  2. For the Issue Task: Pick a side: do you agree or disagree? Demonstrate your side on the first paragraph. Consider the other side of your argument. Use examples and cite alternatives. Make claims and provide evidence. For the Argument Task: Determine the validity or inadequacy of the reasoning, and analyze it for flaws and how to make it better or stronger with improvements or changes. Decide how convincing the provided argument is by evaluating the evidence provided. Each prompt will have 3 or 4 flaws. For both: Consider the hierarchy of evidence and use supporting evidence from most valid to least valid: Documented facts and statistics Expert testimony Personal experience and anecdotes Hypothetical illustrations Analogies of any kind And last, practice! Look at other prompts and write them out as if it were the real thing. Good luck!
  3. I would recommend changing the word "mock" test for "practice" test. Also, it might be good to take the GRE at the end of September or by mid October in case someone decides they want/need to retake it. Also, around August you should start contacting the professors, before the application process begins, not after! It's good to have them on your side when the application comes around, plus, some universities require faculty sponsorship. It's also good to contact possible advisors in advance in order to know if they'll be taking students. Contacting other grad students in advance is also helpful since they can give you inside information about the school, the environment, the professors, and might even give you application tips.
  4. I know a few people who have gotten a double master's in medical anthropology and public health. You should look into the work of medical anthropologists and get a sense of the approaches, theories, and topics they study. That can really help you when writing a personal statement and choosing the best school for you. I also recommend looking into the work of Paul Farmer, a doctor who is also an anthropologist who established the organization Partners in Health in Haiti. He has dealt with many international organizations like WHO when addressing health disparities and such. There's a good book written about him by a journalist, it's called Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World by Tracy Kidder. It's an easy read, and it can give you some insights.

  6. Well, if you're making flashcards you can look up example sentences using that word. You can also get a pdf file from the gre website about GRE words in context. Also, if you have an android, there's an app called painless GRE that gives you sentence examples.
  7. No, you don't. You can log in using facebook, I think, or you can also log in as a guest.
  8. Tinychat is really easy to use. We'll be using my tinychat room tinychat.com/mypetitmal. It works like skype, you can "start broadcasting" to talk or turn on your cam.
  9. From what I've read, most schools recommend you take it at least 3 weeks before to ensure the test gets there on time. Therefore, you have plenty of time. I highly doubt that it would harm your application if it's not received 6 weeks in advance. They'll look at your whole application package regardless.
  10. I've been using that app! Very useful.
  11. Well, the poll is on Pacific Time, so those not in that area need to add the hours in their head, not on the poll. It seems like you don't have to worry about that though because you're in California.
  12. Just general... I'm not studying anything related to bio, sorry I can't help.
  13. OK, yes, great! So maybe we can meet for an hour or so? More if needed?
  14. Are we meeting only to decide a study time or are we also going to study?
  15. My decision really was based on my career goals. I want to work in academia and do research. For that I need a PhD. I couldn't do that with a master's, but it sounds like you do have options. It's already accomplishment to get a master's degree, and not all career require you to have a PhD. Dedicating so much of your life to something you might not need and something that isn't fulfilling is not worth it unless it's something you really want/need. Take a look at your goals right now and in the future, your well-being, and for a moment, ignore pressures (I know they can be very significant, but just for one moment). Then see how those goals match up with continuing a PhD. Good luck!
  16. I'm in the East Coast... We need to figure out people's time zones, I think. Maybe somewhere in between 3 to 6?

    What to do...?

Well, like you mentioned, going back to school takes time, money, and dedication. If you're not committed to the idea of graduate school then I would avoid the whole deal. Maybe you can learn different skills without the need of graduate school such as taking language classes, getting some sort of certificate on something you're interested in. I know things are tough right now in the job market, but learning new skills can definitely set you apart and give you more opportunities. Good luck!
  18. Maybe we can have a tinychat (kinda like skype where several people can meet) during this weekend and study/organize how we're gonna do this.

  20. Okay, yeah, sign me up! I'm pretty solid with the verbal and aw, but I still have a lot of review I need to do with math, maybe some vocab. I don't have any books, but I am taking a GRE workshop at my university, and I've gotten a lot of strategies and practice.
  21. Make sure you put your name and the program you're applying to at the top! No need for letter heads or fancy stuff.
  22. How would this online study group? I'm also planning to take the GRE around the same time.
  23. Yes! Absolutely. If you have the time and resources needed to further your education, I recommend that you pursue that. It sounds like it's something you want to do, and it can definitely open new opportunities for you, and it can also give you new perspectives. Learning is great no matter what age! I also dropped out of high school and got a GED, now I'm finishing my undergrad and I'm looking into graduate school. Don't let that stop you! Good luck!

All the best for test day... And btw, if you're appearing for the first time, then make sure u are mentally prepared to sit in front of a computer screen for 4 and a half hours!! It can mess with your brain as u go past the 3 hour mark. :)

I'm nervous about restroom breaks and water. I guess I'll have to be thirsty and wait for the 10 minute break.
