  1. Getting stuff in writing is key. I really dislike contract templates, but they are a step in the right direction. Just google around. Also, your state might have some kind of "lawyers for the arts" organization that can help point you in the right direction, or help you find pro bono/reduced fee representation for situations where you really need a lawyer. As for enforcement, I'm guessing your fees would probably be under the small claims limit in your state (but check that). Make a formal demand for payment (i.e., send a letter/email stating the facts of your agreement, the work to be performed, the sum to be paid, the relevant dates, etc. -- and the fact that the work was completed and payment not rendered). When that is ignored or refused, file suit in small claims court. If the amount in question exceeds the small claims limit, lawyer up.
  2. woohoo! congratulations!!
  3. TOTALLLLLLLY YES. Think I'm gonna go on vacation next week. Some fresh powder would do me good.
  4. IUPUI (located in Indianapolis) is accepting applications till 2/15.
  5. Keep in mind that I'm making this up as I go along, but. Wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing. Basically, I'd wear whatever makes you not pay attention to your clothes (which extends to body jewelry, exposing tattoos, and the like), because otherwise you'll fidget with them or be distracted about how you look. I personally may wear a suit to my in-person interview, but that's because it ties in with the concept of my work and past life experience. Otherwise, it might look silly. If your work reflects your life experience, go for it. I personally feel a bit more "on" when I wear a blazer. You gotta do what works for you. (:
  6. I've been asked by a couple of schools what kinds of classes I'd be willing/comfortable/etc. teaching. Tripped me up the first time -- so, especially for those of you who don't have BFAs (like me!), give it some thought.
  7. Congrats dude! You're killing it! If and when you get your work online, post it here -- I'm sure a lot of people besides me would love to take a look.
  8. dude! another datamosher! your stuff is awesome. just got into datamoshing and glitch art a little while ago. it's super fun. good luck!
  9. LOL @ rejection email not even bothering to update the year from last year's. Also, eh, I'm not worried about you, with your portfolio. (:
  10. Congratulations! Public transportation is the easiest way to get through NY, assuming you're not hauling around a ton of paintings with you. Take the AirTrain to the subway to Grand Central Station, where you can take a Metro North commuter rail line all the way to New Haven. If you want more details, send me a PM. (:
  11. BICEO is right. It's pretty well documented that Yale gets about 1000 per year. Here's an excerpt from the CAA guide. The year before was something similar. (On an unrelated note, holy shit, I just realized they make six figures off of application fees alone. Heh.)
  12. Awesome! Congratulations!
  13. Woohoo! Congratulations!! (I mean, not on sounding stupid. Obvs. But I'm sure it's fiiiine.)

  20. Yeah srsly. I'm with you. I thought Yale typically held interviews over several days midweek, though, not on weekends. Still, holding off on buying plane tickets to Chicago for the time being, just in case I need to head directly east from there.
  21. yeah, an email a little under an hour ago.
  22. @dryheat, @aniram415, congrats to you guys too!
  23. Interview @ Michigan!!!
  24. Congratulations! Well, last year with NU, looks like they let people know in the first week of February. Their application deadline was fairly recent, too (the 12th, right?), so give 'em some time. It sounds like a lot of us here applied there; they might have a larger-than-normal crop of applications to sift through. I'm personally wondering what the heck is taking Stanford so long -- their deadline was 12/8.
