I just got accepted into University of Florida's MA program, fully funded by TAship.

I sort of share your sentiment, but for different reasons. The faculty at my uni who have met the man have all pretty much said he's a rather pugnacious self-important dick. Plus I've been told that he and Pippin don't get along so well, which would have been bad news for my dissertation work.

Declined a GSU MA offer. It seems like a really solid program. I hope it helps someone!

I honestly think your best best is to work on a writing sample and do some language work. Things are hard enough for us, being continental-leaning applicants in a predominantly analytic environment, so the best thing you can do is make yourself into the strongest applicant possible.

Not to get too into this, but I think it's totally a stretch. A return to the body and the meaning of the earth (if we're referring to Thus Spoke Zarathustra) doesn't really have any ethical emphasis (or if it does, it's not normative or applied ethics). If anything in Nietzsche's work has to do with ethics, it's metaethics at most, and the things you're referring to have more of an existential value to them than (meta)ethical. My exclamation at the seeming impossibility of a Nietzsche and Bioethics project also has something to do with Nietzsche's approach to doing philosophy being incompatible with the kinds of approaches I've seen in works by ethicists, so I think there are a lot more problems for a Nietzsche and Bioethics paper than just content issues. But hey, if someone pulls it off and it's actually a convincing reading of Nietzsche's work, I'll legitimately eat a shoe and film myself doing it for the benefit of this forum.

I would eat one of my shoes if someone could write a believable dissertation on Nietzsche and Bioethics.

I used that book for the Eastern Phil course I co-taught. Good stuff, though I don't like the Zhuangzi translation.

My thoughts as I was going through the preview:
"And I tell you the greatest thing this country could ever do is go into the Middle East and wipe out their ignorance with an iron fist."

    - Okay...what the fuck is going on here? Is he quoting himself? This is some borderline racist shit.

"Blah blah blah a bunch of Pre-Socratics...representative of the initial boom of the human mind."

    - Alright...let's just ignore the other half of the world and their philosophical traditions which began either prior to or concurrent with the Pre-Socratics. So much for being sensitive to Eastern thought.

    - What the hell is going on with the capitalization in this book?

"Neither Man nor his culture may be reasonably considered exclusive from his Nature."

    - Wat? Also, what is this, the 17th century? Pretty sure we don't refer to the entirety of humanity as "Man" and "his nature" anymore.

    - And who the hell rates their own book? Even more confusing is the fact that he gave it three stars. Why would you publish it if it was only worth three stars? This guy, I swear.

I would have received my patches, but it seems that they've been sent back to Mars.

Just kidding. I'll take a picture soon. Still trying to figure out what to sew them to.

Can confirm. Sender is dfindley. I received a copy of both books with a request to send in a review for both works to Philosophical Review. Just kidding.

Thanks for the patches, PhD Applicant!

Stuff that I think is a must read if you're getting into Nietzsche:

    Early: The Birth of Tragedy
              Schopenhauer as Educator

    Middle: The Gay Science

    Late: Twilight of the Idols
             Beyond Good and Evil
             Genealogy of Morals

Only after those would I suggest someone take a look at Thus Spoke Zarathustra. The book is notoriously difficult and infamous for giving people the wrong impression of Nietzsche. Out of all of those works though, Twilight is absolutely amazing, followed closely by Schopenhauer as Educator.

You've clearly sipped on the kool-aid!

I can't believe that people would defend a reading list from a Notre Dame PhD that lists primarily Notre Dame Christian philosophers as the "must read" philosophers for a foundation of metaphysics...and then say it's unbiased. It's just laughable.
But whatever, anyone who can't see that that is an incredibly biased reading list has too much "faith" to overcome. If you want to study only Notre Dame Christian philosophers, be my guest. I didn't say anything bad about them. I didn't say that they are bad, motivated by supernatural claims, unscientific, radically speculative, or insulated from the rest of the world. I'm just saying that the universe of metaphysics doesn't center around Notre Dame Christian philosophers as your list makes it seem.

You're missing a few goodies, but overall it's a solid list. Though, as a Nietzsche guy, I would never advise someone to read Thus Spoke Zarathustra without having read several of his other works thoroughly first. It's probably one of the most difficult books I've ever read (for various reasons), and this is coming from someone doing his thesis on the work.

Not necessarily. One doesn't have to be incredibly well-versed in logic, for instance, in order to understand Austen or Cavell, and they're both language philosophers.

To be honest, I was going to edit the post to point out that it was in inside joke after a mountain of people started downvoting me, but I couldn't edit it (I guess you lose the ability to edit after a period of time). To be honest, the reputation points thing doesn't matter so much, it just bothers me a little that no one bothered to ask why I was saying something so clearly offensive when I don't have (to my knowledge at least) a history of making wildly offensive claims. And right now I'm staring at the saddest picture of David Tennant I've ever seen. You're going to make me cry zizeksucks.
