules, but with discretion towards other drivers and pedestrians, but I can understand how there are people who are just unaware. (I think we had this conversation before) are you in a big city? or big campus?
  14. at this point, as I see the clusters of students walk across the intersections, I tend to visualize them as bowling pins. if it were a video game, I'd be driving a hummer and bowling strikes.
  15. hobbies, church, student organizations, to name a few
  16. i don't mind roommates. living alone would mean 2-3x the cost. F that Sh although. I will say you should choose wisely. my last lease (or sublease) had a roommate that had a dog that was neglected and took several shits on the living room carpet, never did any cleaning, and didn't do shit on move out day, while I stayed behind until midnight to clean up, and still got hit by a hefty fine, because the charges were distributed evenly. however, my current roommates are responsible, and nice.
  17. just different opinions. I happen to side with those who think that obesity is a real problem, and ignorance is not bliss.
  18. skipping meals is bad. look it up..
  19. wow, thanks for the link. I may buy the book and it's not so much complexity than me being lazy. I shop based on what I think I'm lacking nutrition wise, and make my meals based on what I have in the frig. it's probably a good idea to broaden the cooking knowledge so I'm not buying the same things over and over
  20. http://www.budgetbytes.com/recipes/ ohh.. YISSSSS *then looks at list of ingredients, and don't know what half of them are*
  21. i think the most important 3 for a time stricken grad student are 1. recognizing good vs bad processed food. replace ice cream with milk or yogurt, pastry with oatmeals, orange flavored soda with real oranges. cheap sauges with ground meat or cut meat. there's a pattern here. do you see? the bad processed foods all have excess amount of salt and sugar, the two worst culprits in making america fat. 2. eat a lot of vegetables. they're lower in calories, so whatever food you're replacing with vegetables, you have to make up for it by eating more. i know a few vegans who have lost 30+ lbs by going vegan. this is accompanied by better mental clarity and healthier lifestyle in general (not just related to food). eat your greens, and other colors too. 3. exercise consistently, whether it's yoga, gym, crossfit, running stairs in your building, walking your dog, wrestling with bears, and stick to it. it doesn't have to be fancy. the key word is consistency.
  22. i attribute my weight loss to eating less meat. meat used to be my primary portion. now, I eat about half as i used to. i don't fluctuate very much, and i've gone down from 165 lbs to high 150s. now, if I see low 160s, I'm either over hydrated, or i need to put more time on the bike. not a health guru, but my advice is to stay away from processed stuff, and replace it with fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc. you can save time and still be healthy. it's more a matter of making the decision also, it's important to point out there are good ways to lose weight and bad ones.. overworking, skipping meals, bad stress etc. are examples of unhealthy weight loss. otoh, exercise, better dieting, are good. kind of obvious, but also very important.
  23. then nevermind
