  1. I'm curious as to why you'd need a green card? Couldn't you get a student visa and once the master ends just apply for an extension to be able to continue on to your PhD? I really don't know how you'd be able to get a green card unless: 1. you have family here who can sponsor you (and that process takes a very long time) 2. if you have a job that would sponsor you or 3. if you came here as an asylee or refugee. I have experience with 1 and 3, so if you have questions about it, pm me. Anyway, I would recommend asking the university how many of their MA students apply to their PhD and how successful they are at getting in. If you already have a tourist visa and can afford to visit, then that'd probably be a good idea to decide. I saw thread in the psych forum, and it might be useful for you. Many many hugs and blessings to you <3 <3
  2. I had a list in my head last night, but then one of my cats came and cuddled me and made me fall asleep. If you want more, let me know. I don't want to overwhelm you with books or articles, but I think this book is realy great (a bit expensive though): A Companion to Linguistic Anthropology. Ed. by Alessandro Duranti.
  3. I don't really drink (too many medications), so it'll have to be chatting and drinking coffee instead.
  4. Wow DigDeep! That sounds really cool. It's so amazing how we can all be in the same discipline and study very different things. We can learn so much from each other.
  5. Well, keep in mind what I told you about UCSD. Don't lose hope! What are you interested in doing in grad school? Edit: Your project sounds really cool! I'd definitely like to hear more about it when you are closer to finishing.
  6. Thanks! Everyone else should share what they're intered in. It'd be cool to learn specially since we have people from all the subfields
  7. I've never posted it, only on pm, so it's cool! Thanks for asking. My honors thesis focused on the links of forced migration, bilingualism, and language ideologies among Colombian asylees in Atlanta (native ethnography!). I'm interested in continuing to link forced displacement to language, but I'd like to focus more on language endangerment of languages of the Chibcha family. There's obviously a lot more to it, but that's the basis, really.
  8. So I was looking at the AAA website, and they recommend grad cafe as a resource for students. It made me laugh. [x]
  9. I started by asking my thesis adviser to recommend me some grad schools (ended applying to 3 that he recommended). After that I looked at gradschools.com and graduate-school.phds.org I recommend simply looking up people who have done significant contributions to your field and see where they work.
  10. I recommend wearing business casual or smart casual since it's the weekend (depends on the activity, I suppose). And you can still have your personal style: a cool scarf, a colorful necklace, flats (or whatever shoes you like to wear) that stand out... If you've ever been to the AAA's, you'll see that anthropologist aren't too strict about dress code.
  11. Not all universities are closed for the holiday. For example, the university I work at will be open on Monday, so maybe check the calendar of the universities you're waiting to hear from and see if they'll be open; that way you won't have to suffer as much. Also, I did get an interview on a Sunday and was also notified by my POI at 11pm their time (during the week), so some people will continue to work at weird times.
  12. That's wonderful! I'm so happy for you two!
  13. You are accepted and then you get invited for the prospective student weekend. That's what my acceptance letter said. Good luck!
  14. Let's hope adcoms didn't take the day of for V Day.

  15. I'm sorry to hear about that colorless. *Hugs*
  16. Silence doesn't mean rejection! I know it's hard to wait, but don't jump unless it's from happiness when you get some good news which I hope you get soon
  17. Thank you! You're so sweet. An congratulations to you too!
  18. Welcome and good luck! Hope you hear some good news soon
  19. Have you heard of the term "smart casual"? It's pretty much looking put together and still being able to wear jeans (not baggy). I'd recommend maybe some flats or boots and avoid tennis shoes. If you have an important meeting or if you're teaching then business casual would probably be a better option. Just make sure to look clean and look like you care and appreciate the place where you are at. I'm sure you'll also be able to get an idea of how to dress when you see the professors and the other grad students.
  20. Self love
  21. Hey, those who got CUNY interviews, do you live in the area or did the department offer you to fly there? PM me if you don't feel comfortable posting.
  22. Well, Atlanta has been in shut-down mode since Tuesday, so probably nothing new will happen at Emory at least since next week.
  23. This morning I prayed, so that everyone can hear some good news soon! If you're not religious then just consider me sending everyone good vibes. You're all such a rgeat group of people, hopefully colleagues in the near future.
  24. Yeah, you're right. Good luck!
  25. Unfortunately that hasn't worked for me because then it's like "I need to know where I get accepted, so I can hear about funding, and so I can weigh the pros and cons of each university." Just hope God enlightens me because this is all just so overwhelming!
