  1. Hi, iampheng. I am attending UW in the fall to pursue an MFA. I was really interested in cooperative housing, so I looked on the Madison Community Cooperative website to find openings. I applied to Phoenix and was accepted! Cooperative living isn't for everyone though. In previous places I've lived, I just used Craigslist.
  2. I'm visiting UW-Madison next week. It is my top choice program. I'd love to know about queer culture in Madison, public transportation, and how long the winters are.
  3. You can't go wrong with a lenovo.
  4. Are there zip-cars on campus? I'm visiting next week. I have lots of meetings, but what are some fun evening activities? I know about The Daily Page, but I'd like to know some specific places that tend to be great (and especially queer friendly) Also, what is queer culture like in Madison?
  5. I'm headed to Madison in a week and I will be there for a few days. I'd love to visit some local galleries. Any recommendations?
  6. http://bleedingtruth.org/ I only have a couple of things on there. I applied using my People, Places, and Things series, video, and images of a collaborative interactive performance and series of workshops with a group of nonprofit community groups.
  7. Have people already heard from Indiana University-Bloomington?
  8. Probably all that back story is unnecessary and sort of led to a To Long, Didn't Read sort of scenario.
  9. I'm visiting two of the schools I was accepted at and talking with faculty, the department chair, and a few current students. What are some good questions to ask?
  10. University of Kentucky offered me a TA position with a $9,500 stipend and a full tuition scholarship.
  11. Wisconsin-Madison - accepted (4D) University of Kentucky - accepted + tuition remission scholarship and TA (stipend) OSU (sculpture) - rejected Indiana University-Bloomington (sculpture/art and technology) - ??
  12. Not a reading, but there is a post-postmodern movement called the New Sincerity.
  13. I applied to studio art MFA programs, which generally don't offer the greatest funding. I am visiting my second choice grad school on Thursday (driving, it is in the same state where I live). They have offered me tuition remission+$9,500 for stipend for 9 months (TA), no mention of benefits like health insurance. The letter stated that they want to know by March 17 if I will accept their offer, but they belong to the Council of Graduate Schools, so I would like to politely ask them to let me decide by April 15. I will be meeting the chair of the department and person I will be working with. It is a pretty small department and I'm not sure if there are any other professors that really do similar work as mine (4-D, mostly video and social practice, some installation). The professor I'll be meeting said she would try to arrange a couple of current students for me to talk with as well. I want to be prepared with some good questions for both the professor I'll be meeting and the students she'll introduce me to. --- During my spring break, I will be visiting my top choice school (flying) March 12-15. I have appointments scheduled with two professors I am interested in working with, the chair of the department, and three current graduate students (a third year and two first years). I am going out for drinks with a group of first years that Wednesday, and sitting in on a class on Thursday. I pretty much have stuff scheduled every day I'll be there. I will have submitted my TA and project assistant applications by the time I'll be there, and my portfolio will have been reviewed, but they won't announce who gets interviews until the last day I'm there and the interviews aren't scheduled until April. They don't inform people whether or not they get funding until May. Their positions have varying pay scales, but even the lowest amount is as much as I was offered by my second choice school and it includes health insurance and tuition remission. I'd like to use my second choice school as a bargaining chip on the whole funding thing. When is a good time to bring that up? I applied for project assistant positions with the two professors I'm interested in meeting. I've thoroughly looked through their websites. What questions should I ask them about their work? About other things? Should I talk to them about the project assistantship? What should I say to the department chair? I was given contact info for students doing similar work, so I set up meetings with a few of them. I'll ask them if the program is what they expected. I'm not sure what else. Thanks!
  14. That makes me really sad because I am a strong candidate and I really feel like I have a very good chance of getting either a TA or PA. If I get one of those positions it comes with tuition remission, stipend, and health insurance. Why do schools offer aid after April 15? Do you think I can use this as a bargaining chip during my interview and ask for some kind of security?Do you think I can use this as a bargaining chip during my interview and ask for some kind of security?
  15. For one school, it was two weeks between unofficial acceptance (phone interview) and official department email with scanned letter. Haven't gotten any mail yet though. Unofficial acceptance was Jan 16. I received another unofficial acceptance and tuition waver+TA (voice mail, then phone call) four days ago. I was told the official letter should be here in the next week, but I haven't gotten it yet.
