  1. I would say that the # of hrs you spend fulfilling your TA duties depends entirely on where you'll be attending, who you're TA-ing for, and your interest in an academic career that involves teaching. Some programs rely heavily on TAs, assigning three lab sections/semester or equivalent. Last fall I co-taught 10 hours of class/week to 25 students, plus office hours, plus time to edit and develop new course materials. When you factor in grading and answering emails, 20 hours was a low estimate for a typical week. If you have any interest in teaching down the road, I would say this isn't really a bad thing. It's taxing on your time, but it can be a really good way to learn about pedagogy in the sciences, depending on the professor. Also, you have the opportunity to spark or kill students' interest in geology, so keep that in mind as you lecture/provide feedback!
  2. Can't believe I'm going back for more... Undergrad Institution: Tiny midwest lib artsMajor(s):GeologyMinor(s):N/AGPA in Major: 3.7ishOverall GPA: 3.63Position in Class: in the middle- there weren't too many of usType of Student: domestic, F Grad Institution: State school, small dept.Major(s):Geology Minor(s):GPA in Major: 4.00Overall GPA: 4.00Position in Class: meh GRE Scores (revised/old version):Q:158V:159W:5.0Research Experience: competitive REU as an undergrad, USGS internship following graduation, internship at research university, current field-based research for my M.Sc.Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Undergrad: TA award, geo scholarship, Award for thesis. 3. Swans- The seer returns (the whole album on repeat, really) Future Islands- A song for our grandfathers The Black Angels- Indigo meadow The soundtrack of map making!
  4. I passed my proposal this semester, so here goes: A thesis in structural geology. The goal of my project is to reconstruct the deformational history of a small region in SW New Zealand related to the growth of the Gondwana paleocontinent (~350 - 120 Ma). Kinematic analysis of superposed brittle and ductile features will tell me how the tectonic setting may have changed through time, with early ductile (think: high temps, flowing) structures showing transpressive deformation, and later brittle (think: low-moderate temps, fracturing) showing arc-parallel deformation. Piecing together this story will tell me what was going on immediately before the breakup of Gondwana. Incorporating absolute age dating of key rock samples will allow us to compare events to others in this part of New Zealand.
  5. First semester is done! Jazzed about my final grades and moving into logistics mode. Leaving Dec 31 for three wks of field work mapping mid- and lower-crustal rocks in NZ. Data for the thesis!
  6. food/drink: buying starbucks instead of brewing my own coffee, any and all ice cream, all cheap beers media: hate-watching FNC and MSNBC, hate-reading misogynistic online forums (I don't know why, it gets me so worked up and angry)
  7. Every time something fails on my car, I become increasingly interested in auto repair and maintenance. Say what you will, but this is definitely an intellectual pursuit.
  8. Well, if youtube links are going to start showing up, this one definitely has potential for research music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJelEXaPhJ8 This song... er... remix complements my text message alert nicely.
  9. Yes on the recurring dream! I dream that I've moved across the country for grad school, but I somehow forgot to quit my job. Now I have to balance being a full time student in New England and a logging geologist working 60+ hrs/wk in Colorado. Overall though, I'm excited. Nervous about TA-ing structure, since it was the most difficult (and interesting) geo course for me as an undergrad.
  10. 1. Panelist on Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me 2. 1st mate on a sailing vessel 3. Tower climbing electrician 4. Exploration Geologist #4 is the only one I'm becoming qualified to do, I might be able to swing #3 though.
  11. I have a hard time listening to anything while reading articles, but if I'm writing, doing lab work, or just toiling away in excel, I really enjoy listening to silly music like Shaggy or Jimmy Buffet.
  12. We were called individually across the outdoor stage. BAs first- name, major, latin honors, departmental honors. Then the same for BS. Hoods were awarded to top GPA for BA and BS. The majority of seniors decorated their mortarboards. People devoted a significant amount of time to this during senior week when all underclassmen were gone. Ornaments varied from a loaf of homemade bread to a paper rmache bust of a dinosaur.
  13. I grew up in Maine and have hit all states save for Delaware, N Carolina, S Carolina, Florida (layover doesn't count), and Hawaii. My summers were spent fighting with my older brother in the back of my parent's Volvo station wagon all across these great United States. Maine to Alaska (north of Fairbanks)... in a station wagon. Got to most national parks and probably chose geology because of it. Outside of US, I've been to most of Canada except maritime provinces, Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, Grenada, and the EEZ of Bermuda, Venezuela, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Martinique, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, and St Kitts and Nevis. EEZ doesn't really count, but it took ages to sail through, and we picked up lots of cool debris from the islands. I'll be taking my first trip to the southern hemisphere for my MS thesis in January!
  14. Got the same email! Just have to wait to hear about funding at this point...
