What should be included in "social service experience"?
esimanon replied to drose95's topic in Social Workers Forum
Definitely include your volunteer experience because its a piece of who you are - and, in my opinion volunteering speaks to your passion for social justice and social change - although I wouldn't list it in the same manner as your 'official' work experience. I would make a volunteer section and list the orgs with the hours volunteered. So, a quick reference list rather than a thorough listing. Side note: A lot of people say to be brief with the resume but my was 3 pages because I was able to fill them and that's a good thing! I say take credit where credit is due Also discussing these experiences - especially the benefit of them as a addition to a long term employment position - in your essays will tie them in nicely so there won't be any question as to why they are on your resume. good luck- 3 replies

Hello All - I'm a second year at a UC Master of Social Welfare program. Let me know if you have any questions about the application process. Also, feel free to check out the google docs I created below that give a summary of the skills/experience of applicants

Hello All- I'm in need of some suggestions on what to do about a strained field instructor relationship. Some background: I'm a Children and Families concentration for Masters of Social Welfare. Specifically, I am a Title IV-E student, meaning I will become a child welfare social worker upon graduation. I'm in my second year field placement at a county office that serves children and family (including CPS). I'm currently working alongside and shadowing a child welfare social worker. Our relationship is a tad strained and I don't know what to do to improve it. My field instructor (FI) has been stressed lately as she's under investigation for misusing county property (examples of this include cell phone, car etc.) Today she was really stressed because she had a court report due by the end of the day. Before she could work on her court report, we had to go to another trial. While we were waiting for court, she asked me to watch her purse while she went to the bathroom. I scooted over on the bench we were sitting on to be next to her purse and she went to the restroom. She came back and resumed her conversation that we were having with 4 or so attorneys. The only other people in our circle were county reps (coworkers) and attorneys. About an hour later she looked for her phone in her purse and couldn't find it. We realized it had been stolen. I feel super bad that her phone was taken, but she spent the entire rest of the day telling anyone that would listen that, "my phone was stolen while I went to the bathroom'. Logic and reason would say that it's highly unlikely that the phone was stolen during the few minutes where someone was assigned to watching over it. There were many other opportunities for the phone to be taken that morning - like when she went through security and took the phone out of her bag....She says she remembers the phone being in a particular pocket right before she went to the restroom but I simply do not see how it's possible that someone wedged their way into a group of attorneys to reach into a bag that was being monitored without anyone noticing! My FI was super upset for the remainder of the day. After court she said she would meet me back at the office - we usually walk together. When I checked in with her later that afternoon at the office she said, "I'm going to give you a very difficult talk" , which she did. What do you think I should do? Looking for positive suggestions.

Berkeley is not a clinical track by any means. It's primarily social justice oriented.

Current MSW at Berkeley student here - what are your questions?
-
Typically the practice models aren't individually talked about as being emphasized at schools since they provide students with an overview of the most prominent models used in the field. If there's a particular one that you're interested in, look to see if there are any professors that specialize or do research on that model. Also, looking at peer reviewed articles on your favorite models with have the authors whom are usually professors Hope that answers your question

I just got an email from Catharine and she said they reviewed the last of the applications today and she's 'doing her best to schedule the last few' I presume it will be by the end of the day. Best of luck!

Looks like some people have been contacted for interviews.....I'm still in the waiting game -
Anyone else hear anything from title IVE? Im still waiting....also, what was in the email they sent regarding interviews?
-
For which concentration? All of them? I am wondering why they are later this year at sending acceptances....last year I heard on 3/3/14. I can't take this waiting game any longer!!! Also, I applied to the Title IV-E program... they interview everyone they are considering so maybe that means we will find out sooner/ish? I sure hope so. I can't wait much longer. Now I'm getting too mental about the whole thing.

For Title IV-E students, I just emailed Catharine Ralph (Title IV-E coordinator)- she said she was gone on bereavement leave and has just returned. Now she's able to resume reviewing applicants with the decision board. She stated that Title IV-E students will hear about interview invitations within the next couple weeks.

Does anyone know when we they will start contact candidates for interviews? Has anyone been contacted yet? If so, when? I'm dying from waiting because it looks like people were contacted around Feb. 20th in previous years. Merp... -

I don't believe the Mental Health Stipend is still available, I think 2014 is the last year it's provided. -
