  1. I wonder if this chick ever got in. Chicago is sending out acceptances
  2. Fuck that stupid subject exam. That thing was such a pain in the ass. Literally, every professor Ive spoken too--even professors at institutions that require the exam--have talked down about it and refered to it as outdated. I cant speak for Texas because I did not apply, but I got accepeted into a program where the average subject exam score is in the 70th percentile. My score? 18th percentile. Then again, the stuff I'd like to do is not covered in the least bit on the subject exam. Im sure if you were a Medievalist and you got the 18th percentile then that might work against you lol. Keep ya chin up! Test scores dont define us. Ive never believed in tests and never will.
  3. Yall need to stop this cyber bulling right now!! Jk!! Im a first time applicant and first generation college student and a lot of the stuff i peruse and read on here has really helped a hell of a lot. So kudos to all da "vets" lol. Sometimes the truth hurts and it bothers ppl i guess. Touche bunny! Great post and analogy!
  4. My professor has done this. Graduated from ucla. Attended Minnesota for one year. Hated it. Called up the dept at UCLA and begged to come back. They let him in. Hence, he did his undergrad and graduate work all at UCLA.
  5. Well San Diego told me to screw off at 11 pm at night Didn't really want to go there anyhow. Truthfully only applied cause it is close to home, and that probably showed. Oh well!
  6. You shouldn't feel that way at all. With no disrespect to the writer of that post, all that stuff can at times work antithetically and come off as a negative. Grad schools want students to be "their product," as I've been told so many times before. If a candidate comes in with all that, then the slate isn't really as clean as departments would like it to be. Furthermore, I've also been told by a number of individuals on ad comms that impressive resumes and stats will only mean the candidate is judged harsher and ad comms will be less forgiving. So you have a shot at many, many schools. Hell, Harvard, I believe, doesn't accept anyone with a Masters, so that is food for thought.
  7. I second this. My letter writers told me that unless this is true, publishing doesnt mean jack shit. I'm told undergraduates arent expected to have published anything, and committees are looking for "potential" more than anything. I've also been warned that undergrads who have published can even come off as antithetical to admissions. And to ease the stress of those who didnt publish, I havent published anything at all either...and I still got in. So keep your head up!
  8. Working at a grocery store. Seriously. I enjoy it. #futuregrocersofamerica
  9. This is freaking disgusting!
  10. Freaking USC rejected me. Even though Illinois took me, in my heart I didn't want to leave California and was pulling for this one.Sucks to put in so much work and be told you are not good enough for us. I'm going to save this rejection letter, frame it, and use it for motivation during those moments of dejection and abortive feelings.
  11. Shhheeesh. I applied to 10 feeling confident as hell. After i applied, my thoughts: "what the hell did I just waste my money on! Good luck!" Thought for sure straight zeroes across the board. Then Urbana came calling and i was like "Holy Shit! No way!" Then after pausing to reflect for a moment, I chuckled slightly to myself, thinking, "What in the world were they thinking to let ME in!" The grad director and another professor in the dept both told me they were impressed with my application, and Im just thinking, "Whaaaaaa? Was there some mix-up in the file!" Ive yet to here from anywhere else where I have applied, but I still feel as if my chances are abysmal. But honestly, it is ok! I had my heart set on Urbana from the start and I'm happy. I'm pretty sure OSU doesnt want me because ppl have been saying theyve been accepted, but I havent lol! Just goes to show how variegated admissions decisions are. Good enough for Urbana, not for OSU.
  12. I can only attest to the English section at Urbana Champaign. But I got accepted and was notified the 24th. Recruitment event is March 11th-13th!
  13. HA! Shh! Dont take the fun out of it yet!!
  14. The M.A. but not the terminal one. The one where you can matriculate non-competitively to the PhD lol! It's early as heck for admissions decisions. I was surprised when I opened up that email, and I haven't even heard from any of the other schools I've applied to either, so maybe Illinois is quick on the jump! I'm crossing my fingers you get an acceptance soon too!!!!
  15. Into Urbana-Champaign!! What other Illini are out there!! I want to meet you!!!
  16. Every single professor Ive spoken too has said not to worry about those word limits. Hell I even sent my SOP to a professor at one of the schools Im applying to, which asks for 300-500 words (mine was like 670), and dude said it was amazing and asked me to submit it with only a few minor changes. I've always looked at it like this. If you have a 600 word SOP and they only want 500, by the time they get to the fifth hundred word in your statement, if they are really interested in you and want you, they will read 100 more words. If they stop reading at 500, well then your statement sucks, and they werent going to admit you anyway even if you did make their limit. If your not compelling enough to make someone read three more sentences, then how compelling and successful would your research really be anyway? Plus, I wouldnt want to go to a school that rejected me off such a miniscule reason anyway.
