You're welcome

How cruel I had one really weird Fulbright-related dream right after I submitted my application. In the dream I had to help teach male models (with the intelligence of Zoolander) how to write an essay. I remember asking how this had anything to do with Fulbright and got a stern look from the program representative for questioning IIE.

I'm imagining this combined with the Polar Vortex and other weather shenanigans we had this year >__< Yay for email!
-
I feel like I'm going nuts with the waiting. I wish they could at least tell you how many alternates there are.
-
For those interested in going to Taiwan and for the rest of the alternates, a story that might bring some hope: http://bekahgraham.wordpress.com/2012/09/30/my-fulbright-experience-uncut/

Wow...just wow. That is absolutely awful. I hope he does end up applying for a Fulbright in the future and showing her just how wrong she was.

I wasn't expecting the email for another 5 days and I was also in a rush to get something turned in for my class and not be late for my lecture. I only had five minutes to process it before I had to be in front of a room filled with people and so that was hard to keep it together/not be sad or emotional.

Reminds me of what I did for France. It really can come at any point. I was completely blindsided when I got my news : /
-
-
Not sure. I know Neurona and I both got our emails from France at 4:36, but we were different statuses (P and A).
-
It is random. Even people applying from the same country might hear back at different times.

Came across this gem while digging through last year's forum. Originally posted by zhaskin: "Had to take a class called The American Musical: A Social and Political Document. This is from "A Chorus Line." Based on the lyrics, it's highly probable they were applying for the Fulbright and not a chorus position... Anybody else relate here? (start at 50 seconds): [ALL] God, I hope I get it. I hope I get it. How many people does he need? [bOYS] How many people does he need? [GIRLS] God, I hope I get it. [ALL] I hope I get it. How many boys, how many girls? [GIRLS] How many boys, how many...? [ALL] Look at all the people! At all the people. How many people does he need? How many boys, how many girls? How many people does he...? [TRICIA] I really need this job. Please God, I need this job. I've got to get this job. [ALL] God, I really blew it! I really blew it! How could I do a thing like that? [bOYS] How could I do a thing like... [ALL] Now I'll never make it! I'll never make it! He doesn't like the way I look. He doesn't like the way I dance. He doesn't like the way I... [ALL] GOD, I think I've got it. I think I've got it. I knew he liked me all the time. Still it isn't over. [MAGGIE] What's coming next? [ALL] It isn't over. [MIKE] What happens now? [ALL] I can't imagine what he wants. [GIRLS] I can't imagine what he... [ALL] God, I hope I get it! I hope I get it. I've come this far, but even so It could be yes, it could be no, How many people does he...? I really need this job. [A FEW VOICES] My unemployment is gone. [ALL] Please, God, I need this job. [A FEW VOICES] I knew I had it from the start. [ALL] I've got to get this show. [PAUL] Who am I anyway? Am I my resume? That is a picture of a person I don't know. What does he want from me? What should I try to be? So many faces all around, and here we go. I need this job, oh God, I need this show." :

Thanks Gina I saw from last year's spreadsheet that most alts to accepted found out within 1-2 months, but didn't know if that coincided with any deadline.
-
Does anyone know if Fulbright provides a deadline to accept offered grants?
-
Thank you for the information. I am so focused on this cycle that it wasn't until my "sister-in-law" (who is currently a Fulbrighter in Morocco) suggested I can re-apply that I realized that if I want to do that I might need to start getting the ball rolling on that soon.
-
Question for those who were alternates last year and have reapplied: How much of your first application did you keep and how much did you start from scratch on (did you have your letters of rec re-written, etc.)?
-
*face palm* If this is truly the case, then wtf. I don't know how you guys feel about appointing a few of us to be in charge of adding new information in the future, but this information is super important for the applicants that will come after us to have and I don't want to see it being completely wiped out again.
-
You're also missing the names and usernames fields. i think I saved a copy of this a couple of weeks ago, let me double-check.
-
I don't think it works the same way, because I saw last year's people for France got notified around 11:00-1:00. I found out at 4:36 PM.

I found something to distract from the cycle of refreshing your email every 5 minutes. This is another gem-filled link to the 101 most insane things that have ever happened in Florida: http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/the-101-most-insane-things-that-have-ever-happened-in-florid Some of my personal favorites: “Zombie” attacks guard in nudist resort scuffle, deputies say Florida man calls 911 80 times to demand Kool-Aid, hamburgers, and weed Pink-clad pooch stolen from gay bar by man with Britney tattoo Florida accidentally banned all computers, smartphones in the state through internet cafeé ban Man sprinkled fiancée’s ashes at LensCrafters, causing Florida mall’s evacuation: Sarasota Police

Thank you GE I normally don't like feeling in limbo either, but it's better than the alternative of being non-select. My proposed study is actually related to evaluating the delivery of autism services (the art history statement was just an example).

Aww thanks kbui

Thank you guys I'm trying to stay realistically hopeful about my chances of being promoted to Accepted. The one thing I found interesting in the email I got was that it's not necessarily a straight ranking system (1st alt, 2nd alt, etc.). It sounds like if a person who was going to study art history declines they might select the alternate who also wanted to study art history as the substitute. Another piece of information I found out from my FPA is that the grant year runs from September/October 2014 and closes May/June 2015. While probably very rare, an alternate could theoretically get a call or email in the middle of December to go.

Here's what the email looked like for the curious and future Fulbright applicants: Subject: Fulbright Application Status (A) We wish to inform you that you have been designated as an Alternate for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Thus you would receive an award only in the event that someone withdraws or additional funding becomes available. While you have not currently been selected as a Principal candidate, your selection as an Alternate for a Fulbright award is, in itself, an achievement for which you can be justly proud. Please know we have no way of predicting the chances of an Alternate’s promotion to Principal, nor do we maintain ranked lists of Alternates. Promotions may depend on the profile of the Principal who declines a grant offer or other factors. The majority of Principal candidates are given one month to make their decisions regarding acceptance or declination of an award. You can assume that the Principal candidates for your country are being notified simultaneously with this notice to you. Therefore, you can estimate the time frame in which most students will accept or decline their award offers. The chance of promotion will be greatest during the spring months, and then steadily decline as time goes on. However, we maintain Alternate lists until the grant year closes and will ONLY contact you if an opening occurs. It is our hope that you would be available to accept a grant should it be offered. In the meantime, it is important that you advise us immediately if there is any factor that could preclude you from accepting an award. You will remain on the Alternate list unless you withdraw, in writing, from the competition. No additional information should be sent to us in support of your application, as it will have no effect on your status. Also, please be advised that in the event that we can offer you a Fulbright award, we will try to contact you by telephone or email first. If you need to update any of your contact information, please email your IIE Program Manager. You will receive no further correspondence on your status unless potential funding becomes available. I want to emphasize that your Alternate status in no way prejudices your chances for success in future Fulbright U.S. Student Program competitions. Each year's selection is separate. If you are not promoted to a Principal candidate and you wish to apply again for a Fulbright Award, your application will be considered solely on the basis of eligibility requirements, merits, and the placement possibilities in the country of your choice. We appreciate your interest in the Fulbright Program. Sincerely, Daniel Kramer Director, U.S. Student Programs

CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is amazing news Neurona I also heard back, but as of now I am an Alternate. I found out the news right before going to my class last night, so to say it was hard to focus and keep it together is an understatement. At least I get to sit back and wait some more with an amazing group of people
