Sure, that's great, but not everyone can rely of "maybe's", you know? "Maybe I'll get funding a month in" is that, a maybe.
-
anthropologygeek, I don't think anyone is saying that you shouldn't seek outside funding. I think most of us can agree that we should all do that and apply to different fellowships and grants. The thing is that some of us want financial stability and feel that that stability would allow us to perform better and focus more, and that would make a good fit program into a great fit program.

Yeah Canis. I met a CUNY PhD student at the AAAs, and she was telling me about the situation and how she has a lot of debt because she can't really afford to live on what they pay their students. She also mentioned they were going to admit so few students because of the funding package. I guess knowing that might make the decision for some easier.

Yeah, I wouldn't accept a fellowship without a stipend, especially in New York. And you know, you're worth a full fellowship and a great program. I hope you hear some great news soon!
-
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! But who knows? You might have gotten waitlisted and someone might give up their spot. You never know. And would you be willing to pay your own living expenses in NY? :/
-
Thanks! And unfortunately, I'm pretty sure it was for all the subfields although they didn't say that specifically. I really doubt that they'd accept 13 ling people since it's usually a smaller subfield and because I've talked to a PhD student there, and she said they usually just accept 1-3 ling anthro people. I might be wrong though.

Aww DigDeep, you will be missed! But I'm happy that you are going to use your time well to focus on your studies. That said, best of luck with grad school and everything else. Thank you for all your input and support, and like pears said, we shall see each other at the AAAs. Many hugs and blessings.

Finally heard back from CUNY, waitlisted! It's OK though. I know some of you are waiting to hear back, so here's some relevant info: They have made 13 offers and must now wait for people to tell them whether they are going. I was asked that if I'm still interested whether it would be possible for me to attend CUNY with a tuition-only fellowship. They also said they wanted to emphasize that this year’s applicant pool was the most competitive they have ever had. "Although I wish I could offer you a place right now, your application was excellent and we would be delighted to have you here if a place opens up." So I guess all acceptances have gone out, maybe some waitlists will come soon. Good luck everyone!

That is awesome! Congrats!

Sorry about the rejections, but now that all of your results are in, we should celebrate for the acceptances! Congrats

One thing I've learned in this whole process is that in grad school you can never be sure of anything. People with great applications (M.A., publications, conferences, excellent letters of recommendation, etc) have gotten rejections, so I don't think it's prudent to rely on our self-confidence when deciding to choose a school with lesser funding because ultimately we might me wonderful and we might still not get funding. When I found out about my acceptances, I sent emails with many questions that I think can help me decide. I had two specific funding-related questions that I think are useful to determine my best option funding-wise. 1. How many opportunities for funding are there after the official package runs out? 2. Do students get outside funding often? Funding is just one of the many factors that need to be taken into account when choosing a specific program, and everyone's priorities are different. I think we should be respectful of that.

Awww <3 Maybe I'll end up there! I don't know yet! But yes, it'd be good to have a friend wherever I end up.
-
Rejection sucks, sorry! Hopefully wherever you end up going ends up being the best fit!

Well, yes, of course I expect it to get colder! It got colder than the AAA weekend in Atlanta, so of course it'll be colder there. Anyway, we can always adapt to new circumstances and new places, right?
-
Yeah, same. I actually saw someone did get accepted for ling anthro, so I just wanna know more!
-
Are any of those CUNY acceptances for Linguistic Anthropology?
-
I'm not even embarrased. The cold is a scary thing (and an investment!)
-
I'm originally from Colombia, and I live in Atlanta, so I'm kinda scared of the cold! Michigan is definitely an amazing program and a great fit, so we'll see. San Diego's weather sounds perfect though! I'm not going to make decisions based solely on the weather, but I want to make sure I can live for a long time wherever I end up going to, you know? Hopefully visiting weekends will help me decide. Did you decide that you'll be attending Chicago? I went to there for the last AAAs, and I was so cold!

I'm feeling the same way about CUNY! Their application was due December 1st. Oh well, someone said we should hear from them tomorrow. It's the last university I'm waiting to hear back from, and I just want this part of the process to be over. Patience, patience...

I got in with a B.A and without publications, but my Honors Thesis is pending publication in the university journal. I know that doesn't really matter anyway, so I didn't mention it.
-
Sorry about that. Hope you hear good news soon!
-
The results page is red today. It's making me sad! Sorry everyone! Anyway, congratulations to those who got the three acceptances so far today!
-
Sorry about NYU everyone! *hugs*
-
Sorry to hear that *hugs*. Hope you get to hear good news from UConn tomorrow!

I'm sorry about that. Are you waiting on other programs? Congratulations! Such a nice post dreams coming true! Aww you're so sweet! Thank you so much!
