  1. again, and hopefully for the last time.. carbs is energy for your body (and brain). if you're not on carbs, you're running on fat and/or protein, which is is bad, because fat makes you fat... again, not all carbs are the same. you can get it from candy, fruits, bread, even vegetables. just because you're not eating bread doesn't mean you're not eating carbs. just because potato chips make you fat doesn't mean carbs is bad for you. if you can't eat bread or pasta, try rice, or something that doesn't upset the stomach.. your body get its energy on carbs. to say that carbs is bad for you only means that you're not eating the right carbs. substituting protein for carbs (as previously suggested) is wrong and stupid.. I don't know any simpler way of saying this..
  2. got word today that a 19 year old (Tommy) got killed in a hit and run yesterday. he left home at 5 pm and never came back. his mom found him the next morning at 7, and stayed with him until he passed away... the driver ran away........ I didn't know him, but I remember him in races from last year, and this past weekend. He got a lot stronger, and I was looking forward to competing with him. I would never have expected that he would be dead 2 days after we raced right next to each other.. My teammate says he wants to organize a ride to raise awareness. Trek might be involved. Lance Armstrong says he'll get involved.. everyone in the community who's hearing about this is reacting to this right now.. it suckss to think we have to share the road with people who don't fucking pay attention, more over people who refuse to take responsibility in taking someone's life, and it angers me to no end. We do what we can to ensure our safety on the road, and sometimes that's not enough, because people behind the wheel have fucking ADD. that's such a disgrace
  3. oh i've been wanting to do yoga, but never really got into it. it's like a combo between meditation and core exercises, which I need for cycling. right now, I'm just starting to get more into my core workouts. do you yoga independently or pay for classes?
  4. eat less processed foods (sugar from orange flavored fig newtons isn't the same sugar from oranges) eat a balanced diet high carbs (your fuel for the day, especially for cardio, which the OP needs) vegetables/fruits (your micronutrients/vitamins etc.) some proteins (most people don't have to worry about this) am I crazy? What irritates me is that people always advocate protein, as if people aren't eating enough of it already. and the reason for this protein obsession entirely stems from the fitness industry, trying to market a waste product to ignorant people who want to get swole. protein/fat is calorie dense, and has the tendency to rob our body of other nutrients that cold be deficient. for most people with weight problems, if you can substitute some of those dense meat calories with the same amount of vegetable or carb calories, then the results will most likely be favorable.
  5. I exercise plenty. your body doesn't need more than 130 g of protein/day, even for muscle building. anything in excess of that is weight gain, which is what the OP is trying to avoid. and with the exercise industry being so hung up on protein, most people are over compensating their macro nutrients and not focusing enough on plants/vegetables. 9 out of 10 people in this country right now can improve their diet by consuming less processed food, and eating more fruits/vegetables. I didn't say stop eating protein. I just said eat less, because you're probably eating too much of it.
  6. you don't need to fast to have a healthy diet. avoid processed foods, replace potato chips with real potatoes (I like to microwave an entire sweet potato and eat it with a fork. it's delish and healthy), follow the food pyramid, and buy fresh food (lot of carbs; carbs=energy. lots of vegetables=micronutrients, vitamins etc. fruits have high sugar content, which is good for energy, less meat - protein/fat make you gain weight) get your diet balanced. It's a lifestyle. I don't agree with fasting or purging because that's kind of like ordering a 3000 cal entree and justifying it with a diet coke. I know we're all poor and frugal with our money, but food is probably the one thing that I will not skimp on. What you put into your body and how you treat it will affect you years later.
  7. just found out that i might be getting funding for summer/onward! no more TA?? hooray!
  8. I'm filling out my n400 form to become a naturalization. As I go about this, I'm wondering whether it's really a good idea to be an American anymore. also, it costs $640. fuck that
  9. do you guys buy your advisers gifts and crap like that? my mom won't stop nagging me about giving my adviser a tie or some shit. I'm like "Mom. STOP IT"
  10. i recommend drive by daniel pink talent is overrated (gladwell?) now reading so good they can't ignore you (cal newport) good shit
  11. i need to unplug from the news, because every corner i turn, all i see is trump and his cabinet of cronies.
  12. stomach still tender from food poisoning. having to make up exam i missed due to said poisoning. thanksgiving break nearing, and I am absolutely out of fucks to give. I just want to get my motorcycle fixed finally and ride out to hill country. can a guy dream?
  13. good thing the renewable market (what I'm interested in) is doing pretty well in the private sector, even without government subsidies, it will still survive. the people will do what the government is blind to.
  14. we're going to pull out of the Paris deal, dissolve the EPA and cut all funding to the DOE, in order to redirect that funding to "Make America Great Again" fuck me
  15. i had two cats once, until the boy tried to mate with his sister, and then they were no longer friends, so I gave the girl to my mom in the midwest, and they now adore each other. 1. but when I had two, and living by myself, whenever I went on a trip or something, I'd leave out like 4 litter boxes. you have to gauge how much food and water you put out, vs the amount of litter you put out. ideally, you'd want there to be more litter than necessary to accommodate everything they eat. I've had it work for up to 5 days, with no accidents on the floor.. that I know of,. and they didn't seem super pissed when I came back. but every cat's different. 2. as long as I'm responsible, and can take care of my pet, there's no reason why my cat would leave a bigger footprint or cause any more damage to the apartment than a human. so unless the leasing office make unscheduled visits to my room without telling me (which has happened), I ignore any pet regulations. judge me if you want. it's not a matter of morals for me. I just don't like following bullshit corporate rules.
  16. that's ok, I only use like 10 apps, half of which I use regularly, and they're all really basic, and available on the old OS. I don't have facebook or imgur or any of that extra shit on there anymore, which is a good thing, because less distractions. although, compared to 4G, this 3G is slow AF. yea, it's neat and all. I can totally see how people would find it useful for security and convenience. I don't do any purchases with my phone. only sensitive information i have on there is email, and even that doesn't have anything I want to hide from anyone. phone is a phone to me. to some people it's like their lives. and there's everything in between.
  17. sounds like either you need a vacation or reevaluate your priorities.
  18. i didn't do jack shit today. I have to learn a whole bunch of shit before I can even start, and everyone's busy. reading is starting to become a major drag. damit..
  19. I just realized that my note 5 can recognize my thumb print to get past the lock screen... amazing. although I'm giving this one to my dad, and trading for his iphone 4. I want something small that I can carry around, and not feel bad when I drop it. anyone remember the iphone 4? nothing fancy, but good enough for maps, audiobooks with bluetooth headphones, messaging, and other basic things. anyone else agree? why pay top dollar for the latest bullshit, when you can get 90% of the way there with something that costs 10% as much?
  20. this was on campus, where I work. I'm just glad it wasn't my PI. that would have been pretty fucking weird.
  21. want to talk about awkward moments? one of the dudes on my floor caught me with my drawers down in the bathroom stall, as I was changing the bandage on my hip from my bike crash last week. I forgot to lock it.
  22. nexus9 is holding up pretty well. it's doing it's job, although I'm not more partial to the 11" laptop I got, because I need to type stuff too.. still going to keep the nexus, for pleasure reading, vacations, and stuff.
  23. if you're unhappy with where you are now, dig deep and visualize where you want to be. what are your strengths, interests. why are you on this earth? I'm pretty sure you weren't put on this earth so that people can call you Dr. in something. So you'll have to do a little better than that and start learning more about what really drives you.
