God, this brings back memories I thought I had sufficiently suppressed.

lol got trolled by the NSF. Between this and the 2nd round of CHI notifications there has been a lot of nervous email checking today.
  3. I would like to commend you on your excellent skills. You have taken one piece of anecdotal (possible) evidence and applied it liberally to define an entire field of study. You clearly have no use for a Com PhD as it would most definitely not be of any benefit to your refined research qualities. I'm not sure which folly is larger, your possible misinterpretation of another's work, or the idea that one piece of work is enough to draw a concrete conclusion about anything let alone an entire discipline. Either way, I wish you the best. You sound like someone who would not be fun to drink with.
  4. Hey! I moved pretty quickly on a place in Regency Square (downtown, grad / professional building). I have heard very good things about the place, and the rent is not too crazy considering the space and location. I would scour craigslist for any more openings in the building. It has a walkscore of 98 (!) and campus is pretty much right across the street. To everyone else, hopefully you are excited for the Fall! We should plan some meet up type thing because I will have no friends when I get there .
  5. Ann Arbor is IMO the best area in Michigan, so there's plenty to have fun with around there (also relatively close to Detroit). If you are up for traversing distances there's everything from camping, to golfing, to boating, to bridg-ing? As it will be summer, I would recommend strongly getting to one of the many, many shores and enjoying the lakes. And yes, here in Kalamazoo Bell's is the best, and well, it's Friday at 8 so if you'll excuse me I think I'll head down there about now.
  6. Hey, I'm very heavily considering Penn State, and I am looking to live in the downtown area (extremely walkable). If anyone would be interested in a sharing a place in that area let me know !
  7. I am quite sorry to hear of your situation, but I would say that if you're interested in Academia then trying again next year would be a good choice. I know of no way to accurately predict which committees like or dislike one's application. I just know that if I applied to two programs, there would have been a very high chance of not getting an offer. Over this season I have received four offers, with the distinct possibility of a fifth (or more), but I applied to eleven programs, and at my two in-state institutions I am assuming rejection. With a journal publication and an ICA presentation I think you would be in very strong shape to get very good admits in any cycle, and perhaps if there are weaker parts of your application you can use some of the time to improve them. Best of luck in whatever path you choose !
  8. - Dude, what the fuck ? - No - No, you do right now, at least
  9. I always knew it was a fake person, and finally the truth reveals itself.
  10. Oh, and if you need a break from the anxiety(s): http://kotaku.com/the-perfect-beauty-of-cat-island-1530397781
  11. As someone currently spending 23 hours of his day pondering different options, I can say that you likely have to decide what aspects are most important to you and go from there. My brilliant advisor came up with the idea of drawing up your ideal program and seeing how each option compares on what matters to you. It's difficult to weigh in on anyone's situation. I would certainly consider standard important issues like faculty fit, research productivity / opportunities, job placement, cohort, funding, workload (both in own studies and responsibilities) and also things like where you want to spend the next 4-5 years of your life, quality of life via workload / funds, family, distance concerns, etc. But yeah, I have no answers. But probably, there aren't really any wrong answers, and we're lucky to have choices (it feels a lot better than two months ago, though definitely carries its new anxieties). Good luck to everyone making fun choices, I hope you all still have hair in a month .
  12. I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that if we did not get an invite to the NW visit, we are just biding time until the rejection comes.
  13. Got my fourth admit offer of the season today. Also offered a very nice fellowship! So yeah, even that can be done, sub 3.0 / F's and W'ers .
